- The Mitakon 65mm f/1.4 for Medium Format Digital Cameras like the Hasselblad 907x & X2D as well as the Fujifilm GFX system has been a favorite lens of mine for years. The field of view closely equates to a 50mm on full frame and gives a very similar look to the classic Contax 645 80mm f/2, Mamiya 645 80mm f/1.9, & Pentax 67 105mm f/2.4. All at a relatively affordable price compared to other medium format options out there.

Moral of the whole video: to make money on lenses and cameras, you need to save money on indoor heating :)
Haha it was 7°F outside and I came back from taking some samples. This little shed doesn’t have a thermostat either ;)
I was shocked at how good this lens was when I purchased it. Had low expectations, but it's earned a permanent spot in my bag :)
It’s such an incredible lens ! It cost 599$ but brought me 4-5 figures contracts and being published in NYC billboards. Such a great lens !!!!! I just love it. It gives you 4x5/8x10 look because of creamy bokeh and 3d pop. I wish they had option for 65mm 1.2 and 65mm 0.95 full coverage
what camera did you use?
Modded my Mitakon 65mm to have full stops. Not sure if it applies to every copy but there are grooves inside aperture ring on my Mitakon 65mm that correspond to full stops. Also was able to mod mine to reduce the minimum focus distance to 60cm.
!!!!!!
Please share how you did it. Is your mod fixes the issues of bokeh balls being cut towards edges ? My 65mm 1.4 has bokeh balls which are slightly cut. I suspect it’s because of rear element
Same reason I love the 90mm 1.25 by another manufacturer. These hyper fast lengths on bigger sensors produce super neat results.
TTartisan? Great lens!
I heard 90mm 1.25 isn’t great with 44x33 coverage
I was today years old when I realised my mitakon had a lens hood.
A great review, very much admire this lens! I am curious though, what is that beautiful body cap on the GFX in the background?
thank you very much for sharing ! waiting for more 907X 100C videos .....
Have two more already edited and in the pipeline with more to come :)
good to know about the faster 14bit mode
Is your studio not insulated? I actually dig the ascetic of the winter jacket, but it just accrued to me it’s probably for practical reasons.
Haha it was 7°F that day and I had just gotten back from shooting some test stuff and went straight into filming. I have a tiny little heater in there that I turn off while filming but decided to keep the jacket on because it was so cold.
@@benjhaisch Honestly, it was a cool look.. Gave the "I'm in a cabin someplace beautiful and cold" vibe.
Woahhh. Wtf? Finally! ❤
Wait you used it fir years am i the only one who's living under a humongous rock? 😂
Great ! I just bought this - Now what's the trick to use this on the Fuji 100s for someone who has never really manual focused subjects before ?
Some people find focus peaking to be helpful, but generally it’s just practicing with it a lot to get use to how it works. Plus when in doubt, front>back focus
non - clicked aperture ring is typically a cinema lens feature, perhaps that was the thinking behind that?
Probably not as I've found that the aperture control ring actually has grooves already cut out inside. For some reason, Mitakon didn't push through with putting a springloaded ball to provide the clicks stops. I ended up modifying mine by drilling a hole and placing a spring and steel ball inside to fit the grooves already on the inside of the aperture control ring. Mine stops at 1.4, 1.8 (I think), 2, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16.
Indeed 65mm equals to about 50mm on GFX sensor but as for aperture equivalence, it’s only about 1,2 if it were FF.
If it was 0,95 or 1 it would mean as well that 65mm would equal to 32,5mm as both focal length and aperture are correlated in this sensor equivalence. 🙂
stop down a little and the lens gets crispy if you dont want to stop down add a little extra shutter like x3 focal length of lens. focus with your feet and eyeball. i just notice the difference in color between a fuji lens and this one but it is unique and that makes it a very cool lens to have for the gfx.
Always love these videos! I just picked up a used X1Dii and LOOOOOOVE IT and it currently have the 45mm P and it's so great. I'm looking for another lens but don't want to spend 3500-4k on a 90mm or 65mm XCD lens. I'm looking at the Mitakon 65mm or the TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25. Have you had experience with this one too?
Like Benj said, the Hasselblad X platform relies on the leaf shutter built-in into the lenses. When using the Mitakon on an X1D, you have to use the electronic shutter. On the 100MP sensor in the X2D that works reasonable, but the 50MP in the X1D (and also the GFX50-line) has a very slow read-out. Unless your subject is really static, you’ll soon see rolling shutter in your images. Not an issue for landscape or portraits, but e.g. people walking in your image will soon show ‘elastic legs’.
I am curious to know how you feel this lens on either of those cameras compares to something like the voigtlander 50 1.0 on a full frame body?
Besides the form factor. What's main difference between the XC2D and the 907X & CFV 100C? Why would someone that wants to buy the XC2D change his mind and buy the 907X ?
Things that come to mind: The x2d has ibis, image stabilization. Also the implementation of a viewfinder vs just a rear screen. The 907x is definitely cool and fun to use. But I think the x2d is the more practical camera. But I would honestly love both.
Is it better to buy Hasselblad X2D 100C Medium Format Digital Camera Body or Hasselblad 907X 100C?
The X2D is objectively better. It has an amazing EVF and IBIS as well as an articulating screen that can give you a *similar* experience to the 907X, but the 907X really is just a beautiful little camera on its own. The X2D is more versatile on its own, but the 907X opens up more flexibility if you want to use legacy cameras like the 500 or 2000 series
Have you tried or have one of Hasselblad's own XCD lenses to compare this to?
I'm interested in your 1st vs 3rd party opinion for this system.
Yep! I’ve been using the 55/2.5V with the system as well. Big fan of the new V series lenses. Focus is snappy and they’re crazy sharp.
One day i'll put it on my 50R.
What sync speed do you get with this lens on the X2D ?
How cold is your office?
I came straight from filming some of those clips outside and it was 7°F. Still was trying to warm up ;)
I feel like a complete moron, but nowhere in the manuak for the 907x CFV100C do I find where I can set to shoot "without lens." The 65mm f1.4 Speedmaster show up as "no lens" and won't allow me to shoot. I understand that it must be set to shoot "without lens," but i cannot find how in the manual or searching through the available menu items. Help!
Setup the camera to use the electronic shutter. That will allow it to
Do you find the Hasselblad that much better then the GFX?
They’re very different really. Both have amazing sensors for sure. Very different experiences though.
what's the difference between this and using a Sony 50 1.2 on an A7R5?
Definitely has some more depth to it, but diminishing returns for sure ;)
Benj, sell a camera and buy yourself a heater for that room!
I bought it a few months ago when I was in New York City. It’s a beautiful lens, if only it had a leaf shutter, it would be perfect
I’d easily pay twice as much for the same lens with a leaf shutter
It might sound strange but I wish for plastic version of this lens.
My dude, do you have a heater in that room?
Heater, no AC ;)
But yeah. It was crazy cold that day and I came straight in from taking the sample photos
@@benjhaisch Haha yeah i was wondering why is this man in full winter gear inside this studio!
my focusring is broken because i screwed down that lenshood 🤦♂️ Now i must send it to Hong Kong from Germany 😢
Dude the song in this video was about to bring me to the throne of God 😂
Hahaha I’ll preach the gospel of 44x33
Next make a video explaining how to make the money to buy any of these cameras
Haha plenty of channels that do that, but yeah, I get it.
Hey man, "old" GFX cameras like 50s or 50r second hand are around 2k or even 1.5k if you're lucky...
With the prices of full frame cameras and semi profesional bodies these days I think is money but nothing crazy
Pd: hasselblad is out of discussion xD
Stop buying cameras and pay your heating bill so you don’t have to wear a coat indoors! 😂
Haha I’ll do what I want ;)
@@benjhaisch atta boy!
Can’t wait for your review of the new Fuji x100. I’m betting you got one.
I didn’t, but thanks!
Benjor Haischelblad
Can someone point me to an actuall review of this lens? This is the 8th video which I am skipping after getting through them and only getting some stupid elevator music and some stories ... I am two minuttes in this one and all I know that it is beautiful and dreamy... pffff
lol what do you actually want to know? It’s soft wide open, has limited aperture blades so bokeh gets wonky stopped down, aperture ring isn’t clicked, it’s heavy, throws a wide image circle, not sure what else.
