No matter what people may say about Fairytail today.... No one can argue that during it's hayday and till today its one of the greatest anime ever made. It's severely underrated today, but almost everyone was watching it and almost everyone(a true anime fan) has heard or seen this anime. It was literally always up there with the IG's like DBZ, One Peace, Naruto and Bleach. Granted it may not be entirety as good as them but it was and is one of the most popular anime out there.
