    I went to this recording session. It was announced on the "soul" station. I lived in Hollywood so jumped in my old Pontiac Bonneville and drove down to the church. Everyone was very nice to me. There were a couple of days. Mick Jagger attended one of them. One of the most insane experiences of my life.

Those people that are fans of certain other artist want to show their loyalty to them with a lie that they are the greatest. When their favorite artist done already told them who is the greatest singer of all times, who will forever be the only Queen of Soul. Gladys Knight, Anita Baker, Patti Labelle. Chaka Khan, Roberta Flack, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Brandy, Beyonce, Mary J Bliege and whomever else they can think of all bow down to the one Aretha Franklin, when it comes to anyhing dealing with singing and music.

    I love it, can’t wait to see it!!!! I remember riding back and forth from Chicago to Detroit with my grandmother Selena in her big beautiful Cadillac Brougham to service her Hair Weev* clients in Detroit listening to THIS 8track tape all the way there and a week later all the way back!!! She still loves it and enjoys listening to it when I play it for her, especially Oh Mary Don’t You Weep at almost 94 years young. Who didn’t love this album??? Nobody that ever heard it that’s for sure. This recording touched generations of souls! I was a child, I loved it, my mother and my great grandmother loved it!!! If one didn’t love the entire album they had a favorite on the album. We had the album and the 8 track and when I got older I bought my own on a cassette tape and it is now and has been on my IPod. ITunes wasn’t hip to it just like they weren’t hip to Ms. Aretha Franklin’s Live at Filmore... they are now. I heard Aretha Franklin so much growing up between the songs my mother loved , my aunt and my grandmother loved and the ones that were on the jukebox in my grandmother’s salons I used to imagine and pretend Aretha was my aunt!
    Her niece is so pretty, she looks just like her mother. I feel for her son, my mother and his mother (Ms. Franklin ) were both born in the same year and both passed only months apart. My beautiful loving best friend and awesome Mom, Juanita passed suddenly January 8, 2018...it still hurts.

Everyone has been waiting to see this film for years and I wouldn't be surprised if it is nominated for an Oscar and wins, I can tell it's just that good!!! One of Ms. Franklin's most underappreciated gifts is her musicianship, which has largely been overshadowed by her singing. Her ears and her piano playing were extraordinary.
    Sidebar comment: I imagine there is probably very little(if any) footage of the session musicians who played on this recording. Would have loved to actually see how Bernard Purdie(drums), Chuck Rainey(bass guitar), Kenneth "Ken" Lupper(organ), Pancho Morales(percussion), and Cornell Dupree(lead guitar) did their thing in a Gospel music element.

      That's because most lay people aren't into instrumental music. So many great musicians are in the background once a singer pops onstage. When many love to argue about divas, I always say let those other divas sit down and play piano if they can. Aretha was, as you've said, top-notch!!

    Aretha was a special gift to us. Every time she hit the stage we were in for a treat. My mother introduced me to Aretha Franklin when i was about 5 or 6 during some Saturday chores. I'll never forget being so intrigued by the album cover of her wearing the green ensemble with the boa for a collar. Later in life as Aretha got older and gradually lost a few octaves from her voice it simply amazed me how she worked around it and still continued to soar and put on a great show that was very entertaining.

      She didn't lose anything except maybe some lung capacity due to smoking, which forced her to go to her head voice for the high notes in her old age. She never lost any range, or her ear. Penny Proud it really is. Go look at the number of views and comments under the Jussie Smollett video that’s been posted & available to view for a much shorter time than this one. People would rather participate in a witch hunt rather than a concert any day

    People criticized her for crossing over to secular music.
    I think that God wanted it that way, so she could bring
    the Gospel sound to a wider audience. Gospel music
    is a vehicle through which people can experience the
    Presence of God.

      Yes! Agree wholeheartedly! If it weren't for Aretha we wouldn't have many of the gospel artists who we have now such as Yolanda Adams and the Clark sisters, to name a few. She paved the way for both those in gospel and pop music in general.

    They Just Couldn't sing like Aretha Franklin back Then. Mahalia Jackson was the only one who could Go up Against Aretha when it comes to Singing.

      mAGIC BLAck so true. Her & Mahalia had unique voices! You can tell Aretha was inspired by Mahalia in a huge way. Her soulful style of singing, the facial expressions

    • @lilsouth01
      @lilsouth01 5 лет назад +9

      Vocally Mahalia Jackson wasn't on Areatha Level.

    • @q.c.chieftain3085
      @q.c.chieftain3085 5 лет назад +19

      foo 83 , shiiiit! You’re entitled to your opinion but they both were in a class by themselves. Aretha was a soprano & Mahalia was a contralto (soprano, alto, & tenor) besides from different generations. Comparing them is like apples 🍎 & oranges 🍊. I agree with Magic Black, Mahalia could vocally go up against her but Aretha had a more up to date singing style, could play the piano, very talented, & had backup singers, & on here a powerful choir(Southern California Community) but Mahalia didn’t need any of that because her voice was too damn powerful. Mahalia had a powerful, strong voice. Hell along with Clara Ward she inspired Aretha, you can clearly tell by Aretha’s gospel style she was.

    They weren't kidding about her ears. She had almost superhuman perfect pitch. You could play a chord on the piano, and she'd break it down vocally into individual notes in a run. I was born in Detroit and lived there until I was about 7 years old. My dad worked for the city's civil rights commission and spent a decent amount of time working with Aretha's dad. I remember dad taking me to that church when I was in preschool and kindergarten in the early '70s. I went back in the summer of '87 and got goosebumps when she sang Ave Maria.
