I've heard it surmised that GW hadn't really set out to produce a single paint line, but instead had bundled together a number of disparate paint formulas they had been working on into the same range. The result being inconsistency.
Unlike Army Painter's SpeedPaints, or Warcolours's Antithesis Paints, which were designed from the ground up to be a competitor to Contrast Paints. And, therefore, to do what Contrast was marketed as doing, whether all the paints in the Contrast line were built for it or not.

I wasn't big on contrast paints early on, but I used them to paint the entire Marvel United kickstarter and now I'm in love. I have about half of the range and a couple hundred hours of experience with them. Your thoughts sum them up fairly well. If speed paint performs as you and other reviewers have seen, then I'll be getting the entire range eventually.

There are 5-8 pots of contrast that are really good as a go to for almost any painter’s toolbox. The range is a little hit and miss with coverage and how it applies to a model. Speed paints seem to cover and behave the same across any color that I’ve seen so far.

  • @Em90000l

They look really good, especially for power armour but I'd be interested in seeing how they're used on more organic surfaces.

Similar, no noticeable downside, half the price and already in a dropper bottle rather than a comedy tub. I mostly make my own with artist ink, matt media, thinner and flow improver, but if I wanted an out of the bottle paint to do a base colour on a whole army then these seem a no brainer. (mind I don't use contrast paint for base colours)

I have found that putting a thicker oil wash over a model (especially one with a matt undercoat, so it has something to grip onto) in the same manner as a contrast paint, nets a very similar result. With a big upside that you can manipulate the paint for hours afterwards, so you can remove it where is it laid on too thick and can fix any pooling that occurred.

  • @oliverp3545
    @oliverp3545 2 года назад

The thing to be said about these 2 paint ranges is that they work differently despite their apparent same purpose.
This comes from the fact that Speedpaint works by having medium and different pigments pulling on the surface at different strengths, the darker ones pulling more than the lighter, creating separation in such a way that it looks different paint colours were used on different layer.
Contrast otherwise works by being a layer that creates it's shading from the shaded areas having more paint which creates a more concentrated colour, which is why you don't see a pull nearly to the extent of the Speedpaints, and that it's medium just sits on the surface rather than sinks into recesses.

  • @jorey4565

Dana you can find a better way, there are two miracle solutions:
-GW contrast or other lavis/washes/glacis/inks of any brands for any flat surfaces(armor,vehicules,spaceship,etc...)worked perfectly only spray them with a airbrush, needle 0.2 to 0.4 .
-if you used brush ,please forget acrylics, now time to paint with oil paaint well diluted with white spirit for artist !the result will be marvelous!!

Ultramarine blue vs. Cloud Blue seemed pretty conclusive because I don't want to have to thin down my paints if I can help it.
Then I end up with far more consistent results when painting a whole unit.
I get that you should thin your paints, and when using normal paint I do, but the whole point of Speed Paints is, well, speed, and getting good, consistent results, right out of the pot, is a baseline for whether or not the paint is worth using.
Thanks for this very well constructed comparison. Now I want these paints even more than before.
Seems like a no-brainer that no one should ever buy a Contrast Paint ever again.

    • @giraton1
      @giraton1 2 года назад +1

Oh people will still buy contrast regardless of these speed paints. People use contrast paints in various ways for very specific jobs, where as Speed Paints are very good for quick basing, which is the advertised purpose of both types so speed paints are better for that.
So for intended purposes, if thats all you want, then yeah, skip contrast, but contrast still has uses that are very specific and can be better than speed paints, not to mention some people going for army matching are "bought in".

I feel sorry for anyone who "needs" Contrast Paints.
It's like GW has stolen their soul. No way they're worth using at the price they cost as many of their effects can easily be reproduced with much cheaper methods, and relatively easily, even before we had an alternative like Speed Paints.

I think they are clearly a contrast 1.5, if you are after a quicker more consistent thickness across the range, and cheaper option, with less medium use. I'll consider replacing contrast with them as tests next year. I have wayyyy to many contrast paints but mostly use them as x2 thinned-out coats to avoid looping and get consistency. This then takes twice as long ... so speed paint may be speedier ....

I've only really used contrast paint for two situations. The base coat for Necrons, using a black contrast over a white undercoat sprayed over a grey undercoat before applying silvers and gold. The other is for Orks, pretty much ork skin for boyz, speed painting orks basically and honestly those are the only two situations where I find they look fine.

The primer are different, thats why the Citadel contrast paint results seem to be worse. You actually NEED to use the Primers, that Citadel recommends (Grey Seer and Wraithbone) in order to get optimal results. The way contrast colors from citadel flow with or without the correct primer is very different. There are actually videos on this topic. So yeah, if you want a fair comparison, use the actual primers, that are recommended and not offbrands!

Overall a fair test and like you said: It'll be fun to try the whole range. I have ALL the contrasts, though I haven't actually used them all much yet, but for future projects I know I'll "need" them all.
I know that Space Marine is also like THE trademark GW model, but to be fair they're not an ideal test-model for either paint. (1 exception would be Space Wolves with more textures, fewer helmets and just more ornaments with pelts to break up all the smooth surfaces, but whatever.) Naturally there's a LOT of painters/players who play these, but to see how well they can perform it's more "fair" to try them out on something more organic, like almost anything out of the Daemons book, or almost anything from AoS Sylvaneth.
But by all means, you can see the finish and some of the main differences even on Space Marines, so it does work. I'm very excited and it seems both ranges have their stronger and weaker ones, as you might expect. Overall it's a win-win for painters as we now get some more competition and more overall products that both do the same thing! :D Yet another great vid, can't wait for more content when the full range releases! :D

However I have a small tip that may help someone - recently I struggled with getting intended colour with Citadel Contrasts and my friend told me to 'thin them down as they were never meant to be used right from the bottle' (which is something opposite to Dana's view). At least based on my friend's knowledge its good to treat most (but not all!) of Citadels contrast as a 'highly condensed essence' that needs to be diluted. Nontheless try both approaches and find what suits Your needs, Cheers!

These paints have been instant on demand since they were announced. Citadel's contrast paints are a mix of different textures which really goes against what a contrast paint is for. AP brand speed paints all seem to be the exact same consistency which will lead to consistency in the end product, the Miniature. Been using Citadel paints for 30 plus years now and while I have never had any problems with them, their contrast paints are suspect. All over the place in terms of use for each color which makes using them frustrating without a ton of foresight and usage. I will for sure be getting a set of these and the odd colors will eventually find a use probably in mixing other colors.

Your call on Citadel Wyldwood and AP Dark Wood was sound. If I were you, though, I'd use AP Dark Wood as the under layer for metallic bronze, copper, gold, or rust.

The application of the army painter paints is so consistent. They look gorgeous. I'm so excited for these

I came into the mini-painting hobby by way of Army Painter. While the colour range of GW may be a little bigger, the fact is, I like AP. The colours are nice, they flow well, and they cover nicely. Now, I will say, doing so takes work, but I'm not afraid of that. Yes, you do have to shake the paints well to ensure that the medium and pigments mix well - it's a standing joke about AP paint - but if that's the only issue, I think I can work with it. The fact is, the price is worth it. And clearly, with the recent airbrush paint release, as well as these speed paints, the company is doing well, in spite of their reputation as "budget paint." I have recently taken to using Contrast paint. I didn't like them at first - i found them akin to kids watercolours. Then I actually sat down and used a few. While there is a learning curve, they are a useful painting tool. I started watching Warhipster on RUclips here and found his techniques incredible. Im floored by the things he does with Contrast Paint. I loved his work on the Cursed City models and have slowly been working on my own in a similar manner. I am by no means a good painter, but I enjoy what I do, and I am quite happy how things are improving. Now, if AP is coming out with contrast colours, I will need to take a look. I like Contrast Paint. I DO NOT like the $9.40 CDN cost. That's well, utter BS. for a wee bottle of paint. So if AP can do the same job for less, go Army Painter!

I don’t use any contrast paints straight out of the bottle. I thin them all 1:1 or 2:1 medium:paint
If you just want something to use straight out of the bottle purely for speed then AP is probably better. But, if your using price point as a comparison, then contrast might actually be cheaper if you take thinning into account.
The real test for me is how well you can wet blend two different colors, because that is my favorite way to use contrast paints.

Also contrast paints by their very nature are water proof. It specifically says to not use a wet pallet with them. You shouldn't with contrast or metallic paints.

Thanks for this review and comparison. I’m a huge fan of Army Painter because I paint quick and dirty, and I was looking for this kind of “contrast” equivalence.

I am still pretty new to the hobby, but i have quickly come to the understanding that the only thing you need to buy from GW are the models,. Everything else they sell can be found better, cheaper or both from other companies.

Dear Dana, lovely video. As much as I like to use contrast paints, i struggle with them more often than not. I would love you (or any of your esteemed colleagues) to make a video or series along the line, how to use the individual contrast colours to the best of their properties. Which colour needs (approximately) how much medium? Which is best used through the airbrush? Which one is fine as is? Are there certain brushes or other techniques especially suitable? ... lalala, etc.

People often comment that the best way to apply even contrast paint is to stippled it rather than to drag it like a normal paint. However, since AP speed paint doesn't seem to require this I'd say it's another advantage

I appreciate your insight and look into comparative colors between the ranges.
The application of the paints seemed a bit thick, But that might be because when I use contrast paints I do them over a pure white base, and that makes it really easy to have super thin layers.

I don't know if Green Stuff World Intensity Inks are easily available worldwide, but I would recommend you (everyone interested in a cheaper alternative to GW's Contrasts) to try them. I recently acquired the full range, and I can tell the blue and browns definitely hold the comparison to their GW equivalents.

Biggest plus (aside for half the price) is they come in drop bottles; knocking over a GW contrast and having half of it fly out is the most painful thing ive had happen to me in ages

Have you tried shaking the contrast? All your contrast samples look unshaken, which is why you're getting that uneven, thick, feeling on the brush
