      Fr, I was quite confused watching this. The mapo tofu and peking duck didnt seem like it was cooked well too, and I wouldnt expect the chicken feet to be made in that sauce. There are more things that are off like fried squid not being what I would consider as authentic chinese food in the first place. Regardless, I’ll just not name every single thing that is wrong here 😢

    • @montvna

      I feel Americanized Chinese food as been around long enough that it should be classified as a regional variety/style of authentic chinese cuisine. The style strongly extends its roots from Southern China, mainly the Guang Dong province. I feel this video isn't even the best representation of the true American style chinese food, where is the ginger beef or the general tao chicken, or the egg rolls lol. I do recognize that some of the dishes presented may not be the best representations, however I do question your claim regarding the authenticity of the food. I view it as a bit overblown and extending into cultural food purism.
      My take on each dish:
      - really simple, hard to mess this up
      - needs a bit of corn starch to thicken the sauce up, and maybe a bit less oil otherwise it looks ok
      - not a fan, but I see most dim sum places, if not all serving it up like this
      - its just broth, egg, starch and veggies
      - I do question the authenticity of this one though based on it being the most intensive of all the dishes to make, it definitely requires experience and the right equipment to do it well. Typically, in the seafood/banquet style restaurants, the duck thinly sliced taking off mostly skin, which then is served with thin crepes, rather than baos. The unused parts of the duck are then prepared into additional dishes like, duck meat & lettuce wraps, or duck soup.
      - i dont eat this often or at all, but remember it being saucier and spicier looking , kind of more like the mapo tofu
      - they look fine honestly, but serving them in the aluminum containers is a bit odd to me though, and the packet of sauce is a bit suss. throw them into a bamboo steamer boom authentic lol.
      - looks pretty good to me, i order this every time whenever at dimsum
      - i also get these every time at dimsum 🤤i do prefer the salted egg yolk custard buns over these ones though

    • @airy8509
      @airy8509 8 месяцев назад +25

      @@montvna I don't think your first statement is fair. At the end of the day, Americanised chinese cuisine is fusion food at most. Saying that because a fusion food existed for a long time, hence it can be called an authentic Chinese dish hardly make sense. Afterall, it is not like America is in China, so it cannot be called a regional cuisine either.

    • @kevwwong
      @kevwwong 8 месяцев назад +5

      The congee, chicken feet and custard buns are dim sum staples. The congee looked legit. Chicken feet likewise, but the description makes me think that the sauce might be off? Custard bun seemed fine. Kudos to whoever made it look like a pig.
      The fried squid is something that you might find in a HK dai pai dong. So it might be a regional quick service dish that never sees the light of day north of the border?
      Xiaolongbao, I don't think soup-filled is the original version, but it is one that may have been popularized by the Taiwanese Din Tai Fung chain. Should be served with some black or red vinegar though. And they should've told the first lady not to eat it whole like that. If the soup is still hot that "explosion" would not be fun.
      Peking duck, I'm more used to seeing a version with a crepe as opposed to bao. Probably fine in terms of giving the ladies an idea of what it is.
      Kind of disappointed the ladies didn't get some roast pork. Would've been good to see how they compared the crispiness and crunch of the skin to chicharrons.

    • @MrGavintron
      @MrGavintron 8 месяцев назад +12

      Yeah, no. American Chinese food can stand as its own thing, much like Korean or Indian Chinese food, but it cannot be classed with regional Chinese styles. That'd be like calling Chicago style pizza "Italian".
      As a Beijinger, I'll just point out the Peking duck is very far from authentic and is in the Cantonese style. Just visually, proper Peking duck is eaten with steamed "crepes" and the meat is sliced very thin. The steamed bun shown is , at best, a very recent variation.

  • @saradang5802

    • @MadCatAttack123
      @MadCatAttack123 8 месяцев назад +3

      I'd say it was good effort but they really miss the mark with a few dishes. As someone from Beijing, the duck dish is always served with a paper-thin steamed flour wrapper (not a bao) along with sliced spring onion and a sweet fermented flour paste sauce (just enough to coat your chopsticks, don't overdo the sauce). The bao version is probably a southern interpretation. It's not atrocious or anything but it's like taking a deep dish pizza and claiming it's the authentic New York pizza. NYers won't like that lol.

    Seriously you choose those dishes? There are a lot of delicious chinese dishes to try if you are a 1st timer. I’m a filipino but I love chinese food. You must research best chinese food before introducing it to your countrymen. I love noodle soups, fried rice, stir fry noodles, spring rolls, siopao, steamed fish and chinese dimsums are the best.

      Nah I’d have similar reactions. It’s not on purpose but not every cuisine is for everyone, they gave it a chance as best they could and that’s all you can really do.

      @@pinkroses9320 then you are racist, as simple as that. I don't have those kind of exagerated reactions, I usually just say is not for me: turtles, iguana, guinea pig, monkey, bull testicles, blood in intestines, all that and more is eaten in several countries in Latin America. It is not common but we don't make a big fuzz about it but chicken feet is such a big issue when they literally eat pig feet without problem. Don't confuse personal taste with reactions rooted in racism.

    I knew a Mexican guy who worked at a well known Chinese restaurant. One of their best dishes was Hunan pork stir-fry in a spicy savory black bean sauce. That place closed down and years later I found him operating a taco truck. We both reminisced how great that dish was. I suggested he recreate it and put it in a burrito. He thought it was a pretty good idea but I don’t know if traditionalist would go for it.

      Americanized Chinese food is for Americans who can’t appreciate Chinese cuisines. I hope people would be able to explore the Chinese culinary culture and have the opportunities to try the authentic Chinese food. Kudos to Anthony Bourdain for documenting all that in his food documentaries “parts unknown” and “no reservation”.
