    So awesome! 👍👍 I can so relate to a lot. I was a young man in my early 20s 2001 when I was diagnosed with MS. I did take the medications at first, injecting myself every day. Later I went vegan, 13 years ago now, no symptoms in since, no medicine. Funny, I came across a newsletter by McDougall some five years ago and I was really happy to for the first time hear that diet could actually play a part. My doctors here in Sweden have all said there is no correlation.... Talk to the hand.

      David Gardell Amazing! There is a new documentary called “Living Proof” where a young man is diagnosed with an aggressive form of MS, and his dad researches diet and so the young man changes his diet and twenty years later, looks like an all-star athlete...no symptoms! Congratulations...MS is now believed to be a vascular disease...be well!

    this makes me feel hopeful for the first time in eight years. My autoimmune disease is rare apparently, and I was pretty much told there was nothing I could do but join a suicide support group if I wasn't going to try experimental drugs. A vegan diet has help me reclaim my ability to walk and see again like her, but I think starches -which I don't currently consume that much- might be the missing link as I don't have any improvement elsewhere in my body. I do wish I could afford a McDougall chat though, but his starch solution book is almost just as good! :)

The Swanks Study followed hundreds of people for up to 50 years and found that 95% of people who ate below 10-15g saturated fat/day , their disease did not progress whatsoever and were walking and functioning normally in all regards. Normally you would have expected around 50% of those people to be severly disabled or dead after 10 years of diagnosis.
      Now you might be thinking why do doctors not tell us this? Honestly I have no clue, but the study is there and is regarded as the most effective MS intervention ever observed. There were no MRI machnes back then, and MCdougals study failed to replicate the results, but that was for only 1 year and with very sick people, and I'm not sure that the fat intake was followed as strictly as it should.

    Quick background - 45+ yr old asian male here, been a vegetarian all my life. Have been eating all kinds of veggies with rice all these years. Diagnosed with RRMS in 2014. I completely agree that a healthy diet is an important aspect for everyone. But I'm having a tough-time believing that diet alone can cure MS. MS is the kind of disease that can remain dormant for years and then show its ugly face. While I'm glad that Rabecca feels great and believes she no longer has MS, I would love to hear if she is continuing on the diet and whether she had any re-lapses - given that the video was posted more than 2 years ago.

      Guy withMS, a vegetarian diet is one of the causes of MS. It is as you say, not the cure. A vegan diet is even worse. Most junk foods are plant-based. Keto is the best diet for MS. Then you need a detox like Chlorine dioxide. Some say intermittent fasting AKA one meal a day can be helpful which is probably true.

    • @anitawiglit1806
      @anitawiglit1806 6 лет назад +2

      it depends on what caused the MS, it's only loosely agreed upon censuses that it's strictly idiopathic auto immune disorder.
      if the MS is caused by infection/fungus, or from weakened blood brain barrier, diet will help immensely.
      other causes, most likely not.

    I love the thought of a "cure", but as someone that was essentially symptom free for 10 years or so, and is now dealing with new lesions and symptoms, I am skeptical. I say this because as we know, the "professionals" don't know how we get it, don't know how the western medicines work and cannot say who is going down which path and as far as I know, there's no verified "cure" at this point. All this said, I love your story and I am going to research Dr. McDougall while I continue my research into Dr. Wahls. I wish you all the best for your health and happiness!

      We should know what the cause of MS is. MS is from Epstein Barr virus. So is diabetes, Lyme and many other diseases are either from the Epstein Barr, or Strep virus, or any of the others. There is no autoimmune disease. God made us in his image and he would not have made our bodies to turn on and destroy us. I knew I was right but I wasn't finding any Drs that could tell me what causes MS. A precious friend in England was talking one day about her pain levels going down since she started juicing celery. When I asked her about it she told me to look up Anthony William the medical medium. The first article I found was like a miracle. I was right. Not our bodies turning on itself, a virus that our bodies are trying to fight for us. What do they treat us with? Cortisone. The drs say our immune system is overworking and to compensate, it starts eating the myelin from the nerves. So of course they have to give us meds to lower our immune system. The body is a wonderful miracle. They put us on these DMDs (I have never been on any DMDs. That is such a crock!! I have had this disease for 45 yrs. That is why our diet is so important. No dairy, eggs, candy, or processed foods. We can all be on different diets but my heart is full knowing that I can and do change because of Anthony William. Loved your story.

      @@firstimpressions1703 Hey there. While there are no verified "cures" for MS at this time, there are many projects that have promising results. Unfortunately, some like Bexarotine, that show effectiveness is repairing the myelin sheath, are for too dangerous to take as a medication. Fingers crossed though for that one. For all the others that say they're "cured", I've yet to see a verified case but I do have personal experience with extended remissions that would seem like I've been cured. But who knows? It's true that MS hits everyone in a unique way and every current drug or therapy is more or less effective for the same reason. So, even drug pushing doctors tend to support the sorts of healthy diets associated with the various food based therapies, which means we can all eat better together in communal support. :)

    The more food treatments I hear about the more confused I get. The Swank diet with its years of research suggests very low saturates. The Wahls Protocol says animal fats are fine as long as you have sulpher rich veg+9 cups of greens+no diary/gluten. And this with the starches as well? Whats right and what isn't?

    • @imaginarynumber8520
      @imaginarynumber8520 5 лет назад

      Wahls is just a liar trying to scam you. The cures recommended by liars sometimes work but for very different reasons than those advertised. Usually, quacks like Wahls will tell you to eliminate a lot of plant foods, and it's possible that among all the foods you eliminate, some were triggering your autoimmune disease. Basically, it's an elimination diet. McDougall also recommends an elimination diet as a last resort.

      Claire, diet done properly cures SOME people that are classified as MS. McDougall says around 70%. Probably it's lower than that but it's surely above 0%. Given that it costs nothing to do the diet and there are no negative side effects, there is absolutely no reason to not do it. All the ideas of McDougall are provided for free in his website so you don't even have to pay him to do his diet. It's all free. He cares for patients unlike the quacks selling you stupid books.
      Your neurologist does not have a theory that explains MS and he makes money when you're sick like almost everyone else. The drugs that he gives you do not even attempt to cure the root cause of the problem. McDougall has a theory and he attempts to cure the root cause.

Multiple Sclerosis is named simply as it states, multiple lesions that may change but do not disappear. By definition, this patient suffered from a different neurological disorder at the time. Many diseases present as MS. The introduction of the MRI did lead my neuros to diagnose too early a disease that takes many criteria over a long history to obtain a definitive MS diagnosis. Even myself, having been diagnosed with MS in 87 has still had to go through re-evaluation to confirm my initial diagnosis to make sure that misdiagnosis due to presence of lesions only; without follow up to see if they had disappeared. Mine have only ever increased in size and number so I do have MS. Having had it for over 40 years I am still in good health and most of the time can lead a pretty normal interesting life. Eating well will make you feel better and keep you healthy but it will not cure true MS unfortunately.

    I am 20, and I was just recently diagnosed with MS. After a lot of research, I realized medications do very little for those who suffer from MS (which my doctor did not like hearing at all) and that the natural approach has blessed so many lives in actually treating their MS.
    But this is my issue, my lesions are currently active, and EVERYONE is telling me to take steroids, even some of those sold on the natural approach. I see you as a leader in the natural MS movement, and I would really value your opinion on this. Should I take the steroids to stop the current lesions or not?

      i think taking a short course of steroids (3 days) is definitely okay when you're having an acute MS attack/relapse. i was diagnosed with MS 10 years ago and always refused to take conventional drugs like interferons and such, which i still think is the best decision i've ever made in my life; and in spite of all the fear-mongering and threats by doctors who said that i would be in a wheel-chair within 10 years if i didn't take any of their medication, i'm still walking, running, swimming, you name it, hell, i'm not even needing glasses. so how did i do it?: i'm on a vegan, plant-based, oil-free and mostly gluten-free diet, which means that i rarely ever relapse, although it does happen when i'm experiencing emotionally stressful situations that are sometimes unavoidable and i have no control over. my last MS flare-up was 3 years ago when my father died, and it was of epic proportions, meaning that i couldn't walk and was basically paraplegic for several weeks, and i did go to the hospital to get IV steroids at that point, simply because the stuff _does_ alleviate symptoms very quickly and it's not like i intend to take it on a daily basis - we're talking about only a few days in an emergency situation. so for me, it's about weighing up pros and cons: in case of a severe MS attack, i simply think that it's worse to let the inflammation rage inside the body while destroying more and more myelin than to take steroids every once in a while to stop further nerve damage. in other words, steroids are just for emergency situations, but nutrition (=vegan, oil-free diet) and life-style changes are the real treatment for MS and they work a 100% - don't let ignorant, money-hungry doctors tell you otherwise or talk you into taking useless and even harmful drugs, they don't care about you or your well-being, all they care about is profit or they just don't know any better. so don't be afraid of the disease but educate yourself about it because there ARE super-effective natural treatments out there. don't do things that feel wrong or don't make sense just because a doctor said so (oftentimes doctors know nothing about MS), but trust your own gut feeling and common sense instead and stay strong! i wish you all the best.

    True, a good diet is very important. But with Relapsing/Remitting MS, don't the symptoms go away? Then months or years later, they may return? For some, never. For others, they continue. For too many, they progress. The injectable medications available as a treatment for MS, do not cure this disease, but they slow down the progression. I would contact those who are well known in this field for their opinion.

      I was on copaxone daily injections and now on Gilenya tablet once a day. Have had no issues with either as to symptoms. I have however noticed that my mood has seriously improved on the Gilenya, which has been a plus. Healthy eating does help but I find that promising cures through diet a bit of a stupid thing to say. I wonder if all these people bringing false hope to MS patients, realise most of us were on healthy diets and still were diagnosed with MS, so besides helping relieve symptoms, diet change isn't going to do much else and certainly isn't a cure.

      @aareona4sure 3 года назад

      @@TisEYEthe1 Hello Rebecca, my life has changed so much since I posted that response 3 years ago, especially in the last 4 months. I began Ocrevus around mid-2017. My last treatment was a couple of months ago, and I decided, and feel confident that that would be my final treatment. In Feb 2020, just days before pandemic shut-down, I suffered a mental-health breakdown and began seeing a therapist and working on accepting the reality of this disease in my body and the damage it had done with my cognitive system; forgetting, stuttering, moments of disorientation, not being able to run or strength train like I use to before. Shortly after my mental health break-down, I began daily yoga practice, lots of meditation and self-reflection.
      By the summer of 2020, months after my break-down, I began to research natural medicines for depression and once again, I ran into psilocybin mushrooms (did so years ago in grad-school before and attempted to grow but failed). I “accidently” found a syringe that had some medicine left and a substrate jar from the last order. In short, I inoculated it with full success. I began weaning myself of anti-psychotics and anti-depression drugs and began micro-dosing on psilocybin mushrooms. I also discovered lion mane mushrooms for regenerating damage to nerve myelin sheath and began to take that too.
      About 4 months ago, in February 2021, a year after my mental-health breakdown, I completely stopped eating meat; my diet consists of eating fish, and lots of fruits and vegetables and healthy carbs. I limit my sugar intake as well. Then, about a month ago, I woke up and notice a significant reduction in body numbness and tingling. Even my cognitive symptoms are gradually improving with cognitive therapy and diet changes.
      I have concluded that pharma-drugs are a big business and is unfortunately tied to the government. Their goals seem to be to keep people on medications, thus provide some relief, but enough to keep them in business.
      This entire experience with MS appears to be another blessing in disguise (just like when I became homeless with two kids in 2007). Because it is teaching me to watch what I put in my body; to listen to my body and care for myself more. It has brought my child-hood traumatic past to the surface, giving me the opportunity to heal my child-hood wounds and learning to love thy self😊 As a result, I feel more connected to my loved ones and the environment.
      Rebecca, the fact that you sent me that post just reaffirms to me that everything happens as it should (I recently began doing research again on diets for MS) and I am super-excited now because I feel I found what I was looking for with Dr. McDougal diet. There are no accidents, and nothing is by luck. Everything happens for a reason; we create that reason because we are, in fact, creators of our own reality. And this is my personal truth, my reality.
      And can I ask you for an update on yourself as well? I hope my response is not too long😊Thank you, my friend, Peace.

    This is so confusing and discouraging. Everything I've been reading is to eat NO grains or legumes. What about Dr. Wahls and her recovery with a strict paleo diet??

    • @PatiMascarenhas
      @PatiMascarenhas 8 лет назад +4

      Its really confusing, I know. I am impressed with Dr. Wahls improvement but I think she is going against a lot of evidence in relation to saturated fats. Check out George Jelinek's work. Best of luck for you!

      I would agree that grains are bad, I personally don't eat any (except raw/bloomed truly wild rice -- not farmed). Legumes, are ok though (soaked, then cooked). Dr Wahls is eating a LOT of veggies, so whatever else "bad" she might be getting (e.g. saturated fats), it's possible that the huge quantity of veggies she eats, keep that at bay.

    • @PatiMascarenhas
      @PatiMascarenhas 8 лет назад +1

      Yes, I agree with that. Thats the only thing I am following in Wahls now. Tons of veggies :)

    • @levipatrick
      @levipatrick 8 лет назад +2

      Dr Wahls was eating organ meat and if you looked at a plate, it was 1/6th or less with veggies being most of her diet. Dr Swank's less than 8 grams of saturated fat is probably what she ate. Dr Wahl has since written a book with vegetarian and vegan options BUT Dr Swank and McDougall have a LOT od science to back up their claims. Best of luck!

    Changing any diet to something else is likely to make you feel different or better for a time. Also what is working for one person may not work for another and presenting this as a kind of cure all for multiple sclerosis is really irresponsible. What happens when someone who has been following this diet for a few years and thinks they're cured suddenly has a flare up? That's probably pretty devastating. Also what if her improved health isn't because of this diet itself but because of certain things she cut out? We have no clue what she was eating before her MS diagnosis. We have no clue if her exercise routine has changed. What is her sleep routine like and did she change it after diagnosis? Cuz that'll effect energy for sure. Obviously so will carbs and if she was eating very few of those before her flare up she was bound to feel better incorporating carbs no matter what. There are a lot of unknowns here. Has she continued to follow up with a neurologist through the years? Looking good in one follow up scan doesn't mean more damage won't occur later down the line. I had no symptoms before my first MS flare up occured and yet when I lost use of my arm and most sensation on half my body and my first scan was done, they said the damage had been building up over time. So, if she believes she's cured is she possibly not noticing little symptoms that indicate the MS is still there? I've regained sensation and function on the affected half of my body. I've changed my diet substantially. And yeah I feel better. Does not mean I'm cured. It means my nervous system was able to rewire itself. We need to be really careful not to equate anecdotes with evidence. Its going to break somebody's heart when they get told this will fix everything and one day they realize it hasn't. Plus they'll have more permanent damage to their nervous system. I respect that she didn't want to take a certain medication but there is more than one type of MS med out there. Also sending this message that no one should take medication and all their problems will be fixed by diet is very dangerous advice. It's your choice. If you're being prescribed one of the meds with more wicked side effects I don't blame you for not wanting to take them. But giving that kind of advice to someone else could leave them in worse shape than you found them. It's been four years since this video was posted. Invite her back on to do an update video. I hope she's still doing this well but what if she's not? A lot can change in 4 years. That's why most studies occur over a long period of time. And if she has gotten worse and McDougall is ignoring that then he's messed up. I'm not trying to be a buzz kill but someone really needs to play devil's advocate here. Also; to the family and friends of MS. Patients, it can be really annoying when you give unsolicited advice. And if you're advising your loved one to avoid medication, you've essentially just put them in a game of Russian roulette. Advice that isn't asked fore is incredibly frustrating and in medicinal cases can be dangerous. Be very very careful. Your role is not to be an accessory doctor your role is to provide a support system. Doctors don't acquire egregious amounts of med school debt so they can hurt people. There are easier ways to make money. Doesn't mean there aren't bad apples but this blanket assumption that doctors are just out for profit is madness.
