“Father Knows Best”
Father Knows Best, which began life as a radio series in 1949, evolved into a CBS television sitcom in 1954. Actor Robert Young (the only member of the original radio cast who continued his role on television) starred as Jim Anderson, an agent for the General Insurance Company, who lived with his wife, Margaret, and their three children. Jane Wyatt co-starred as Margaret Anderson, and their offspring-17-year-old Betty (called "Princess" by her father), 14-year-old Jim Jr. (or Bud), and Kathy, the baby of the family at age nine and fondly known as "Kitten" to her dad, were played by Elinor Donahue, Billy Gray, and Lauren Chapin respectively. The stories revolved around the various exploits of the Anderson family, whose problems were neatly solved in each 30-minute episode by listening to Father (and, by extension, Mother) and doing the right thing.

1.) Radio origins: The show began as a radio sitcom in 1949, and the original title ended with a question mark to suggest that the father's role as family leader was questionable.
2.) The Andersons' kitchen actually had working appliances. They were used to make coffee and pastries for cast and crew members when they reported for work in the mornings.
3.) The character 'Jim Anderson' was ranked #6 in TV Guide's list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time" (20 June 2004 issue).
4.) The Anderson house in "Father Knows Best" went on to appear as the home of Dennis's grouchy neighbor, Mr. Wilson, in the 1959 sitcom "Dennis the Menace", and later still, became the home of Tony Nelson in the 1960s sitcom "I Dream of Jeannie".
5.) When the series debuted in 1954, it did so poorly in the ratings that CBS canceled it in March of 1955. A flood of protests came from viewers insisting that the show be reinstated. It was moved to an earlier time, and gradually became a hit.
6.) The voice of the wife on the radio program was that of Wilma Flintstone.
