  • Willa Cather was an intensely private individual. She often destroyed her old drafts, personal papers and letters. When she died, her will stipulated that Edith Lewis destroy her nearly completed novel, Avignon, and restricted the ability of scholars to quote from the personal papers that remained. While attending the University of Nebraska, she sometimes wore men's clothing and used the nickname "William." Her primary relationships were with women, and she lived with the editor Edith Lewis from 1912 until her death in 1947. Enjoy!

A Willa Cather fan, it was a treat to hear such a lovely story read aloud by such a good narrator. I’m fast becoming a Not Your Mother’s Storytime addict! Love the beautiful music at the end of each story, too. Thank you!

“And then, because the picture making mechanism was crushed, all the disturbing images faded to black”. I’ll
Forever remember the final lines from this short story. Read this in 1993 in Ms Callens literature class.

thanks v much for this ... I think Willa Cather is riffing on so many themes which ripple out for me and that we know only what we are 'told' ...

I agree! I feel the desire for beauty and elegance in my life. Could it be a basic human need?

The huge number of ads destroy the story, particularly since the volume was so much higher than the story itself. I will listen to it someplace else, and I understand that you're just making money from this but it really ruined a good good story.

I'm so sorry! It's not supposed to interrupt the story with ads, only at the beginning and end. I'll check the settings. You can also listen ad-free on my website: notyourmothersstorytime.com/
