it is more of a traditional guard in his neutral stance but, this is what makes Sonny great in my opinion, is his versatility and diversity in his guard. As you pointed out he does often use a cross guard, and uses a shell too. It appears to be more situational rather than stylistic.

@@thanasides what is the guard called though how do i learn this? i havent done boxing yet, but i assume that the standard guard they teach in modern boxing isn't the same as this? right now i'm thinking of going with either the blackburn style crouch or this guard as a base

@@coachingconfidant2785 Traditional guard is rear hand tucked in front of the face, not necessarily on the cheek, as this allows parries of the jab. Lead hand is kept forward a bit, to allow quicker jabs, but not covering the abdomen like a shell. Best example I can think of is Joe Louis, who in my opinion perfected this stance.

@@coachingconfidant2785 Nowadays gyms advocate for a high guard most of the time with hands up covering the cheeks, but I’ve found this to be ineffective in my opinion. With this type of guard it gives you better eyesight, easier to parry jabs, easier for head movement, and hand placement makes it harder to telegraph if being unpredictable in your movements

@@thanasides yes Joe Louis style is called the Blackburn crouch. Are you referring to the pose stance? this is the stance, and guard i read in Charlie Goldman, and Rocky Marcianos book as he had a similar crouching style to Joe Louis where both hands were kept so that the elbows were at hip level to protect from bodyshots where the hands were just below the chin lead hand was slightly in front, head was to the right off the center line, and left shoulder hunched, and chin tucked in the dimple between your chest and shoulder
