I remember this video when it came out. I used to leave it playing in the background as I fell asleep. I was lucky enough to see iron and wine live for the first time about 4 years ago. Still one of the greatest performances I've ever seen. Moved me to tears.
Sam Beam is a poet. He tells beautiful stories through intimate music. One of the greatest talents of the last decade. That voice is no accident, either.
100% love him unplugged. thats how i prefer him as well, most of my covers are his songs, every camping trip and hike i get compliments because of this man.
Iron & Wine delivering an awe-inspiring performance in São Paulo last 2nd September is going to be one of my fondest memories ever. Hearing his voice feels like home. I was so overwhelmed that I hardly noticed the bloody mobile/camera freaks and pissing Twilight Saga twats taking stupid selfies during the concert (there should be a law against these people even breathing). But Sam is a perfect gentleman, so he rose above it. He played for 2 hours straight and that was the case when just a man and his guitar suffice to transcend. I’ve been a fan for 10 years or so but only at the concert did I realise the prodigiously gifted (and yet kind and humble) instrumentalist Sam is. Sometimes, when playing a bluesy tune, he’d go into a solemn trance-like state, meaning every word coming out of his mouth. That was sheer awesomeness! But he had fun as well, cracking jokes now and then. So I can hardly wait for his next Brazilian tour.
Showing this to my 14 year old daughter .. I use to rock her to sleep on my lunch breaks to this so her mom could rest.. I’m now 40 years old..funny how this seems like a lifetime away to my baby, but only yesterday to me .. tears in my eyes, not because I’m sad, but because I’m laughing .. life is funny that way !! thank you Sam 🖤
This is only further proof that Sam can do whatever he wants musically. Whether it's a throw back to the older days (like this session) or bringing a new spin on his words like he does in Kiss Each Other Clean and The Sheapards Dog. It never ceases to evoke emotion and thought.
I don't even want to hear the album versions; I want the album acoustic like this. I can get so much accomplished with him in my ear. Edit: Nine years later I have to say that I’ve heard the album versions and they feel overproduced. I still come back here for the truest expression of these feelings wrapped up in the cloak of song. 😢
I think hes where he wants to be in the music industry, hes well respected by a TON of people who see meaning in his lyrics and he never sold out. As soon as youre on the radio people only really know your chorus and its almost like your songs lose meaning in being overplayed. Which clearly, his lyrics mean alot to him with how well thought out they are.
Good quality music can be mellow without being sappy. This is one of the few "singer/song writer" music that I can listen to without wanting to throw up.
It's an amazing thought that I have this man's signature hanging on my wall and that I have seen him in person. At the same time, it's extremely humbling to know he is just a man with a fantastic way of expressing his thoughts. He has forever changed my life and is my inspiration in most things I do.
I've watched this video atleast 100 times, and this time, to my abject horror, I saw the dislike button highlighted blue, must have done this blasphemous act by accident, quickly amended it to it's rightful thumbs up!
I saw Sam live in Amsterdam in Paradiso more than a year ago, he was on the other side of the place, but you felt like you were sitting next to him, singing his song as if it was for one person. With this the same, the quality is fantastic (that helps too) but I feel exactly as then. :)
So many musicians i listen to who do these acoustic sessions and just fucking blow me away. This is one of them. Why not just release the albums like this in the first place? Who the fuck needs drum and bass?
I'm so gutted his acoustic concert is sold out. I'll be at the one the next day (full band!) but I would have killed to see Sam sat there on stage, on his own with his guitar.
It is something odd, yet very special about Sam. To me he feels so strange and mystical, yet I feel like I have known him for years, even though videos such as this one is the closest I have ever come to him. It's a feeling of nostalgia, love and curiosity, I think. His lyrics are so perfect. Even though the words coming from his mouth often makes little sense on its own, our mind are given the opertunity of creating a vision of what his songs are about, and that's what makes them so amazing. xx
Got front row seat for his solo gig and the second night with his band in nov in london..without doubt the best musician around at the moment..(though after this ill be def lookin forward to his accoustic set alot more, gonna seriously unappropiatly charge the stage if he does sodom south georgia..you with me?)
one of the best lyricists of our generation
Those blue-eyed birds he was talking about have the coolest dad ever.

I have been listening to this consistently for 8 years. It never gets old!
Me too. Listening, 2 September 2023. Saw him just recently in Kingston, New York.
Me too....

If Sam came out and said he was the second coming, I would struggle not to believe him.
Thats funny..
Holy shit upward over the mountain is probably one of the few songs I cant listen to without shedding a tear. Beautiful music
He really needs to do a remake acoustic album of every last one of his songs
shoot me a message for some amazing soundboard recordings if you're still interesting in this years later :)
@@jamesriley72281 heya I need these! Hope years more later isn't too late.
@jamesriley72281 if you ever see this, yes please. That would be a treasure.
Exactly
I prefer Sam's acoustics over the electronic mixed into his studio songs. That being said, still an amazing artist regardless!
x2
Acoustic goes natural with the heart rhythms :) love and life thought 💭 beautiful sounds- I love Acoustics and drum circles:)
100% love him unplugged. thats how i prefer him as well, most of my covers are his songs, every camping trip and hike i get compliments because of this man.

Ten years later, I’m back to listening to these songs. I missed how I felt when listening to his music.
Big burned hand just blows me away. Listened to it a thousand times. Like a sirens song.

Agreed!
Absolutely!
You make sleeping a friend who's sick and can't sleep.
I love this session.

Amen brotha
The acoustic versions of these songs, with Sam Beam solo, resonate SO much more with me.
His songs are so vivid, even with just an acoustic!
by far my favourite of the 4AD sessions
Good quality music can be mellow without being sappy. This is one of the few "singer/song writer" music that I can listen to without wanting to throw up.
Awwwww yesssss dude I missed you so much Sessions missed you so much !!
This is some truly great song writing.

biting your tail is amazing when it's acoustic!
Indubitably!
I can't even listen to the version of this song on cd after hearing this!
Yes
Wow, can't get enough of these songs. Sam Beam is such a genius.
Editing guy: "Oh my god, check out this angle. Now this one. Now this one. Lets put 3 in every second."
It was on beat to how he was singing
I know right? It really took me out of the music. When I play this video, I always have to listen to the audio by itself. Otherwise, I feel queasy..
So glad I got to see him live, need to see him play again...
Dear Sam Beam, you have touched my heart. You make me want to be a better human. ♥
who would thought, from visual artist to one of the most talented guys in music... gives me a hope ;)
Stunningly masterful in creativity and it's simplicity helps with grace of understandment.
Thanks for fighting for me, and my freedom.
May your burdens be light, and your mind lighter
Tree by the river, what a beautiful song.
I've watched this video atleast 100 times, and this time, to my abject horror, I saw the dislike button highlighted blue, must have done this blasphemous act by accident, quickly amended it to it's rightful thumbs up!
Thanks for serving! He keeps me sane too some days.
May your love be your only religion.
preach it to us all.
This song is the definition of my life.
well... if that wasn't perfection I'm not sure what is. I've watched this video countless times
Lol he was at my house yesterday. His daughter is my Bestfriend. I just met her a while ago, and I had no clue her dad was famous!
This is unbelievable, my all time three favourite songs by him are the last three here.
takes me back to fond memories. Thank you sir.
he is singing as if for fun this is why i love this version because i found it when it is just right for my mood.
So happy that he did them in acoustic version too :) Beautiful and pure Sam ...
I agree all to much, no matter how many times its played I get that one little tear
can't stop listening
I love everything about this session. Upward Over the Mountain gave me chilllls.
I simply adore the Don McLean-esque qualities of Tree by the River... Wonderful.
music speaks out against war but will support in peace at great lengths
How amazing is this? I cant even put it to words.
I'm so happy right now
Wow... he will be on the main scene within a year.
I love love love Iron and Wine!!
"Time isn't kind or unkind you liked to say, but I wonder to who and what it is you're saying today"
You feed the Human soul--thank you!
Just like Nick Drake, Sam sounds so much better by himself.
Yes I agree, some artists just sound so much better solo than doing the band thing.
Zach Galifianakis sings like an angel! :)

So good to hear✨
Thats so sad but incredible at the same time.
WOW this guy, never stop to amaze me
Great man! a poet and musician
How come i know about this guy only now? he's awesome, awesome songs.

I always prefer his session stuff, this one is gold.
So many musicians i listen to who do these acoustic sessions and just fucking blow me away. This is one of them. Why not just release the albums like this in the first place? Who the fuck needs drum and bass?
Very beautiful session! Thanks!
Vai Moscardelli! Non pensavo avessi una così bella voce...
What a beautiful set.. great version of big burned had! Come to South Africa
I'm so gutted his acoustic concert is sold out. I'll be at the one the next day (full band!) but I would have killed to see Sam sat there on stage, on his own with his guitar.
Thanks, Andre.
