  • Its newly expanded capacity was 9,000 cars per day, the largest in the United States, surpassing Enola Yard. Conway was rebuilt with both eastbound and westbound hump classification yards, and a total of 99 classification tracks, at a cost of about $35 million, according to a 1957 PRR publication.
Stretching nearly four miles along the Ohio River shore, the Conway Automatic Classification Rail yard looks, in an aerial view, like a pair of forks with interlaced tines. An average of 6,000 freight cars coming from east or west are sorted here onto 107 separate tracks for destinations from St. Louis to Montreal. With 181 miles of track, the yard is one of only five or six this size in the United States.
Upon entering, a long freight train is pushed to the top of a slight hill called “the hump,” then each car is separated by hand when one of the crew pulls the coupling. The cars roll down the hump to the designated track, which is opened by an electronic switch. The buildings reflect the yard's evolution from a railyard for the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago line in the 1880s to a freight classification yard for the Pennsylvania Railroad after the turn of the twentieth century. The latter built the roundhouse in 1910, northwest of the administration building. Its timber construction is visible on the interior, though the building has been altered over the years. In the early twenty-first century, it had eight tracks and enough workers to sand (for traction), refuel, and repair an average of eleven locomotives per day. Nearby, the carpenter shop, formerly the administration building, is of red brick and has round-arched windows that are still visible through many coats of ruddy paint.
More tracks were added to the site over the years, and a renovation of the site in 1956 added five yellow-orange brick buildings dotted across the acreage. The three-story administration building, the largest structure, lies in the center of all the activity, and its five-story tower offers a view of the entire yard. This building initially housed train crews, who were fed and entertained by the YMCA under contract to the railroad. The former sleeping quarters now house training classrooms and an engine simulator. Similar but smaller buildings lie at both the east and west entrances of the yard and adjacent to each hump. They are simple brick buildings with metal-framed, green-tinted windows slanting in at the base to reduce reflections in the towers. Their interiors are finished with enameled tile and linoleum.

Conway yards in Conway Pennsylvania is not the largest rail yard or classification yard in the United States that's on the Union Pacific line it's up towards Nevada to come out mistaken it's the world's largest rail yard it's probably three times the size of Conway and handle probably a lot more freight coming in a lot of freight comes out of California and Nevada that part of the country over to this side so they need a big yard and I think Burlington and if you're going to go by push button railroad well there's one in Germany that's slightly bigger at one time Conway was the world's largest push button railroad but not anymore actually they used to have four guys in the towers now they only have two one working the east side one working the west side and get a few guys to replace my computer and they handled retarders going down the hill at the hump yard. The reason I know so much is I'm from the area and I used to drive throughout the cruise around for it cut me out of Cleveland Ohio we were legit..

Well Thank for all that great information but after a quick search looks like we are both wrong. Bailey Yard is the world’s largest railroad classification yard. Employees sort, service and repair locomotives and cars headed all across North America. Owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad (UP), Bailey Yard is located in North Platte, Nebraska. The yard is named after former Union Pacific president Edd H. Bailey.

@@RayNoneya look I enjoyed the video and it's cool and I didn't know that Union Pacific had the largest real classification yard I didn't remember which state it was in however Conway it is an important part of the rail system in this country they decide things that are going east and west as well as North to Boston and over to New York City and down to Baltimore they also are important provider of transportation for Cole going to Detroit Edison Detroit Edison has a 2-mi long train that the various railroads provide power for they've been going down the shower trail yard and Washington county.. that's where they take the cars down to the coal mine.. again I did enjoy the video I was surprised that you had no problem flying the drone over The rail yards that's cool.. across the river and aliquippa there is another classification yard it's all manually done though it's the CSX it was originally set up there to take care of steel as well as take things down to off the chemicals and what used to be Saint Joe LED and sink which became a CCA I mean they don't have any humps or anything there they just do everything manually..
