- Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo gives Architectural Digest a tour of her home with some insight from her interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard. The house was built by Paul Williams who was hired by silent film star Antonio Moreno, Jr. Though Pompeo initially didn't like Bullard's idea of wood on the walls of the dining room, once she saw it in action, it became her favorite room. The kitchen was originally three rooms, created in the '20s, but now is "the heart of the home". The biggest challenges had the biggest payoff. The balcony is such a great feature. The yard was unusable but is now a full usable acre.

Ellen is such a wonderful person. Love how she didn't just hire a stranger to do her whole house & she had tons of input, even though she has the money to just hand over and have it done for her. You can tell how much she loves her space!

She seems so down to earth for being one of the highest paid actresses in tv. Her home is big but it’s modest like the designer said, nobody is afraid to touch things in this house because it was too expensive. Everything in the house gets used. That’s awesome.
How amazing is it that she has a copy off the textbook "Gray's Anatomy" 1:16 on her bookshelf? As a medical student and a fan of the show, I am raving! :D

I don't know how I'm watching this in 2020, but the fact that this home was built by one of the first certified African-American architects of the 1920's is Everything! Paul Williams accomplished so much throughout his life and career. So awesome🙌🏾

This designer is AMAZING. He did such a fantastic job in answering the call of those large, theatrical spaces without going over the top and garish. He used contemporary pieces without them seeming out of the place in a vintage home, which is damn hard to do. I love the bold, dark colors, I don’t have the courage to do that. The light fixtures are my favorite things. Is this the same guy that did her Hampton, NY home? That was naturally a very different vibe but I loved it, and suggested that AD do one of their Open Door videos there, I’ll have to find it again and see. Kudos to Ellen for working with this designer, and for having such an appreciation for good design and good taste herself.

Reality for others in the world....
First, take out the furniture in your house, leave a few old blankets, a kitchen table, maybe a wooden chair. You’ve never had a bed, remember?
Second, throw out your clothes. Each person in the family may keep the oldest suit or dress, a shirt or blouse. The head of the family has the only pair of shoes.
Third, all kitchen appliances have vanished. Keep a box of matches, a small bag of flour, some sugar and salt, a handful of onions, a dish of dried beans. Rescue those moldy potatoes from the garbage can: those are tonight’s meal.
Fourth, dismantle the bathroom, shut off the running water, take out the wiring and the lights and everything that runs by electricity.
Fifth, take away the house and move the family into the toolshed.
Sixth, by now all the other houses in the neighborhood have disappeared; instead there are shanties - for the fortunate ones.

Love all the black!! That black walled library is fantastic. Most people are scared to go with black rooms or black paint, but Meredith (sorry Ellen you’ll always be Meredith to me 😂) went for it and the payoff is dramatic and stately, warm yet bold. Love it!!!
