I like Eric's whole character arc. He started out overconfident and full of energy, got humbled by Alvin, his confidence getting shot down and becoming very quiet, to slowly gaining his confidence back as his skill improved throughout the season.
That's the difference between bravado and confidence.

I will forever respect Chef Alvin for ultimately being the sole individual who allowed Eric to compete. The incredible story of redemption is what made him so unique. He was definitely an underdog, especially as one of the youngest ever.
You know it kinda makes me wonder how many master chef winners we never saw because they got 2 "no". Like had Alvin said no we would've never seen how good Eric is

That moment made me tear up a little because my Grandfather passed away back in December of 2021. I am part of a strong Cantonese family and hearing my language is so comforting.
being an asian kid who hates engineering with passion but is still studying to become one...... this video is so much more motivational than studying for the exam i have tomorrow morning...

Nobody talks about how supportive Pino was to eric. Never disrespected him, always saw how good of a cook eric was. Always congratulated him and supported him. Pino is underrated
Alvin and Eric’s relationship was truly deep. All through out their season, you really saw a father and son type feeling from them. I don’t think we’re gonna have another chef and home cook love like they did for each other.

I admire Alvin's willingness to challenge and believe in Eric; he clearly sees a piece of himself in Eric, and I admire how he encourages him to strive better and achieve more.

i was just about to say the same thing. as soon as he saw eric's potential as well as a bit of himself, i did think he put some asian strictness on him more than the other contestants though lol but eric probably reacted well to that kind of disciplining
Eric has an amazing attribute about him that really propelled him to be better than he was before. He has the willingness to LEARN. He doesn’t talk back when criticized and that something even amazing chefs sometimes do and it makes it unpleasant to teach them. Eric cooks with open ears and is confident in his abilities enough to produce amazing food.
eric and kaila's rivalry was pretty funny. at times, they poked at each other with 'insults' like rivals, other times they just worked together.
And they keep their rivalry on sides when they worked together which is very professional.

I had people I didn't really like in the kitchen, but during rush we just worked together and put personal issues out of our heads. It is really important to forget about your personal beefs during crunch time.
The fact Eric's WIN, and future entirely came down to Alvin setting his upset attitude aside, and chose to be a teacher instead of a judge in that moment during audition. And asked him if he is open to learning or not, to then become the winner. That is amazing.

I feel like Kaila and Eric's bickering was truly to lift each other up to become better. I first noticed this when Kaila told him, "Good job Eric," at 19:54 and Eric thanked her.
Eric has been my all time fav MasterChef contestant.His journey, his story, and his progression, not to mention the type of guy he is, and what he has been doing post MasterChef are all inspiring.

My boyfriend recently took me to R&D and I had no idea it was opened by Eric. The food was so amazing there with a unique twist on Asian classics and watching this video really explains all the hard work and progress he has made throughout his journey. If you're ever in Toronto, highly recommend you stop by his restaurant, it is 10/10!
In season 3 it was used for an alumni challenge, and the noodles from the finale was 1 of the dishes. Red team eventually won and blue was sent to pressure test

The one aspect about Eric that I loved is that he was humble throughout the entire competition. He knew his weakness and his strength and was humble to point out when he would struggle. Kaila and Marida were so arrogant thinking the whole time that they were better than Eric and they belittle him no matter how good he showed them he was.
In the end, they both failed against Eric. Asian power is really impressive and a force that needs to be dealt with in a serious way, if they wished to bring a Masterchef like Eric down.

I love Eric’s humble spirit, hard work and willingness to continue learning. I always root for those type of people in life.
To think this guy's whole opportunity could have gone down the drain in the first episode. Teaches us to be more humble and think twice before being snappy at someone who clearly knows better. However that reply showed him as a whole. He kept slipping and getting back up. What a great trait on a person.

I love the idea of imagining that Eric is the leading character of the Master Chief stories...His face were tense,melo dramatic,serious and fighting spirit with humble expression behind the scene in the kitchen....The antagonist were the ones who push the main character to be the best that he can be and the awards was all worth it...such a very excellent show ... Seeing Eric so all over the place honestly reminds me too much of myself. I don't know if other Asian kids can relate to this but growing up in a household that always expects you to be on top of everything, being this messy and just sweating buckets over every task is a familiar feeling. Honestly not sure if it's the same for Eric but I sometimes overdo it in showing that I'm working just to show that I am because sometimes what just feels like 'slowing down' or 'calming down' looks too much like you're slacking off to your parents and a scolding about 'letting your future go' isn't exactly something you'd want to hear while you're already beating yourself up in your head.

Honestly, it just breaks my heart. It's such a toxic family trait, and I don't understand why people just accept it as a part of Asian culture like it isn't a problem. It's good for parents to want the best for their kids, and it's good to push them to achieve, but love for your children ought to be unconditional, and respect/approval shouldn't be a bar set much higher than that. Of course your kids will make decisions you dissaprove of, and make mistakes that don't warrant respect. But if, overall, your kid is honest and has integrity, and is pushing forward to live a life that's meaningful to them, and trying as hard as they can to do well by those they love, that should be good enough to respect them and approve of them, whether that means they have a PhD, or are a single parent working two jobs to put food on the table for their kids. Your child shouldn't have to be a prodigy to deserve your approval. And you should love them regardless even if they're a flat out failure of a person. That ought to be a unique characteristic of the bond between a child and a parent. I grew up with friends that had so many emotional and mental health challenges because nothing they ever did was good enough for their parents, even if it was the fullest realization of the best possible effort they were capable of putting forward. It was horrible. If they would have just shown their kids love, grace, and a little respect for their efforts (even if said efforts weren't for anything all too grand), I know they would have achieved much greater things and would be leading much more fulfilled lives. Instead they're just miserable, all because their parents couldn't recognize their worth where they were at in that moment. Terrible way to parent, and a toxic culture that doesn't deserve to live on through history. I don't care what country it's from or how integral it is to their way of life. If their way of life necessitates such abuse, then their way of life is garbage, and needs to change.
this season was amazinng, simply kaila and erics frenemies story arc is so well edited! it made you really root for both of them!

Eric is obviously very talented but i really think that without Chef Alvin’s mentoring, he wouldn’t have won.
He won because he kept pushing himself to make difficult dishes and kept pushing his speed
He frequently self destructed because of his difficult dishes and the speed required
And kept improving and getting stronger
I still think Marida doesn't deserve to be in Top 2 with him. It should be either with Kayla or Tammara vs Eric in the final. Marida kept using Trinidad / Indian cooking every time while Eric always took a risk and always making variation in his dishes by making desserts, noodles, and everything. He's even making 8 donuts while the judges just want 3 donuts in donut challenge. He's very creative even though he was 21 years old at that time.
@@margarethmichelina5146 what your saying makes no sense and isn't right. When Erick made 8 different donuts it didnt turn out good and he could have gotten sent home, there's nothing wrong with cooking foods from specific country they just care about versatility and how good it tastes.
@@Daniel_ACG Well to the judge's eyes it is wrong to cook only from one cousine, especially when they've already pointed it out in the show.
@@Daniel_ACG If you're a good cook, you should be able to cook any food from any different countries. That's how you qualify as Masterchef. Eric has proven himself that he is able to make any different types of food or any styles while Marida is struggling in Nanaimo Bar challenge and in Dim Sum challenge (maybe because she got Julie as her teammate)
I swear Alvin and Eric had a different relationship altogether... reminded me of a father who honestly wants his favourite child to get everything he wants... without making it obvious lmao
Alvin was totally Yoda and Master Wu Kwei and Master Splinter and Mr Miyagi rolled into one chef shifu package.
Now I'm at a particularly challenging cookery school and recently being diagnosed with ADHD Eric very very much reminds me of myself.
It's often frustrating and I often feel like I'm not good enough to the point where I feel like I should just quit. But I still somehow get my dishes out. And seeing Eric cook is like a reflection of myself, and seeing Eric succeed literally brought tears to my eyes.

The need to overdo the task to prove oneself, and the impatience and frazzlement all together... My heart goes out to him! Alvin believed in him despite the trouble, and I'm glad they are business partners!

an engineer and a master chef at the age of 21 *WOW* when I was in elementary and middle school I used to think being 21 was old but now that I am 20 turning 21 later this year I realize how much dedication, commitment and grit you must have to have to achieve these feats at such a young age! Big ups to Eric's family! we can see how family oriented he is and how he doesn't want to disappoint his family.. they did an outstanding job raising Canada's first masterchef!

Wow, I can’t believe he almost didn’t make the cut to be on the show, they guy gave him a chance to prove himself and he really did.
As Eric wins masterchef he slowly walks towards chef Alvin with a grin on his face goes near to his side and whispers "I told you it wasn't burnt", then walks away without looking back leaving Alvin with a shocked expression as he looks back at Eric.
Eric is honestly an inspiration. He was close to going home so many times but yet he managed to win it all.

At the beginning he was one of those rough around the edges, lots of natural talent and potential but clumsy and unrefined, types. He started off the competition amazing, top of the class. Then he started to plummet once he was forced to do things outside his comfort zone and had multiple close shaves with failure. Then recovers strong and comes out on top in the end. What a wild ride
As a Canadian audience member, I've liked Eric (season 1) and David (season 2). The first was in a hero's journey, while the latter sat in the throne and protected himself from being conquered.
“Be humble” “don’t underrate your food brother” that shows he really listened and took in his superiors advice to heart. Great guy

If there was an anime adaptation based on Eric's story with this kind of redemption arc, i would watch it with pure excitement.
Eric is the reason why I continue to watch this channel even if its just old clips.
This is why Eric is my favourite MasterChef. We could all learn something from this very inspirational guy.

2023 september 3rd 6:39am: 5 months later, i am back rewatching eric chong'smasterchef journey
The way Alvin told him out in the beginning, that indeed got Eric's attention and he responded very well. That to me is the true definition of commitment.
Eric's attitude and character improvement throughout the entire show is just *chef's kiss*
Eric really did give his 100%, if he didn't, he was always improving and learning from his mistakes, adapting to his environment.
I watch his videos now and he's so different compared to his Day 1 on MasterChef.

I thought Eric was definitely going home after talking back to Chef Alvin. “When a chef tells you it’s burnt, it’s burnt”. Love how Chef Alvin comes back down to Eric with an apron on the line, and still gives him a chance. Chef Alvin is my favorite judge. Love how he builds up your confidence in yourself.

I think it's more like Cantonese since in Chinese, they said "Thank You" as "Xie Xie" and Alvin and Eric ever spoke Cantonese once in Childhood Dish Mystery Box.
Cantonese is like Southern Accent version in Chinese.
@@Sup_Mmchipmunks it's Cantonese. It's a dialect of Chinese, mostly spoken around the Guangzhou region and Hong Kong. There are many Cantonese-speaking people in Singapore and Malaysia as well. Eric probably said it was Chinese because it's easier to explain it to mainstream audiences then to go in-depth to explain the differences between Chinese and Cantonese.
@@margarethmichelina5146 I wouldn't necessarily call Cantonese an "accent" of Chinese/Mandarin since they're not mutually intelligible. As @Cool Coleslaw mentioned in their comment, it's instead considered a dialect. They do share a writing/reading system, but the spoken words are distinctly different.
