We weren’t there, so we really don’t know everything. The marriage between FDR and Eleanor was doomed from the start, first because of his crazy mother and then by E’s constant pregnancies. Also, FDR was used to getting and having anything he wanted, and a girlfriend on the side was fairly typical of wealthy men at the time. It’s all terribly sad, and while I would never condone unfaithfulness, America benefited greatly because of their marriage.
Anna must've truly hated her mother! How could she help FDR betray Eleanor with Lucy Mercer? What kind of daughter does that to her mother? Absolutely sickening!
I get why you would feel that way. Anna was also FDR's daughter. Her crippled father got no personal, intimate affection from Eleanor. He was fighting a world War. His blood pressure was off the charts. Private time with Lucy gave him a small break from the burden of responsibility.
@gailmpintos7232 I'm not buying those weak excuses. I use a wheelchair and take blood pressure meds.Eleanor stopped being intimate with FDR when she discovered he was having an affair with Lucy Mercer earlier in their marriage. I wouldn't be intimate with a man who cheated on me either!
I am not disagreeing with the sentiment. However, Anna had 2 parents that she loved. And her father was commander in chief, fighting the enemy on 2 fronts. I know Eleanor felt betrayed. And she made it clear she would never be a wife to him again. Eleanor sought interpersonal relationships with others. At least, thru Anna, FDR kept it discrete. Nothing public to embarrass his family.

Having a gf appears to be typical today for men rich or poor.

Her mother was a closet lesbian and their marriage was a business and working relationship of convenience. They were liberal and rich. Go figure...
Anna betrayed her mother by hosting Lucy Mercer at the White House when FDR promised never to see Lucy again!
So she kept his love life secret
i don't like her( she was jelouse, tried to be like her mother but not from the soul.
