How is that we can think in the same musicals patterns and phrazes? Different backgrounds, spoken languages, ethnicities etc.
But we speak same language - MUSIC!

It's LIKE a trumpet. but it's NOT like a trumpet. Levy's being careful not to shrill it out up high. A trumpet would be screaming, and the hair'd be standing up, playin' those licks on a horn. Levy's playing with the same intonation high and low. I couldn't do that with a trumpet and I can't do it with a harp.
Unlike most harp players, Levy has a deep understanding of the music theory. There aren't a whole lotta harp players who see the music like a jazz pianist.
Anyway, I started out on sheet music with a trumpet, and then taught myself harp by ear one lonely winter up on the Gunnison. I'd heard of Howard Levy, and that he got all the notes out of a diatonic, but I also heard he tinkered with the reeds, too. But I didn't know about "over-blow" until just a few weeks ago. I'm almost afraid to try it, for fear of blowing up my special 20s.
Edit: Miroslav Tadic. I need to remember that name. That's some world-class pickin'.

@deejohns47 I think that Levy has sometimes issues with the pitch of the notes. It's still very impressive and sometimes VERY beautiful but I think that other famous overblowers are more in tune even if they don't quite reach the level of technique Levy has achieved (Titus Koon, Sebastien Charlier, etc.)

Sometimes he doesn't land completely on pitch, but as a family friend of Howard's I have been listening to his music from childhood, and well beyond the level of technique I think he is far more creative, original and talented than the vast majority of his colleagues in the music world. In my opinion he is in that rare category of musicians who are on a level that few people can even fully appreciate.

+Bertrand Werbrouck i thought i was the only that thought his notes were off pitch, it's pretty sad cause i thought he was the best and if the best can't get in tune notes who can?

+harmonica guitar I think it's tricky for everyone to make overblows sound good and in pitch. Sometimes I recognize them only by "tone", sometimes they're so well executed that I don't. As a player, I think that overblows can only sound good if your tone is already very very good and if you work very hard to dig their sound, how special they can be tonewise. That's why I stopped practicing them... but one day maybe^^

There is no one greater than Levy when it comes to getting a full chromatic range from a diatonic harmonica. BUT......and this is my frustrated realization (and opinion as a longtime harp player)....... it STILL sounds like a diatonic harp when it comes to the fullness(or lack of same) of many of the notes. Thus, whenever I hear him play....it still sounds a bit cheesy compared to his accompaniments' "fuller" sounds from their instruments. I really feel Hpward needs to move over to the Chromatic
