- Presented here is part 1 of the full story of BONELAB as far as we understand it today. I only wanted to release one video, but it was going to be over 40 minutes long, so I decided to break it up into parts to make it easier to digest.

Dude, when you brought up that sign that talks about streaming assets from the void by packing them in crates, that just blew my mind.
The mod SDK has you pack everything in crates, and I just assumed they called it that for simplicity, but the fact it actually ties into the game is just so cool!
Even when modding, you're still playing the game in a sense
I also noticed that and now I'm wondering if there are going to be hidden elements within the SDK that are story related. That would be an awesome way to add to the story seeing as how the player character creating mods is implied to be canon.
It's very tied together.
The rules on the monolith is about bad VR titles. "No mods", well, we breaking that.

The fact that they got Greased Scottsman to make the tutorials for the mod SDK was a mind blowing thing to me, basically shouting at us that modding the game is a huge part of the lore of the game.
Fun fact:
You can keep the dagger that the Radio Man summons by pocketing it before you land, but it goes back to being a normal dagger instead of the "funny purple swoosh" one.

After I saw the boneworks lore video and played the entirety of bonelab I was just waiting for this vid to come. You do a really good job at explaining this type of stuff.
It’s been confirmed for Jimmy( Radio show host ) to be the protagonist for the next stress level zero game called DeadFM but basically Bonelab was just to introduce Jimmy’s character and his motives and something for people to chew on until DeadFM comes out
It's insane that a game that felt this big and was this amazing to play was just meant to introduce the character of the next game and be like a sneak peak.... this game was such a surreal experience!

Next game is the B-Side. They already have the copyright for it, and it’s confirmed to be the next by either Brandon or Alex I can’t remember.
I'm in the same boat as I was after Alyx...waiting for people to make amazing workshop stuff. Waiting for SLZ to release the full mod tools and for people to make more Bonelab to play. It's weird how boneworks didn''t really hit me as hard back in 2020 on my Rift S but Bonelab on the Quest 2 blew me away.

Bonelab has some of the weirdest lore but this video explains ALL OF IT!
ngl you have to give them credit for making one of the most meta and unique ways to tell a story lol and it's actually executed pretty well too. People complain about the story not being obvious but heck when I played portal back in the day I had no clue what was going on, who was the rat man? who knows, but only after looking into it more did the lore really shine and the same goes for the games from stress level zero.
I honestly love the portal vibes they have going here and I really hope they simply release story content to bonelabs and they don't make another sequel, they should perfect bonelabs and allow it to grow with mods and their own added content/updates/features.

This game goes so deep, for example if you explore the sandbox level museum basement you can find hidden network of rooms and hallways. You get a whole subplot just from that single sandbox level.

My interpretation was that we play as an AI that found the room in fantasy land with the magic die that Jimmy talks about finding himself towards the later half of the game while talking about his exploits in fantasy land, and this is what led to our hanging. I just liked the idea of being an AI, plus it sort of adds up with the little bit of black text on the walls at the beginning of the game. If the black text on the walls works like it did in Boneworks and is inserted internal monologue then the black text in bonelab being scared and confused saying “where is everyone? :(“ (in level one after jumping down from the first MythOS office room) aligns more with an AI that gets shoved out of their world and into a new one and less a player getting put into the villager and into a game. Can’t argue with the lead designer but I like this idea a lot.
I'm glad someone's picked up the mantle for these videos. There's loads of thought-provoking stuff pointed out in this that I missed while playing.
There is something you missed in the room after the airlock in the lab.
If you look on the tables you will see folders wit "project 4 " written on them.
Its in the same room where the radio guy says that the fantasyland devs deleted all their data.
Weird I never noticed that, the load room is also room L4 so maybe that has some significance?

Project 4 was bonelabs codename before we knew the games actual title if you go back in the discord you can see the devs talking about project 4. Also dead fm is its own game, it's soundtrack has already been finished. After dead fm we will either get hall of the machine king or something else. When Jimmy is talking to you in the car he mentions something hostile. I predict that this will be the wormbridge which symbol can be seen across bonelab. For context the wormbridge is something from fall of the machine king. The devs talked about it in a long deleted interview from before boneworks released.

Whenever I play bonelab or bonworks, when I'm not focused on what's happening and zone out I always get an eerie feeling that there was something deeper than what I was seeing on the surface. Also this is the only vr game that I always feel like something is watching or following me all the time.

On the contrary to popular opinion, I love bonelab as a game and think that it rivals boneworks in so many ways. The only thing that people say that is going to take the quality of bonelab down is the short story, which I don’t believe. Sure boneworks has a lot more of options for routes to take to end or levels, b it bonelab was designed specifically for bonelab. Not to be too explored and has more linear level design which I love. The combat compared to boneworks is top notch, I compared the melee 2 handed weapons to each other, and sadly bonelab only slightly improved it, but it’s fine. I feel like while SLZ made the game as a tool for modders, I feel like one day they will work with modders and make practically a continuation of the game with a mod team. Think about it, the level design in bonelab is also top notch, and feels right at every point. With the major update they made recently it shows they are listening to the community (unlike other game developer companies) on their opinions on stuff like moon base and pillar climb, and they have done an amazing job. I feel like the modders, aka us, are apart of the story of boneworks and bonelab, as Jimmy wants US to expand and create, just like how he says “there you go” when you open the mods thing! I feel like story wise, you of course get put into the body of a villager that put you into him, which I feel like isn’t the case. I feel like it was the boneworks engine throwing your consciousness into a random body that happens to be being hung. This would mean that you are an AI that gained sentience. Something that proves my point is how they send null bodies dressed like villagers to fantasy land to work for the villagers, or eventually become one. I feel like you have been put into an AI and bonelab finally added the real world into the lore

On a meta side of things, the billboard telling us about the crate shipping system in order to load assets without void leaks is also a reference to how mods work in real life. For the bone lab game you package to files in files and folders called crates and pallets. These are then held to a Master folder refer to as a container, and finally then zipped to be loaded into somebody's mod folder.

I finished it all in a week, I think it’s one of the most beautiful video game stories
At a surface level, the story of BoneLab is extremely simple. When you actually look into it, it's very interesting!
At this point it feels intentional how confusing they tell their stories and i bet its leading up to a big game that connects all the dots perfectly

I think the "Pay no heed below the belt" precept could also be a tongue-in-cheek reference to Meta's Horizons since in that "metaverse" you don't have any lower body. Their devs said they couldn't do legs because doing legs was difficult to do in VR when there's VR Games like VRChat, Boneworks, etc that DO give you legs.

i just realised that in the car at the end of the video jimmy talks about the place we're in, but just now i realised he's talking to US, TWICE, once on the radio, once in the taxi.
Bonelab story was definitely simple to understand, idk if thats because I knew the Boneworks lore though. I do like how you play as your consciousness.

I get that some people love to dive into game lore and really find out the story’s plot (games like dark souls and resident evil) but I just love when the game’s stories are communicated clearly so I can experience the story rather than look for the story, if that makes any sense… thanks so much for making this, after watching I went and played up to where you left off and it made so much sense, looking forward to part 2 👍✌️

Boneworks is literally just the backend of MythOS.
Pick It Up is straight up made for "a future game" according to the composer, and it was later discovered to be DeadFM by people digging in the game files.

The devs confirmed that dead fm 98.6 is its own game and not bonelab. So is hall of the machine king. Dead fm was thought to be to large so they took a small section of it and turned it into boneworks and bonelab. Originally it was just hall of the machine king but that was too big so it became duck season and dead fm.

I played through the game without any boneworks experience. Watched the other vid and now I understand *EVERYTHING*
When I was playing a nullbody only run I got to the end, put the nullbody I brought through the game into the void taxi, spawned in nullbodies to say goodbye but when we were driving we ran over the same nullbodies so Jimmy saying we would just be going into circles was right
