Very true. Here where I am the green tree frogs hang out in them and keep the mosquitoes and larva to a minimum inside the plant. But definitely something to watch for before bringing the plant inside.
Thanks Laura. Perfect timing of your video. I will be moving to a senior living facility and I will not have as much daylight as I have now. I will need lower light plants. Love the succulents. Thank you for all your information and inspiring us to do 'indoor' gardening.
Thank you, Lark's Garden. I will be creating a succulent arrangement for a friend in a senior living facility this weekend! What a great idea. You just inspired me! You are so right. My friend has practically no outdoor light in her unit. Really, really great idea.
So glad to see African violets making a comeback! They're one of my faves and bloom so frequently I can't understand why they've flown under the radar so long. So many miniature and variegated varieties popping up...everyone should have them. Such sweet little plants.
Lisa Snider you’d love them. The leaves & blooms hang over the sides of the pot. I love the mini trailers. So dainty & fun. I’ve had some good luck with mine from Violet Barn. Here’s a link to some pictures of some trailers. I need new one! Don’t currently have any trailers. www.google.com/search?rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS699US699&sxsrf=ACYBGNRwIAJOw9UhfZFeBUvpM4SKYV4Idw:1578156642863&q=trailing+african+violet&tbm=isch&source=univ&hl=en-US&fir=egWepSb11QoWXM%253A%252Cnc3Twn16jcO_tM%252C_%253BU-ZVc_PlUyOnUM%253A%252CzrztyVnFX6QkFM%252C_%253B8IPuelha62esxM%253A%252CSShZcFJCn0rcUM%252C_%253Bv3R0nrCzSI0y1M%253A%252Cs39xDDUkJirQfM%252C_%253BJ67mLEdlK1isvM%253A%252CCN_3rf5Tph2mPM%252C_%253BMLghJe_sTbGywM%253A%252C3GXXhjeXESosXM%252C_%253BT3y2hvGJ3sbXtM%253A%252C3GXXhjeXESosXM%252C_%253BuZjvJssejqQSBM%253A%252CWGEduLSs4skSvM%252C_&usg=AI4_-kRGmQMBNoZazEgXhGM8hoPZEQGxkQ&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwifw-PQs-rmAhXDjVkKHagrAAsQ7Al6BAgEEDQ&biw=375&bih=551&dpr=2#imgrc=vZ0EyIh7_RrNNM
I love that you’re still loving on that bromeliad mother! Giving her a good life after all the nurturing she does for her babies. I think you’ve caused me to want to go buy this plant for all of its poignant meaning. 😅💚
a tip my granny gave me years ago: put an empty pot of the same size as your original one in your new container, fill potting mix around and slightly push it down, remove the plastic pot and just slide down the plant into the hole- very helpful for delicate and/or hanging plants where it‘s tricky to fill soil around
Laura did that in one of her older videos...maybe the one on African violet care? For people like me, who can never get just the right amount of soil in the pot, it makes planting go a little bit smoother!
Wow everytime you post a video my heart beat just spikes. I am so happy to see you so excited because of the mild winter. Love you and Aaron and Benjamin and Cheddar and Russell!!!❤❤❤❤Happy Winter
Nice to see your videos its a breath of fresh air compared to where I am now. We in Australia are currently experience chaotic fires all over the country hoping for rain to end these fires.
Yay! A longer houseplant video on my day off! I haven't even started the video yet, but I wonder how much I'm going to end up spending at the garden center after all this inspiration 😂🤣
I watched this video twice because I found myself looking at what you had in your greenhouse! Can you do a tour of your greenhouse? What are you growing in all those proven winners pots? I’m so interested.
Mel I was just thinking of using window screen because it would not break down like the coffee filters. I grow orchids and use pots with holes for air flow. Of course some the bark flows out when I water. A screen would put a stop to it. Have to get some and give it a try.
Yayyy...houseplant care! Been waiting for this video! I especially appreciated the info on bromiliads. I had one years ago and killed it by watering the tank too much so it rotted. Want to try it again so am doing a lot more research this time around. 💚🌿
Great information! Question about the Bromelaid, you water inside the plant after you remove the flower. How do you water while it’s flowering and does the pup require separate watering? Also, do you tip the plant on its side to remove old water or use a syringe? So curious about this plant!
I water mine inside the plant before and after the flowering. Actually I let mine pup out and all the plants get water. I'm in Florida so I just move them outside when they get too big for the container and the rain does everything for me.
Now I feel inspired to go buy more house plants! 😍 Would love to see these plants in their final homes and how you incorporate them into your decor. Thank you for another great video!
I have had a dracaena for almost 28 years. It gets too tall and I cut the top off and plant it and a new one emerges from the stump left behind on the original plant.
Monty Don presses the pot into the soil of the bigger pot so it has imprint so you can remove old pot and it fits perfect into the new one. Just an idea.
Love your videos! I’m so inspired! A question regarding water-do you use water straight from the faucet to water your plants? Our water is pretty heavily chlorinated and I’ve noticed that some plants will turn brown at the tips of the leaves. I try to leave a pitcher of water out on my kitchen counter for a day or two so that the chlorine dissipates. Is there a better alternative?
Call your local water provider--one of our mater gardeners is a chemist. There are different ways different affitives (processes) are done on water in a plant facilities. Letting my watering water sit for "till my next watering." Makes me feel like I am helping, so, it is worth the effort of doing it.
A Brita filter is a good option. A lot of water treatment facilities actually use chloramine, not chlorine, because it doesn’t breakdown and evaporate as easily as chlorine. It smells like chlorine, so the only way to know what you have in your tap water would be to call and ask. If your water is treated with chloramine, you probably need to filter it before watering certain plants with it. Anything that is sensitive to chlorine may be affected by chloramine, even if you let the water sit out for a few days before using it.
Also, I know there are tons of guides out there, but orchids drive me crazy. Getting the watering right is a struggle so if you could do a guide on just those plants (small and big), I would be so grateful!!
I’d love to see a tour of what you are overwintering in your cold frame. I know you think some of them probably don’t look nice, but it is winter and we all expect that. It would just be really fun to see all the random selections you have left over in that fun space.
Gorgeous new plants Laura! It's been 80° F here in Central Florida this past week. It's been such a weird season so far. Thanks for sharing their beauty with us! I love dracaena's. I have a Warneckii and a Janet Craig, the Janet Craig compactica is getting to be about 3 1/2 ft now.
I work in a nursery/gift shop, and I always know when a customer has watched your episodes. They come seeking what your show was about. You have a huge following! I am always excited to watch every episode you and your husband makes. Thank you!!
Oh my gosh! I inherited a plant when my Mom passed away and now I know it’s a different variety of a bromeliad. Thank you 😊 I wondered why so much of it was dying and yet other parts were new. Has a flower blooming now and then will repot. Awesome!
OMG just bought 4 African violets, schefflera (did not know the name), 2 small figs, and 3 draceana varieties.......this was the perfect care guide. Thank you for all the helpful information Laura ......the quilted gray pots are absolutely gorgeous!🌷🌱❤️😊👏👏👏
I really like this video on the house plants. I also noticed that you have the crescent garden self watering plants filled with soil☺. Anxious are we!? I can't wait for your next project with those. Hurry up spring!
I have the same bromeliad!! I love it! I can say it takes years for the pup to form a bloom stock. They only bloom once the pup has become mature. I think mine has bloomed once in 4-5 years after I first bought it.
Hi Laura ! String of Pearls is my favorite plant. Just love them. I can't say I've ever really figured out the water needs, but very little seems best. I have been wanting a Fiddle Leaf Fig for a long time, but you are right, they are not cheap !!
Great video! String of Pearls is one of my favorite houseplants. I just received a variegated variety that I am so excited about. I’ve also grown African Violets for years!
wowsers!! i need more windows where i can put plants inside my house but in areas where my cat won't think it's a salad treat for her.. oy vey.. those are GORGEOUS... those violets - what a pop of spring for your kitchen!!! i love them all!! the bromelliad information was really good, too, i hadn't heard some of that before!!!
I LOVE your channel so much - would you consider doing a video on cat safe indoor plants?? Happy New Year!! Thanks for helping us see the natural beauty in life! 🌿🌺🌲🦚💐🌹🌻😊
Gah! I love that fiddle leaf fig 😍 I bought a very small one that I've kept alive for a little over a year. I think I'm going to need to treat myself to a larger one very soon!
I raised many African Violets for years in a 3 foot round clear plastic dome. It had it's own base and a small twist to open dial at the top. I had watered them moistly when they were all planted and put many in together. I think they love company and always flowered more inside this than the ones I had alone. Then I never watered again. I opened the dial when it was filled with droplets and closed it when it was clear. It lived so long that way and flowered continuously since I had so many varieties inside. I haven't seen those containers in years - during the sixties and seventies they were the rage. If you ever find a way to offer them, I think it would be a big seller. I wish I hadn't grown tired of it and given it away.
Yes, I agree that more plant specific care guides is a great idea! I also wondered, since you mentioned having your dracaena for 11 years, if you have any heirloom, pass-along plants from any family members. I have some white iris that my mother got from my grandmother (father's mother), and now have gifted some to my daughter for her her first household. I love the idea of family members enjoying the same plant that has been propagated from generation to generation. Interested in what may be growing in Benjamin's garden when the time comes! :D
Beautiful plants! I don't have a lot of light in this new home. But I'm looking for something which can take this lower light. BTW, my Amaryllis bulbs are finally starting to bloom. It's exciting!
I loved the pots you chose for each plant and that string of pearls is so full and juicy. I need to start looking at African violets because I always bypass them. Have a blessed new year🎊🎉😘❤.
Hi Laura! Oh my, you "hauled" some beautiful plants! I need to try a String of Pearls again, now that I know more about them ~ thank you and others for advice. I found an African Violet that had lime green flowers and was so thrilled because that is one of my favorite colors. It's finished blooming, and I can't wait for it to bloom again. You are so right about Dracaena's. They are so forgiving. I love all of mine! I have a small Janet Craig that I can't wait for it to get the tree like stem. I love the look! I have a variegated Schefflera and really like it. I love the Bromeliad! I bought a small variety a few months ago that had a bright pink flat flower on it. I think it is a Cyanea "Pink Quill". The flower faded, but is still there! I love your new pots and the cement pots. This was a fun video as I love houseplants! Your folks have some beautiful houseplants. I bought a few last Spring and plan on going back this year for more, and some more pots and some more outdoor plants. Thank you so much for sharing this!
I've had that same type of bromeliad post-flower for almost 2 years now. She just keeps having babies! She's put out 5 pups so far. I let them get big enough to be viable, and then remove and repot them, and shortly after, a new pup or two will emerge. And the mother has stayed beautiful and vibrant and fairly plump the whole time. I do miss that gorgeous pale pink flower spike, though. Can't wait until her babies are big enough to produce their own.
I am still putting Christmas away but after that task is complete I am going to do an inventory on my houseplants & possibly get more!! You have inspired me!! 🥰🌱💚🌿☺️
Wow, another plant to put indoors. It's interesting plants specially the small round succulent in hanging basket. Thank you for this showing this beautiful pl t ideas.
Hi Laura! Love Plants and the Fiddle leaf, after dusting the leaves, if you mix 1 TBLS or more of Mayonnaise with 1/2 cup of bottled water you can use a soft cloth to shine up the leaves and I believe it's nutritious...olive oil is also good, thank you for your videos - Garden Answer Fan California
Fiddle leaf figs are so popular right now! I know you did a video for them several years ago, I wonder if you could do a new one for what you've learned so I don't kill this beautiful plant. More care guides would be a great idea, and it might increase new traffic to your channel. What a lovely video, thanks Laura!
What I do for African violets is to make sure the leaves don’t touch the container (especially clay for some reason). When they do hit the container, the leaf tends to die off; I then pinch or cut it off. If blooms slow down, in addition to fertilizing, I may remove some outside leaves and overly clustered center leaves to promote flowering and air circulation. On the bromeliad, I forced blooming with the plant and apple (produces methane gas) in a plastic for about a week.
Yes! Please update the fiddle care guide as I've had one before and made all of the rookie mistakes! Now that I've seen your 2 lush fiddles I wanna try again but am too scared without your knowledge and expertise. Love from Australia!
Love the care guides really helps! I have a Fiddle Leaf Fig tree. It is a clump form that is a little over 6' tall. I keep it in bright indirect light, no direct sun. But I have grown them in some morning direct sun and have noticed faster growth for filling in, and in darker spots tends to be more open and less dense, but still thrives. I also water mine about once per week. 🌿
I believe winter is a little slower growing time, even for house plants, so yes, spring is the time to start fertilizing, or fertilizing more. This may of course depend on where you live and how much sunlight you get year round. Many of my winter days are more overcast so much less sun.
A lot of plant collectors just give individual doses of fertilizer with watering, rather than putting slow release fertilizer in the soil. Doing individual doses allows you to control when your plant is fertilized and how much you give it each time. It also allows you to change up which fertilizer your plant is getting, if it needs something different. Plants need more fertilizer when they’re growing heavily, and little to none when they’re not as active. Fertilizer can damage your plants...and if you run into problems, it’s a lot easier to simply flush the soil (to remove traces of liquid fert.), than it is to completely repot/get rid of the slow release granules.
Laura, would you consider doing a demonstration of removing the pup from the mother plant? I have a whale fin sansevieria that produced its first pup two years ago, and now that pup is having its own pup! Things are getting a little crowded in the pot and I'd like to separate them before the plants start getting leggy. I'm terrified! Please help!
You dont need to be nervous, sansiveria are extremely resilient. Just remove the plant from its pot and you should be able to separate the pups with your hands. Then just repot!
I also have a whale fin, but I just leave the pups. I would rather have 1 large plant instead of a lot of little ones. when it got crowed I repotted it into a larger pot.
I would love to see your video about the care of a fiddleleaf fig. Mine looks long and leggy. Most of the bottom leaves have fallen off. This plant needs help!
Gorgeous plants! I notice that you don't use any perlite for drainage..just the soils. I love the fiddlehead fig and bromiliad, especially. I love your videos and your garden design abilities and gorgeous gardens. It's very informative and fun. Keep us updated on your houseplants and the progress. Thank you! :)
I’d love to see where these are placed in your home as far as light to get a feel for placement in my own home. I don’t have a lot of bright light because of a lot of big trees outside so am reluctant to try as my plants generally don’t do well.
AN EXCEPTIONAL VIDEO LAURA AND AARON. I thank you for sharing your knowledge on these plants, it was so helpful. I would love to see more. I have always loved houseplants but I've had to cut down on the amount because one of my cats likes to chew on them, he's such a brat, LOL!!! Happy new year to you and your family. I look forward to another year of your videos. GOD bless you.
I would love to see a "house plant tour" where you take us around and show us all of your house plant collection, like you do with your yard.
I would love that, too!!
Yes would love this!
She did one a while ago but a new, updated one would be awesome

Fun fact about the bromeliads well. In the rainforest the well holds onto the water and allows the frogs to lay their eggs in there so they develop safely!
Just be careful mosquitoes love them for the same reason.

Yes!! More care guides please! (It actually doesn’t matter, you could film yourself watching paint dry and I’d probably watch it)
Rachel McKee, I so agree 🤣😂
Rachel McKee Right? Same 😂
I would too! 😁
Yup me too lol 😆.
Ditto Rachel...lol

I love African violets. Mine are starting to bloom and they are just gorgeous.
Kate Eggleston love my minis and trailing African violets!!
I like to see she didn't use the African violet pots because they are hard to find
@@sharonmclaughlin2258 what is a trailing African violet :)
Lisa Snider you’d love them. The leaves & blooms hang over the sides of the pot. I love the mini trailers. So dainty & fun. I’ve had some good luck with mine from Violet Barn. “I needed one in every color.” I feel that 😂
Me to
I love that you’re still loving on that bromeliad mother! Giving her a good life after all the nurturing she does for her babies. I think you’ve caused me to want to go buy this plant for all of its poignant meaning. 😅💚
I agree! There was something so poetic about the way she described the life cycle of this plant -- an echo of our own human existence.

a tip my granny gave me years ago: put an empty pot of the same size as your original one in your new container, fill potting mix around and slightly push it down, remove the plastic pot and just slide down the plant into the hole- very helpful for delicate and/or hanging plants where it‘s tricky to fill soil around

I really enjoyed the end of the last houseplant video, where we got to see how and where you placed them. Would love to see that continue.

Nice to see your videos its a breath of fresh air compared to where I am now. We in Australia are currently experience chaotic fires all over the country hoping for rain to end these fires.
Stay safe sorry you're having such terrible fires
It's so terrible. ☹
It's so terrible!😢 Prayers for your beautiful land and all her people! 💕 COME ON RAIN!! 🌧
i live in zone 10b and we have a HUGE fiddle leaf fig, as big as your pines!!!
:o
Hey laura! Could you please do a house plant tour?😊
Great haul. Would love to see pictures of these plants in their final (indoor) destination. Care videos sound like a great idea. Happy New Year.
I loved this video!!! House plants are how I keep my sanity during the winter months!
Yay! A longer houseplant video on my day off! I haven't even started the video yet, but I wonder how much I'm going to end up spending at the garden center after all this inspiration 😂🤣
I was hoping you would plant the dracaena in one of the grey quilted pots. It would look like a 🍍. The bromeliad comes close, though. 😉
Makes me want to run out and get plants. That was such a fun video. Very informative. I especially loved the bromeliad.
I watched this video twice because I found myself looking at what you had in your greenhouse! Can you do a tour of your greenhouse? What are you growing in all those proven winners pots? I’m so interested.
I’d like to see a care guide on bromeliads. I haven’t found a good one on RUclips.
Try "Joy Us Garden" She has a channel and a blog and works with plants professionally. I love her input on houseplants
Try using a coffee filter to cover holes in pot works well.
Victoria Brown Frank this is what I do! Works like a charm and I always have them in hand anyways
Great idea. Thanks! I'm definitely trying that one.
I use a little piece of window screen to keep the soil from falling out and to keep the drainage open.
Another great idea, Mel.
Mel I was just thinking of using window screen because it would not break down like the coffee filters. I grow orchids and use pots with holes for air flow. Of course some the bark flows out when I water. A screen would put a stop to it. Have to get some and give it a try.

Love "haul" videos! Would really like to have seen where you placed each one... I'm such a visual person...I think it helps me to retain information.
I live in Florida and everything here is backwards. It’s funny how most of these are really common outdoors.
I live in Central Florida too! Your so right, our growing is a bit different than everyone else.
Same thing happening for us in southeast Georgia today. It should reach almost 80 degrees today....in January😩
Would you please post some pictures of these plants in their new location?
You mean you don't live in Buffalo!?
I know, I live in Miami and I have lots of Bromeliads including one exactly the same species, planted on the ground in the back yard.
Watching something green & growing this time of the year is lovely. Thanks Laura.
Monty Don presses the pot into the soil of the bigger pot so it has imprint so you can remove old pot and it fits perfect into the new one. Just an idea.
I've never really liked bromeliads, but that one is making me question my judgement. That silver foliage is beautiful!

So are plants in Zone 5to 6.

Can one use Bio-tone when repotting houseplants? or is that just an outdoor thing?
quilted ornaments to quilted pots...we continue the theme!!! love the selections, your enthusiasm keeps us in the garden center!
YAY! I love it when you cover houseplants! More please! I'm sick of winter and need more houseplant videos 😆🌴🌵💐

Loved the eulogy for the bromeliad mother plant. 😭
I was hoping you would show us where you planned to place them indoors. I was delighted to see the African Violets. They are so charming.

Next time, can you show us where you place these in your home? Your house is so beautiful, and it's nice to see the finished result.
I know what you mean about starting the New Year with new plants. I am waiting for my order from Planterina and can’t wait for the shipment to arrive!
🙌🙌🙌 what kind of plants did you order? The Hoyas Amanda sent out to us are gorgeous! I’m sure you’ll love whatever you have coming! 🌿
Garden Answer Calathea White Star, Anthurium Purple and Ctenanthe burle-marxii. I’ll share photos when I get them!
Hey Laura, the Bromeliad you have there is Aechmea fasciata. They grow brilliantly in bathroom and with ferns and orchids.
Ficou ótimo o replante, é um desafio pra muita gente cultivar esse colar de pérolas. Amei tudo!
I'd Love an update showing us where you end up keeping these plants! That's a big part of the fun of Houseplants plants for me!
Just got into houseplants last spring ,I am always doing yardwork so trying to expand my joy to inside the house as well🥰
I am still putting Christmas away but after that task is complete I am going to do an inventory on my houseplants & possibly get more!! You have inspired me!! 🥰🌱💚🌿☺️
Wow, another plant to put indoors. It's interesting plants specially the small round succulent in hanging basket. Thank you for this showing this beautiful pl t ideas.
Would love to see more on houseplants. You are always so informative, love your videos.
Thanks for sharing! I love gardening and plants and everything with it.its my hobby.love your videos!
My favorite is the deep purple African violet!! Very pretty
I love see all these plants!!! New Houseplants are so refreshing for January❤️ Especially that fiddle!!
Will you do more chicken videos? Like upkeeping, feeding, egg collecting...maybe like a short 5 minute chicken update?
Thank you! I learn something new from each of your videos.
I didn’t see you use any slow release fertilizer; do indoor plants not need it. Love the video! Thanks.
Good question
She said that she starts fertilizing in spring. It is not recommended to fertilize in the spring.
If you live in a humid climate you should cut commercial cactus mix with pumice or perlite too
Laura, would you consider doing a demonstration of removing the pup from the mother plant? I have a whale fin sansevieria that produced its first pup two years ago, and now that pup is having its own pup! Things are getting a little crowded in the pot and I'd like to separate them before the plants start getting leggy. I'm terrified! Please help!
You dont need to be nervous, sansiveria are extremely resilient. Just remove the plant from its pot and you should be able to separate the pups with your hands. Then just repot!
I also have a whale fin, but I just leave the pups. I would rather have 1 large plant instead of a lot of little ones. when it got crowed I repotted it into a larger pot.
@@flowergirl8887 I'm with you, rose! The like a nice full plant
Google " How to divide a sanseveria"
Can we please have a houseplant tour? That would be just the best!
I would love to see your video about the care of a fiddleleaf fig. Mine looks long and leggy. Most of the bottom leaves have fallen off. This plant needs help!
So Schefflera. That's what its called. They do get big. We use it as borders. Can be planted in shade or sun. Very very hardy.
You've given me the courage to try string of pearls and a fiddle leaf again! Thanks Laura!
I would love an updated video on care tips for the fiddle leaf fig!!💜
Beautiful plants. Great info. That fiddle leaf fig is my favorite.
They are all beautiful! Another great video!
I can’t wait for spring...!
Happy New Year! Love houseplants. They get me through the winter. Great video. Thank you.
What beautiful plants and some that are totally new to me!!! I'm so excited to go shopping now :)
I just planted about 150 tulip bulbs in pots and 100 daffodil bulbs for my porch.
I so enjoy your videos, can’t wait until spring
Another EXCELLENT video! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing beautiful house plants.
You should definitely try to propagate your Fiddle Leaf Fig when you trim it back! That would be a great video!!
I’m planning on it! 👍
Garden Answer awesome! Looking forward to it! 🥳
Laura will you show us where you put these plants in your house? It would help understand what is direct and indirect.
