Cheers mate, I think the hardtop on the early Spitfire's really suits them, but what with the weather at the moment, it makes the car a bit more usable 👍
Things to make an old classic reliable - No. 1 Replace the points with and electronic ignition kit ! Even when new the first thing you checked (after the petrol and temperature gauge) when you broke down was the points as the most likely cause of failure and nine times out of ten you were right .
This is very true, Spitfire's can be a funny one with this, the Mk3 doesn't have a ballast, but then others in the Spitfire range do, so it's a very good point to note 👍
Yeah, it's dead easy to do, and very much fit and forget. I still runs points on my TR6, and don't ever want to change that from points. So really I like both systems 👍
I used an Accuspark electric, got the whole distributor with electrics installed, they have the Lucas and the Delco distributors for the Spitfire. I got it for around $100 including shipping from England. I'm surprised you didn't use them since you live in the same country. I got the whole distributor with electrics for less money than the just the Pertronix electronic ignition kit.
@@SteveDentonClassics Thanks for getting back. I have a 1967 12/50. The points are knackered and I have purchased a new electronic system. There seems to be more to fitting them than I first thought.. any chance of talking me through the fitting stage on what's app video?
Hi sir, I am Zack from California and I have a Triumph a 67 model the spitfire 4 mk2. My engine is an 1100 cc engine. My question is would it be possible to mate my original transmission to the 1300 cc or the 1500 cc variant of this engine? Thanks!
In a word yes, you can mount any Triumph Spitfire engine to any Triumph Spitfire gearbox, the only real issues you’ll have are 1500 gearboxes need a different clutch plate, but with what your suggesting, just use the clutch you have on your current engine. Then the other thing is, your current gearbox will be a 3 rail, there not as strong as a single rail, fitted to the 1500s but they are still interchangeable with what you are doing
I did a video on converting the MGB to Petronix ignition system (link below), it's well worth it on an MGB, due to the placement of the distributor. Once it's fitted and set up, no more messing about with point in the MGBs tight engine space 👍 ruclips.net/video/dTLs-n8zaAg/видео.html
Cheers mate, it's a genuine factory hardtop. I've had it for about a year now. If your looking for one, just keep your eyes on eBay, the do crop up every now and then 👍
I’m a big fan of the Pertronix ignition...the only thing you have to be really cautious about is leaving the key on without the engine running...that will fry it pretty quickly.
I think Petronix is excellent, and very decrease as an ignition system. But yes your right, just have to be careful and remember to disconnect the Petronix when testing the electrics on the car 👍
Good morning master . Was that a duck l could hear at the start of the video ?😁😁 (probably engine related !) Well you made that look so easy even l could manage it ! And the "Spitfire " is looking in fine fettle. Certainly better than the GT6 which must be very close to running . Always good to see you and hope all is well . Take care and stay safe.
Hi Steve, another great video. I'm looking at some fairly sizable parts orders for my spitfire, I've been looking at Rimmer brothers but note you use Moss Europe a lot. Do you have a particular preference / recommendation?
Hi James, I tend to use Moss Europe, TRGB and David Manners Group for most of my part as the parts quality and service is very good from them. However with early Spitfires their are certain parts that you will only find from other suppliers such as James Paddock or Rimmer Bros 👍
Excellent video, Steve! It is a great help to see you doing each step on a Spitfire MK3. I also have a MK3, and I want to start the car after few years in storage. Is Pertronix Ignitor II Electronic Ignition ref#91149 the right part for 1968 MK3? Moss might have a different internal reference, 91149 is the Manufacturer reference from Pertronix referenced here: vintageperformance.com/retrorockets/triumph.htm.
@@SteveDentonClassics Many thanks, I ordered the correct part then :-) I will be trying to get my MK3 running again once I go on vacation where the car is stored.
Just wanted to let you know that thanks to your video, I could get my MK3 firing up. I fitted back the traditional ignition and get it started this way first. Then I moved to Pertronix. It was good to take my kids for a spin this summer! 😎
Your videos give us ‘weekend warriors’ the confidence to do this stuff. It’s really appreciated, Steve!
You're welcome mate, glade my videos are of some help to you 👍
Such a pretty car the early Spitfire, especially with the curvy hard-top...... need one in my life!!! Great vid 👍
Cheers mate, I love it. Easy cars to work on, and drive like go karts for the road 👍
good morning steve. nice job. best regards from germany (Eifel). be care
Cheers mate 👍
Good job, always worth bringing classic cars up to spec to cope with modern day driving conditions, while retaining the original look.
That's what I love about the Petronix Electronic Ignition system, it's very desecrate 👍
Nice one Steve enjoyed the video. Also like the hardtop on the Spit

It's one less thing to worry about, its the way I look at it 👍
just a note that the ignition module wants 12V all the time, so bypass the ballast circuit if you have one.
This is very true, Spitfire's can be a funny one with this, the Mk3 doesn't have a ballast, but then others in the Spitfire range do, so it's a very good point to note 👍
A good no nonsense video. Thank you.
You're welcome, glade you enjoyed watching 👍
Great job Steve, definitely a nice easy upgrade. Been running one on my 6 since I had her, works really well and looks very tidy.
Cheers Andy, that's my thoughts too, the Petronix is neat and tidy, and doesn't look out of place when you pop the bonnet 👍
Great video. At first I thought the car had stalled, had to rewind and noticed you turned the ignition off 🤣
Haha, yeah it's all about the detail 👍
Oh...and getting close to 2000 subscribers!
I know, I can't believe it, I never thought my YouTubing would ever grow this well and am just so grateful for everyone who has supported me with it 👍
I didn’t realize just how simple it is to upgrade to electronic ignition. Not that I’ve had a need for 30 years or so.
Thanks. Well presented.

Hi Steve, nice video. Does thos Petronix ignition system require the replacement of the coil? Are there any specification requirements for the coil ?
So long as you run it with a decent coil, it’ll be fine. Mines running with a Lucas Sports coil and it works very well 👍
Keep them coming 👍
Will does 👍

Part numbers? Pease?
The parts are in the discretion, it’s a Pertronix Ignitor 2 for a Mk3 Spitfire 👍
