    Incredible fall flow down here in Southeast Alabama. We have been blessed this year with our flows.

    We had so much rain here in north west ALABAMA the goldenrod was blooming like crazy but it got washed out every other day and not much nectar flow. Getting that great butterscotch smell coming from the hives after all the rain stopped for a couple days. Had 2 late swarms come to some boxes hard to believe they were swarming this late in the year. Great video and good looking bee's. ❤🐝🐝👍

    Hi Kamon and Laurel. This video couldn't have come at a better time! Here in E. TN, fall flow has been a bust as well. You can smell the "dirty socks," of the pollen, but very little honey/nectar. The white asters are blooming now, so we'll see how they do. Planning on feeding anyway for 2-3 weeks. I was so grateful to see this video because I was trying not to freak out about the lack of honey. Thank you for all you do!🐝🍯🌞🌻❤️

      North of Knoxville. Yeah, it was quite a surprise! They've been busting their tails just to feed themselves day by day. This is why, when people ask me, "How much honey do you get from your bees?" I just say, "Well, it depends..." Lol

    As I took my daily after work walk in the bee yard today I caught the sweet smell of "butterscotch". I've been waiting on that for a few weeks. That tells me the girls are finally getting fall nectar. Lifted a couple hives and could tell a big difference from a few days ago. The white asters are in full bloom now!

    Been feeding 1:1 since August for a total of 275 lbs of Sugar for 7 hives. Last week they stopped taking it so prepared 100 lbs of winter patties to put on in December once the cluster moves to the top of the box. Lack of rain here in NW Iowa caused alot of people to have queen issues.

    Hey Kamon....up here in KY we just had a huge turnaround with the fall flow. Once the "white asters" started blooming the hives really started packing on nectar. Was our saving grace last year too. The purple asters and goldenrod were a huge disappointment

    Thanks for the video K&L! I think location of the hives are the key to how much they can make on their own. Hives at my house is packing in nectar and my hives 7 miles away I’ve been having to feed for 2 months. Roll Tide! We’re down one but not out yet.

    Our knotweed is drying up in KY same time as the goldenrod. We have mite treatments on but will be condensing and bulking up this weekend. Our local bee group said we can feed pro sweet or 2:1 up to right about Thanksgiving, then do sugar bricks as insurance.

    Oddly enough we normally don’t have a fall flow. This year though they’ve filled boxes back up after extracting. Some think it’s the spotted lantern fly boosting the flow? We’ ll see after getting another year to look at under our belt to see if it’s a pattern beginning?

  • @micksbeesstephens5327

    Yep , I was surprised to see some hives lost weight in October after seeing so much lush foliage this fall. I think the added nectar this fall was washed away by the many heavy rains we had this fall, 3 weeks of 2 to 1 should do the trick., Thanks Kamon & Laurel

      I don’t use 2:1 people say it helps the bees store honey more for fall for winter food. But that is not true at all all it is is thicker sugar water 1:1 is all you need especially if you add honey b healthy and amino b boosters

    I never depend on a fall flow. When I harvest I leave their winter stores. I don't feed sugar syrup in the fall as it seems to promote robbing. I do give the nucs that are light fondant as a final winter prep. It is given when day time highs are consistently below 10 C.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  3 года назад

      We have had a nectar dearth since late June and the bees won't make honey till April in quantity to be pulled. We are careful in spring to not feed close to the honey flow and we super with empty combs specifically for honey. With a little care only pure honey is taken.

    Kamon - How do you know the bees aren't putting sugar water or "funny honey" in the honey frames you extract from? On a Langstroth hive I always pull the honey supers off before I feed sugar water. I don't see you having that option with the long hive. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

      Looks like a 2 frame feeder. Think they are 2 gallons or so, you can look them up on Mann Lake or Dadant fairly cheap.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  3 года назад

      This is a Dadant 1 gallon. They work, but in hindsight I would go with 1.5 gallon feeder or. 2 gallon. 1 is too small to be convenient when the bees need heavy feeding

    Have you tried the Apimaye Jumbo Feeders? If so, what did you think? I tested out 3 of them and they appear to work really well. I found only 2 dead bees between all 3 of the Jumbo Feeders. Sure makes feeding a LOT easier when you can feed 10 liters at a time. I liked them so well I ordered 36 more of them from Korhan.

    Wishing you luck for the fall and winter.
    Had a question also for you... for the mountain camp method, have you ever tested a variation of just sticking an in hive feeder inside the hive for all winter that ONLY has sugar in it (no syrup, but dry sugar only)? And how did it go? Is there any problem with the U shape edges harming the bees ability to get out of the feeder when its really cold out?

    • @ME_MeAndMyBees
      @ME_MeAndMyBees 3 года назад +2

      I'm sure Kamon will answer....
      Meantime :
      I would think the Bees would ignore a Frame Feeder with Sugar in it (?) Or not get it !?!
      Why you ask ? ... 🙄
      I would say, the Bees by nature, need to move "Up" to Feed during the Winter !
      So it's probably better to add that White Sugar above* the Colony Nest... That way, as they move up, around 1cm per Day. (That's what they say for us in the UK re Wintering Bees.) So they will rise up higher in the Hive, as Winter progresses, and when Spring comes, those lower Frames are empty of Stores, but good to go for the Queen to lay up that new Spring Brood !
      Hope this helps. 🤗
      Happy Beekeeping 2021.
      🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
      * You can add White Sugar to a Rapid Round Feeders, up top ! .... Just remember to remove that internal inner lid, so the Bees can 'Crawl' all over that Dry Sugar ! (Don't do this with Syrup, as they will Drown in it ! 🙄)
      I use a Rapid Round Feeder in my Horizontal Hive with great results. ✔️ It was Built for me, and has the Head Space under the Lifting Lid to accommodate a RR Feeder.
      Tip :
      If your limited in space in your HH, add some Sheets of Newspaper in the Middle of the Hive, and add a Pile of Dry White Sugar on top of it. Any moisture rising will be absorbed by the Paper and Sugar, and this, will result in a Sugar Block (Hard Candy) that the Bees lick, turn back to Syrup, and feed to them, or that new Brood. 👍
      My HH Frames are Jumbo Deeps Langstroth types., And, I have x 14 in the Hive ! So that's 30cm /12" per Frame (!) So the Bees have lots of Stores to access there, as they move 'across' the HH Frames, sideways (!) Or move up a tad, in an SOS situation !
      Win, win... 😏

    Hi, I have a problem.... or a suspicion rather and need info on bees. I have freinds who have a neighbor that seems to be mentally unstable, she is allways accusing them of things they don't do. They are a little afraid of her. Recently she bought a box of bees. My freind has a salt water pool . The neighbor came over to his yard and began to have a friendly conversation. She steered the conversation toward bees. He mentioned that he sees them drinking in his pool. He said the conversation was odd, she was to nice.
    Now, all of her bees are dead , she posted picts of the nest on FB and is accusing my freind of useing pesticides to kill them. Someone pointed out that the nest looked to void of food and said they starved... I don't know. But she said my freind was complaining about bees in her pool and that he killed them with pesticides. Now she has called the EPA to investigate.
    We suspect she bought the bees with the plan to set him up from the get go. It isn't illegal to kill bees unless you use pesticides. She said they died of pesticides b4 anyone can even look into that... like how can she be certain it was pesticides unless she sprayed them.
    So my question is this, has anyone heard of other ppl who will buy bees just to kill them and blame someone elese? She is the type of person who would, I am just wondering if ppl who investigate such things have found a pattern and this is like something maby activists do has it been done by others for revenge??
    My freinds are great ppl, even after all she has done they still try to be kind to her.
