I’m 25 years old, I was 11 years old when AC2 came out. I vividly remember my uncle getting it for me, unboxing it, and playing the first 14 hours nonstop. Now as an adult I appreciate the game even more, replaying the entire Ezio trilogy once a year. As an adult I have a huge appreciation for the historical settings, characters, writing, and how the game is written in a way to intertwine with real world history. The OG AC games would never be made in 2024. AC1-3 was a fun ride.

As a kid, going from Assassin's Creed 1 to Assassin's Creed 2 felt like a giant leap. The graphics, gameplay, story, cutscenes, characters, missions, open world, OST, etc. everything was improved. It was better than AC1 in pretty much every conceivable way. It feels like a biggest leap in sequel even today. No other game sequel made me feel this way even though I know some sequels have much greater improvements compared to AC1 to AC2. The fact that AC2 came only 2 years after AC1 is what makes it more impressive to me.

This is my first time hearing about the DLCs, i played AC2 sometime in the early 2010s
I distinctly remember the man with the finger missing and then the next scene being the one shown at 16:07.
I was very young but I remember being confused!
Trip down memory lane for sure, thank you!

I think AC2 just perfectly hit the formula for me. Renaissance italy is a fantastic setting for an ac game. The characters were amazing. Ezio was a character you felt attached to as he grows up. It also feels connected to a bigger picture much more than most of the AC games. That cliffhanger ending was still one of the most memorable in gaming for me. Although the present day aspect of AC has always been mixed, AC2 and AC brotherhood did it best and made me truly invested in uncovering the mystery of ezio’s significance in a grander story. I feel like most AC games after the original trilogy removed the overarching story and I get why but it lost something.

I've played just about all the 13 mainline games and their DLCs, with Mirage being the only one I have left to play, and I have AC 2 as my overall favorite in the series. The Italian Renaissance with the gorgeous cities and music are pretty much why this is my favorite game, plus there's the great cast of characters and there are no 100% sync objectives yet.

I personally think that both DLCs are pretty fun, but the problem is that they force us to play them and it tanks the pacing of the main story. What they should've done is that once you beat the game, you get a dialog from Rebecca saying that those memories have been restored, and now you can play through them if you chose and have all dlcs as post game content. You could say that Desmond was playing through those memories on his way to Monteriggioni in the modern day to achieve better synchronization with Ezio and make it easier for him to live through Ezio's latter memories in Brotherhood.

This masterpiace needs a remake, I played it again recently and I maintain that it is my favorite story in the entire franchise (removing the DLCs that, in my opinion, were made thinking about quantity and not quality as you pointed out) the story is a 10/10, the tombs to get Altair's armor are still some of my favorite gameplay in the franchise. I would pay 80 dollars for a remake of this game.
It is true that nostalgia plays an important role, but I am sure that the quality of this game, brought to the standards of today's triple A games, could compete for game of the year like Resident Evil 4 did.

One of the best games ever made, for me. It's definitely my favourite Creed game, and while a part of that is nostalgia, it really does hold up very well, especially if you have the Ezio collection. I've just finished it again on my latest full series run through.
I agree about the dlc being one of the weakest parts. Personally, I thought the Savonarola lieutenant on the ship was by far the worst one to get. It took lots of trial and error, working out which order you had to kill the many, many guards so you wouldn't be seen. I didn't care about the codex page roadblock myself, though. I don't think I've ever reached that point in the story without having all the pages. This game just makes me want to collect and do everything. Well, except maybe the feathers. I think I've only ever grabbed all 100 of those once.
But yeah, it's a true gem. Some of the best characters, the most memorable intro, and lots of gleeful moments. Hugging Leonardo, the mother/son discussion on outlets, and the way Ezio says "madonna" with such reverence (and lust.) Then there's that one npc line that sometimes plays when someone watches Ezio jumping and climbing around that always makes me smile, and which sums up young Ezio so well: "He must be late... And SHE must be beautiful!"

17:40 thats because ac 2's level design were terrible for stealth. It has lot of stealth mechanics like cover assassinations and other equipments. But all of them useless 99% of the time because of target's locations are always in a small area with little to no cover.
Ac 1 never had half of these mechanics but stealth was doable because of map design.
But ac 2 is still my favorite along with one

Edit: I went on a bit of a tangent, did not realise how long this got. Sorry 😬
Honestly set the standards I expect from sequels in gaming and holds all these years later. Massive improvements in detail and environment, better controls and stealth mechanics, better combat, a better notoriety system, just better everything. The story was good in ac1, it had me engaged, AC2 had me fully immersed. It was the first game I ever 100% and it does hold up for the time period it was in. There's just a lot to like about it, and people who hate on it, clearly aren't people who were there for the inception of assassin's creed. It honestly is THE highlight of assassin's creed, even compared to the likes of black flag and origins (which are highlights in their own rights), but every aspect of this game can be classed as passable to exceptional, and that's rare to find in games, even with the titles you love the most. It's not nostalgia either, I can continually come back to the whole ezio trilogy and get fully immersed back into it. Great storytelling, great gameplay, great characters, it is a game that is simply timeless. The same cannot be said about any other assassin's creed unfortunately. Black flag has great gameplay, the story's alright, but the games too big and tedious to keep me coming back and completing it fully. Origins is a great game like ac2, but the fake RPG aspect of it keeps me from enjoying it more. Make it slightly smaller (like honestly imagine if you had to travel all the way across Italy in ac2 like in origins just to travel to the next city, it would be dead annoying) and give it the unity system and you'd have the perfect assassin's creed game, that would've topped ac2.

For the two DLCs, I have the Battle of Forli as one of my favorite DLCs in the series while Bonfire of the Vanities as one of my least favorites.
While they both would have been better off as optional DLCs or as side content, the Battle of Forli at least fleshes out Caterina and gives both her and Forli more of a role in the story rather than just being in one mission while the other cities got to have multiple missions. Plus we get to fight in a battle which is almost always fun in a video game.
The Bonfire of the Vanities, on the other hand, is my overall least favorite part of AC 2. While Ezio's speech is iconic, having to assassinate 9 targets in a memory sequence right at the end of the story is completely ridiculous. And it's even more annoying that half of them require not getting detected. If they had reduced the amount of targets to say 5 with no requirement to remain unseen, the villain was more memorable, and the sequence didn't take place around the end of the story then this DLC would have been a lot better. It's a shame it has to be played through and it can't be skipped in the Ezio Trilogy. Also great point with the ridiculousness of Ezio spending 9 years looking for the guy who stole the Apple from him just to find him in his hometown, which makes up over 1/3rd of Ezio's time in AC 2.

I also like how in Brotherhood Rodrigo develops a begrudging respect for Ezio, constantly telling his brash son to step back for a moment. I already agree that Ezio letting him go capped his development off for the game perfectly, but watching how Rodrigo acts in the sequel. Honestly, it almost makes one of the most awful historical figures likeable in a way. It feels like Rodrigo is spending a lot of time in reflection. I will agree the codex hunt can be annoying, now when I replay I unlock all view points as early as possible and I've collected them before Sequence 14 but it's quite a slog! AC2 has like 73 view points!!
Oh, one thing about Sequence 13, it's a call back to AC1 hunt for the nine. It does take some practice but after doing it enough times it becomes a lot easier. I can admit it can be tedious though, I appreciate the call back to AC1 all the same. There's an ideal path for most of the targets that leads to an easy kill, for Santa Maria, it's basically the same path at the start as what you would do if you wanted the treasures in the tower, except you kill ONLY the required guards. Don't waste your time otherwise.

Dude I just decided to start all the ac games after years of blindly hating cus of ubi and so far I’m on revelations and my favorite would’ve been ac2 but 2/3 in I was like god damn this game drags on especially cus the missions get way worse. I had no idea they were dlc that’s wild. I really wish those were optional bc I would’ve liked the game a lot more. I will say tho it was cool how seamless it was I’ve never seen it done like that. I also thought halfway through the game the story goes from awesome and sad but inspiring to a little cliche and cheesy. Like I for one did not like that everyone was an assassin cus it just felt unbelievable and lame. Also the scene where they all jump from the tower made me laugh cus half of them shouldn’t be able to do that and they just go one after another so they’re probably all falling on top of each other. but yeah good start bad dlc decent ending
