I was walking down the street over Coyoacán (México city), it was 25 years ago, during nineties. There we're 3 bookstores for buying alternative music, and I bougth it by chance and curiosity... Since then the journey keeps happily going on.
I love the lyrics: "I want power, because it feels good". They are so blunt and honest, something most of the elite would only say out loud on their deathbed
I want power, because it feels good. I want power - I'll wash America with blood. I want power: a clear blue light in the sky. I feel power, running through my veins and out my eyes And into empty, godforsaken minds without reality. I feel power. I feel a sacrifice. I am dead to right or wrong. I want power, just like our father knew. I want power, I'll put my hands in you. I want power, though the earth is lost and spinning. I feel power, buried in the ground where twenty million Died like heroes stealing this same power that I'm feeling. I feel power. I feel a sacrifice. Now my blood is feeling clean. And I feel the power burning like a spear inside of me. I feel good. I feel right. I feel a sacrifice.
It's what made me look up as I was listening to the album for the first time. Not convinced by the songs that come before it, but this came on and grabbed me, and then the Paint It Black chanting chorus comes in in the background and I was mesmerised.
I must become an adult in discovering music like Swans to apreciate the deep of sound and lyrics of this band. What a great adventure is in a front of me.
I don't disagree, it'd be cool to see, but at this point it feels like that would be like asking a band to play another band's songs. That said, seeing this song performed live would break my brain in half.
I first heard Blind then the album . It’s pretty special . It grieves me how when this was originally released I was still young and buying The Wonderstuff , , Pop Will Eat Itself, & Gothy stuff like This Mortal Coil & The Mission whom were great for sure but never heard this band and definitely feel like I missed out 🐢👍
I really love lots of bands and artists but there are only couple which have 10+ albums and all of them are really excellent in their own way. It's insane but everything that they did in the 80s, 90s and have been doing since 2010's are so different and yet so alike and all of them so beautiful and special
you cannot forget the 2000’s too, from 1999-09 micheal went as the angels of light and not only are all of those albums masterpieces as well they’re integral to swan’s musical evolution and can be heard throughout the revival albums, especially leaving. which is actually just a stealth reunion of all the angels of light members. there’s also the body lovers/the body haters from 98 that clearly inspired a lot of revival swan’s sound and structure as well. swans never stopped, only lost the name for a while
Everybody thinks of Swans as a very simple band. And yes, they use repetitiveness a lot in their newer music. But this whole album is so complex in its composition, better than many prog rock bands' best albums. They have very versatile instrumentations going on here, and change from dark to uplifting themes within seconds. I mean, all the little different parts and the great chorus off of "Love Will Save You" just is one of many examples for that.
@@paolovallejo5500 Well, I mean they don't do that much of complex songs. It's not like they would change chords every two seconds or use strange time signatures like, say, the mars volta or King Crimson. They have so many songs with just one or two chords repeated over and over again in it. Which is cool, not bad. So they play simple music. That it's not easy to play those power chords and hard drum fills for 10 minutes is another story. So it's of course not simple to play those songs, and surely their music is no easy listening or simple to understand. They just rather focus on simple, mantra like repetition to achieve what other bands would do with chord changes - to evoke a certain feeling.
@@leonardsimonis2376 You know, I used to get away from my metalhead classmates at high school because listening to them speak about virtuosity in juvenile music without spirit was tiresome. I am not going to assume you are one of them, of course, and you put as a reference two bands considered prog, so it's ok. Since high school I never cared much about virtuosity. Pink Floyd did not care about it either and I was obsessed with them by the age of 13. They had ideas, a concept, a melody and then I went to more underground music and found bands like Swans and, just like when I was younger, it filled my spirit. Virtuosity is ok but not just for the sake of it. I do not disagree with what you said, but to call Swans "simple music", well, it might be repetitive, but the concept, the ideas, it's not an easy thing to come up with for truly virtuoso musicians. They can do complex solos, sure, but to come up with such a rich inner world filled with melodies, textures and poetry, well, let's see them try. This was not an attack, cheers mate.
I think I might be slightly autistic or something because I love repetitive music (when it’s good music), like a lot, this is one of my favorite songs and eras of Swans
It's called minimalist music. It d Doesn't matter how many chord they change in a song. Joy division have made too but the deep interpretation is what matter. There are dozen bands like them. Maybe you're too young to understand what I mean.
I remember this song especially from their concert in VK Brussels. You could feel the shock wave of every note from the bass player going through my hair, chest, clothes... Intense.
To me this has got to be the most enrapturing intro to any Swans song. I think the guitar is playing a G minor while the bells/chimes(?) are in G major.
I have this horrible vision featuring Vladimir Putin in his candlelit and glorious marble bathroom - clutching the Shower head and singing along to this .....sorry Swans ❤️🏴

Deliciously villainous yet profoundly sad.
From all the fools yelling "nobody gets swans like me" you were - up to my knowledge - the only one to feel what this song is about.

Do you feel power?

Probably my favorite drumming ever in a song

Indeed, they are one of the greatest and most underrated band in the world no many people knows them
This whole ablum is nothing but musical genius. Honestly man its been awhile since ive hear music this good
I wish the Swans would play some of their old material in their concerts.

This sounds to me like Paint It Black crossed with one of the more unbearably unhappy songs off Closer. Epically great.
2022, Swans still blowing minds
All the world's dictators are in a band and this is their song.
Why dictator? You just need one american president
My favorite track off of White Light. Listening to it, I feel power flowing through my veins and out my eyes

also during the 1997 final tour of the original lineup they would play songs live that would end up on the 1999 angels debut album
