At the time of Live Aid I was serving in the British Royal Marine Commandos in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. We listened to it on the radio. We were surrounded by the full horror of the Famine, but when Queen came on the radio those poor soles who were there even reacted in a very positive way. I remember that a lot of us Royal Marine Commandos were crying watching some of the children dancing along, I'm teary eyed just remembering. I looked around at men I had fought alongside, who were tough, hardened Royal Marine Commandos who had fought a life and death war against Argentinian's in 82. By the end of Queen's set we were dancing with the children. It went along way to help build their trust in us. The famine is only one of many terrible memories I have from 34 years of active service, and over 2 years hospitalisation. But when I remember the smiles on the children's faces, and their laughter at the terrible way we danced always reminds me that humanity will always find it's way through even the worst of times. I only watched it for the first time last year, my son put it on the TV. A lot of memories came back and a lot of tears. My amazing Wife took me to see Queen at Wembley, U.K., in 1986 two weeks after I got back from Ethiopia as a surprise, we also went to the last Queen concert they ever did. I saw Queen live 8 times in all (my wife only 6 ha ha), they were incredible live. And yes, I am an old fart.
For someone of BOWIE’S caliber, and own legendary status, to feel that way about following Queen’s set… Can you imagine how everyone ELSE that day felt about going on after them?

And remember, the Live Aid audience weren't a Queen crowd. Most if not all of the tickets were sold out before the band were confirmed and yet they still had the whole of Wembley at a wave of Freddie's hand! And 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' yep, a Queen original, written by Freddie as a homage to Elvis.

I was a big Queen fan in 1985 and watched on my black and white 13’ TV in my family kitchen counter. I couldn’t miss this live event I had just graduated high school that passed June. My brothers were metal heads and they watched live aid for those bands. But we all gathered to watch the Queen Set in the kitchen. My 3 siblings and I participated in singing We are the champions together out load. We sang with the crowd in California while watching this live, an experience I have never and will never forget. .
The rest of the band didn't think Freddie should do the call/response because it wasn't a Queen audience and it might not work! I think we can safely say it worked!!! I agree, it was at that moment, Freddie knew he had that crowd in the palm of his hand.
He took two shots of vodka and went on......there were 72,000 people there . But there were a stadium full of people in Philadelphia and a total of two billion people all over the world!
NO ONE could have thousands of fans eating out of his hands as Freddie did!! Best FRONTMAN EVER to be and NEVER will there be another voice like his!! Tell me a rock star that could cross over to opera and pull it off?! Freddie is a LEGEND and without him there would of never been QUEEN.
That emotion you felt at the end was how we all felt on the night whether you were there or watching it live on tv, I’ll never forget it and tears were running down my face
I watched it with my husband on the TV. We already knew and loved Queen. The sound wasn't good for most of the other bands and some of them didn't give it enough attention. Queen smashed it because they were a hard-working band who took it seriously. IMHO.
There is actually one more Queen song from this concert. Queen's regular set happened in late afternoon, but around 7pm the sound engineers were having issues (a recurring problem throughout the day) and needed someone to perform a song between acts to keep the crowd happy while the issue was worked out. So Freddie and Brian went out and did an acoustic version of 'Is This the World We Created'. (I believe they had rehearsed this one, just in case. Smart cookies!) It was off their most recent album 'The Works', but fit the occasion so perfectly, it could have been written just for Live Aid. ruclips.net/video/riwDo7_GxjM/видео.html
Because it was the summer in England, Queen played from 6:40pm until 7:00pm and it was still light. Freddie and Brian came back before Paul McCartney during the finale of the show at about 9:30pm

As others have pointed out here, Queen wasn’t even on the program for Live Aid that day, they were a “last minute” addition. So the vast majority of the audience had bought their tickets, unaware that Queen would even appear that day. And yet the band saw this show as a “make or break” moment for them to continue on together. They rented a theater in London and rehearsed every moment of their 20 minute set for 2 solid weeks, until they were sharp as a knife. And they quite literally stole the show out from under the entire bill. Elton is said to have been the first to wildly congratulate them after they came off the stage.
