Mateo’s last 4 losses at Wimbledon , Federer , Novak as no.1 , Alcaraz as no.1 and now Sinner as no.1 , he led Siner by a break in 3 out of the 4 sets and somehow ended up losing in 4 …..
@@malekat8539 He is not right. Being a break up ,doesnt mean you have to win a set against Sinner. Berettini never had the quality to do something more against the top players. He can play good and win a set but not more than that. He can be a break up million times but will always lose ,cos simply his backhand is too weak . Cannot beat the best players, cannot take them to 5 sets.
@@jonbonesmahomes7472 You're severely downplaying Matteo here. Matteo's backhand isn't as weak as you say it is because if it were so, Sinner would've dominated the baseline exchanges, which he didn't until Sinner went into Matteo's FOREHAND rather than his backhand. This isn't the same case as Stef in which he has a poor backhand topsin and slice but moves well laterally. Matteo has a good bh slice but poor movement in comparison to Stef, so what you do is (and what Gil explained) is to pull Matteo to the right and make him run for his forehand, which can cause more errors. If Matteo's backhand was so weak, he wouldn't have challenged any top player period.
I was listening to Dinara Safina and Chakvetsdze podcast a few days ago and they both were quite sure that Navarro should bit Naomi on grass. Anna is quite high on Navarro in general and Safina did like her chances before the tournament. It's interesting because I didn't see it coming at all.
Love Fognini's game..I always tune in if i see he's playing and he didn't disappoint. The way he casually hits incredible volleys. Of course if he has an off day the swaggering looks a bit odd! Big day coming up today - Andy murray and Emma Raducanu in mixed doubles ❤.
Two main take-aways from Sinner Berrettini match: 1. Berrettini maintained a determined positive mind set and body language, and improved his BH. He played as good as he could have. 2. Sinner, his level didn't waver too much, his mental game was steady and focused, even after a poor 3rd set. overall, great entertaining match to watch. Congrats to the Italians!
It was a joke. The states btw are multicultural, no American is really an American (except of the natives) by origin. Danes and Norwegians are both of the same ancestry, VIKINGS. do you think it's a coincidence that Ruud & Rune, have kind of similar surnames and love each other so much?
@@dromeus21 multicultural doesn't matter, this is about where the country's borders are, and btw, don't watch too many TV series about helmets and swords and think you understand this🤫
Great video as always, just a quick correction: I think you accidentally called Ruud Danish when you were talking about his Olympics prospects. Also the way you (and the announcers) pronounce Virtanen is good!
Osaka's career record of 14-12 on grass is even more underwhelming than I realized. It's strange to see an elite power player look this incompetent on a quick surface.
sinner had problems dealing with this low slices , he should had attacked those slow slices sinner conserving energy for later stages , better for him struff vs medvedev is very very very tough what tiafoe can do against alcaraz is unpredictable
Ruud won quite a lot of clutch points where he used a lot of backhand slices. Your point about Ruud floating his slices badly doesn't hold here in my opinion. His slicing was good and wasn't the reason for his loss. You might want to check the stats a little to be sure, because making Ruud stretch too much and drawing some slices in almost sure to lose points at the net by Fognini doesn't mean much. There you cannot literally hit drive backhands anyway. Ruud's backhand slices is actually way better than you are portraying it to be, especially after mid-2023.
Hey Gill! Random question: has anyone ever beaten Carlos who also earned more unforced errors in the same match as him? My theory is that a person has 0% chance of beating him if they maintain more unforced errors. I’m also posting on other sites just to increase the chance that o can get an answer to this question.
Continually baffles me that Americans still see Osaka getting beaten at Wimbledon as some sort of huge scalp. She has a TERRIBLE record on grass, and her grass warm-up events weren't great either Her best result was beating Mertens 2 and 4, who Raducanu just demolished 1 and 2. Navarro is a solid player, but she's got Shnaider next. That's a 50/50 match right now.
RE Ruud. Great analysis. Good you are pushing Ruud on Wimbledon. His plan to play Halle this year and properly prepare were thwarted by an intestinal parasite that also spoiled his semifinal chances at RG. As one of the best hard court players in the world, with an increasingly damaging serve, Casper should aim to go far at W. Casper had 18 aces in his 3 set win over Bolt in the first round. Regarding the Olympics...that would be Norway not Denmark 🙂
Yes, great analysis except the critical comments on his backhand slice. That was fine and wasn't the reason for the loss by any means. Fognini was just way better at generating winning shots (not necessarily winners) including on the forehand.
Disappointed with the Raducanu omission and disrespect in the bottom half prediction. You mentioned Sakkari though, which Emma has beaten. Poor judgement. Next is Lulu Sun.
Fabio unfortunately is always struggling physically. He's old and he has pain after every match, even at the best of three. I'm a fan of him, but I don't see Fognini passing Bautista. I hope I'm wrong.
@effeelle91 yes, I'll fade him this next match. It was the same situation with Broady last year when he beat Ruud. Beat Rudd and then the next game he got beat by Shapopalov
For comparison to Ruud on grass, Nadal had a horrid time on Wimbledon from 2012 to 2015 losing to opponents ranked under 100 4 times in row at Wimbledon. And he was already a 2-time Wimbledon Champ
Eh? It is a grass court; slice approach is the way to go. The ball doesn’t bounce, and the opponent has a slim chance to pass you. All the great net players have successfully approached the net with a slice backhand. The problem was that the slice backhand of Matteo was often not deep enough and that he made too many mistakes with his forehand on crucial points.
Yeah, a good one still works on a grass court. But not like it used to. Too much racket speed, too much spin in today's game... height alone doesn't make an effective approach usually. On the backhand that Matteo sliced, Alcaraz, Djokovic, Zverev etc. would have ripped the approach into a corner and made Sinner play on the move.
I usually agree with your analysises but I gotta say, I think almost everything you said about the Sinner v Berrittini match is off. I didn't see anything wrong with Sinners passing shots other than the fact that one of the few areas where Matteo was good was at the net. His net coverage was amazing. I also completely disagree with the praise of Berrettini's backhand slice. It was arguably the worst shot in the match. I only saw one shot that missed more frequently. He hit his slice backhand into the net an outrageous amount of times. And occasionally he would use it for an approach which Sinner would destroy him on. I also think Matteo's runaround forehand was terrible most of the match. Sinner read it a lot and would force Berrettini to move out to his forehand at pace. A shot that I am fairly certain he missed 100% of the time. I can't recall a single Berrettini running forehand that landed in the court
Berrettini is top-heavy re centre of gravity. He has long too- skinny legs but otherwise his body is fine for his height so naturally he'll tip backwards. Those skinny calves & thighs dont allow him to move quicker to get behind the ball more, as you suggested Gill.
Casper Ruud is Norwegian not Dane
Yeah, it was funny. But let's forgive Gill, brain-cramps happen )) I was arguing that Rune is Norwegian some time ago ))

Yet no one calls her a hard court merchant yet but clay courters get labeled as clay court merchants. The irony is hilarious 🤣.

Osaka is a poor mover. When she can't catch up to pound the ball she can't dominate rallies.
