Gigli is the only tenor (I have 18 different versions) who finishes this aria with a topC cry of triumph. His 1940 recording is one of my favourite records. Gigli discussed this role with Puccini, so I have often wondered why other tenors omit this ending.
Brian Lloyd ,I agree not many Tenors did this in such an impressive way and with such Emotion If you like this please do your self the favor and u tube Sandor Konya.Gigli was his inspiration and Konya sung it up to the mis 60's also on Stage . He ended this precious Aria in the same style I m sure you like it. Konya's singing was very similar to Gigli but he had a very different voice. He was not a Tenore di grazia, but a Tenore Heroico,he was the Lohengrin of the late 50's up to the mid 70's Enjoy
Bergonzi did also, at the Met in 1960: it was on these blessed years, his top hotes were amazing, like the Db at the end of act 1 in Trovatore (Met also in 1960) or in Duke-Gilda duet (Met also but in 1964). The less known Vasile Moldoveanu add also this high note at the end of this Manon Lescaut scene, at least at the Met again, in 1985.
chiedoooooooooo 1:34 open - and then piangoooooooooooo 1;59 - no one. else. no one. and it is a top B, not a C. (and by the way, listen to Gigli repeat "ebben" and insert that little whispered "Grazie"...fabulous)
Hi is this really live?, not that matter much, I am sure in those times they would do one take, not take after take and then patch. This is a very fine recording, thanks for posting.
These 1950 recordings are a very interesting addition to Gigli's recorded output, but I think that in common with many tenors (Carraras, Martinelli, Fleta, Pavarotti, Lauri-Volpi etc etc...) he went on too long and should have retired gracefully after World War two.

Magnifico Gigli!!!
Words are so inadequate when describing this phenomenal rendition- unsurpassed!
From time to time, I return to this performance just to relive Gigli doing some of the best work of his career at nearly 60 years of age.

He shines at the end and bring all of those with a heart to tears.
What astounding breath control !!!
Die beste und ergreifendste Aufnahme dieser Arie. Gigli einzigartig!
This a great performance.. Gigli and Guerrini, two of my favorites, can't be outdone..
The wonderful Gigli singing his heart out!
What a great singer!
Thank you.
Divino .

Mario del Monaco also sang this aria with this cry, but on a high B (if my ears don't lie to me)
Can you published that please

Che voce squillante, e aveva 60 anni.

No his voice from 1940-1955 was collosal!
Great voice!!!
Greater than 1914-1940.
So special so sweet
Are you deaf?
He didn't. Gigli was very much in excellent voice.
Seriously, retired, when he was still this good,I don’t think so

This is insane
