I like the simplistic interface of Xaero's much better, but Journeymap let's you manage TP perms out of the box for multiplayer servers which is hard to pass on, while Xaero's lets you TP as well, but takes quite a bit more extra steps if you want it to work on a multiplayer server.

It is the 1 reason I would chose journey map over xaero, other than that, it is a toss up, I have not seen any issues with slowness in journey map, so have no opinion on that.
I have used Journey map for a long time in single player and on multiplayer. I like that in Journey Map, when you go underground (in caves), it shows the cave layout, were in xaero's map/world or mini it is VERY hard to find this setting and it only works in the minimap mode, you can, in journey map, click on 'M' for MAP when in cave and it will show you the cave level/layout you are in. I have not found a way to do this in the world map mode in xaero's world map. if anyone knows how this is 'enabled/turned on', I would be very thankful. Ayesel, nice video comparison, but, could you do a more 'IN DEPTH' settings video for Xaero's mini map AND world map. Thanks in advance.
Xaero's wins hands down for me. If I see JourneyMap in a pack, it immediately gets deleted and replaced with Xaero's. In terms of performance, JM is so slow that it fails to map 10 render distance even while walking in a straight line, where Xaero's can keep up with elytra flight at much higher distances without even breaking a sweat. Doing that on JM results in a minimap where the only mapped areas look like small holes in a giant slice of swiss cheese. Tweaking the advanced settings to run the mapper more often doesn't help either. That just results in even more stuttering and lag spikes. Xaero's just works butter smooth out of the box with no tweaks required. The biggest thing besides performance is that Xaero's is actively maintained (with both bugfixes as well as new features) all the way back to 1.7.10 (yep, not kidding, the most recent 1.7.10 release was 2 days ago as of this comment). JourneyMap's last 1.7.10 update came out in January 2017, and rarely ever gets updates and bugfixes outside of the most recent few MC versions, if at all.
