The watermelon juice/vodka liquid is good for shots, you can collect excess by making a hole in the bottom of the melon before you slice it and drain the liquid that runs off into a container.

my friend and i are having a party on friday and are making this. but instead of using vodka we are going to use a carribean twist cocktail thing since we are making vodka gummy bears and vodka is damn expensive lol
I would do this a bit different, I would cut up some watermelon pieces and out it in a mason jar and pour the vodka in it and let it sit for 30 days in a dark cool place.....strain the fruit out, put in the ice box, serve chilled and enjoy

Well your answer to your question really depends on which brand of whiskey or vodka you choose if you are going for a good taste. The cheap are not usually the best of course.
You say you tasted Smirnoff, thats quite an undefined explanation because Smirnoff got like + 20 different tastes and mixes :)
But there is a big difference between vodka and whiskey, whiskey is usual more spicy and the vodka (the better ones) got a pinch of juniper berries.

What you want to do is cut the watermelon in half, scoop all the fruit out, cut it up into small pieces, cover the bottom of the hollow shell with food grade dry ice, return the fruit, and then pour the vodka on top. You can also carve a zigzag pattern into the rim of the "bowl" for better presentation.

Try a silver rum (white rum) it tastes much better than vodka.
But try Reigncane vodka that is made from sugar cane just like rum and get the best of both worlds!

I used to do something similar but with Korean Soju. Yummy. and instead of slicing it, I'd take the pulpy part out and basically blend it along with ice cubes to create a watermelon slushy that knocks you on your ass :)

i tried it already the sweetness stays but the vodka is very present so in a sense it does over power the watermelon taste if you are looking for a weak taste of vodka this is not for you

I’d say it was full of watermelon juice, I guess drain it over a bowl.
Smirnoff is hit... use a smaller bottle and choose stoly... good russian vodka is better if you don't want the vodka to overpower the watermelon or use a top shelf vodka if you want to avoid the rubbing alcohol taste, but imo it would be a waste of good vodka.
