Hi Eugenie, thank you for sharing your experiences! I am currently a CS undergrad considering applying straight to a phd program, and your advice definitely inspires me to do the same thing. I look forward to seeing you continuing doing amazing works!
You are too precious! I am finishing my BS in CS and I am looking at grad school for next year. I finally found what makes me happy in regards to research. Finally… FINALLY… I know what to write on my SOP. Hallelujah 🙌
Hi Eugenie. I relate with you so much. Hopefully i get masters and then start pursue PHD too. Keep posting about your experience and interests . All The BEST!!!!!!
Hey, this is a highly relatable video! I am applying for a master's in US/Canada currently (because I have like 3.2 GPA and only 1 paper under review from a random college in India) with a plan to pursue a cs phd later. It looks to me like the most important thing you mentioned - not only for improving chances of admission to phd but even success in a research career - is having a problem space you are passionate to explore. Because if you have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. Making the distinction between method space and problem space seems crucial. Your video made me feel like we have a very similar thinking process : )
Thanks for sharing. I hope I could have know and plan as you did when I applied, I realize why it was hard for me to get in even one program though I was lucky. Didn’t get in eecs but now a course 1 phd, maybe can meet you one day. Ps the sop link is super helpful
Hi Eugene, While applying, did you have any publications? I have no publication but a submitted paper under review, 3 solid LORs and above average academic record. But I am concerned about having no publication.
Thank you so much for making this! I recently emailed a professor and I have gotten no replies and it has demotivated me a tiny bit. I think I'm gonna use this to make myself better and try again with a different professor because I don't wanna give up Wish me luck!
Thank you so much for your reply. But also I want to ask about the reference letters for many universities' applications. For example, suppose I ask a professor to give me a reference letter for a university. In that case, I don't know if I can use that same reference for another university since the reference letters are specifically addressed to each university. How do you manage with the reference letters to apply to many universities?
Thank you Eugine, for your wonderful video. I have a little question, were your letters of recommendation only from academics and researchers? or were some of them from people outside academia (like jobs)?
Hi, can you kindly review my SOP? Though we are from different discipline, your opinion will definitely help me to secure a PhD position in a top university.
Hi Eugenie, I am also in UBC and in a similar boat (undergrad eyeing a PHD economics). Do you recommend getting into graduate courses? I know they restrict those courses if your not a graduate student. Also, I noticed you have never taken higher level math courses, more specifically math 320. Did that ever come up in your interviews for PHD? Any thoughts on it?
Hi William! Great point! I think it depends on the field. In my field (i.e., CS systems), most of us don't usually use higher level math at work. That's why I didn't take 300+ level math. But from my impression, econ research can be heavy on math and stats. Have you talked to some professors about this?
@@beingeugenie I have and they did recommend higher math. But of course at the end of the day, research experience is probably more important. Anyways, Thank you for the inspiring videos. It motivated me to apply to a similar mentorship program for PHD Economics by MIT/Harvard. I am not sure what exactly they are looking for but hopefully they accept me. looking forward to more of your videos!
Hey!! This is exactly where I am in my life currently. I completed my bachelors with flying colours (and I’m already 25… because COVID hindered the graduation process). I’ve been working in the industry for almost 2 years now as a Business Analyst (not data oriented) but my life feels monotonous… which I don’t enjoy as I did in the beginning. There’s nothing exciting anymore in my role. I’ve always wanted to do a PhD and I feel like now is the right time to shift my focus there. But the question is… which area in CS? 🥲 I don’t particularly enjoy a lot of coding or techy things… I like working with people, thinking of business+IT stuff and doing creative things like UI/UX designing. But I’m not sure if a PhD in HCI would align with this? And if doing that would actually be useful in the future? I also thought of trying to be a part of an active research with my college professors, but my current job is too demanding. 😥 So how will I manage the time to do research and a completely different job is my main concern. 😞 Any advice?

Eugenie - Great video. Can you also share your research experience and what is the process? And is a Master's Thesis/PHD research difficult
you are so wholesome
Eugenie: "I am still the biggest introvert I know". Me: Still afraid to go out, due to the potential of interacting with people.
:P. Love the video.

Eugine please make a video on Mathematics.
I get it. If you pick the correct college sweater you can save money on AC and look good in movies. Also, science stuff.

@@wiliam7670 hey William, I don’t know if you’ll see this but I am also applying for a PhD in economics too! We should connect!
Do you need to pay for a PhD in USA? Here in Belgium, you get paid to do it
I believe most if not all PhD programs in the United States are fully funded with a modest amount of stipend to cover basic living expenses.
great
Your SoP is soooo looong.
Miss smarty

Thank you for this video. Is there any CV format for Ph.D. applicants without research experience?
I just added my template for CV and SoP in the description :D
Failing to STAY ALIVE and not pass away is not an option!
oh god , you are cute .
Was it a cs lab? How does that work?
