What makes a parlor guitar a parlor guitar? Why are they so small, and what do they sound like? Parlor (or parlour) guitars are not just guitars of the past that have recently become trendy, but they are instruments with rich histories and characteristic sounds. Featuring the Dowina Granadillo, I'll share a little bit of this instrument's history and let you hear what it sounds like!

Neil, this video has massively impacted my life in a positive way. I found it a few weeks ago when I was suddenly exposed to the idea of parlour guitars. As soon as I saw the video I knew I had to get one.
When I was young, I started with a comfortable size nylon classical and naturally developed the desire to start playing a steel string acoustic. I eventually bought a dreadnought steel string guitar but found it to be quite physically unruly, so I mostly stuck to playing the nylon, and then later on a strat. This was because they were so much more comfortable in my hands compared to the dreadnaught. Might be cos I'm a smaller sized person. For many years I felt haunted by the fact that I never got comfortable with the steel string even though I absolutely loved the sound and playstyle of it. I felt like I was inadequate musically and it sucked.
It just never occured to me that there are different sized acoustics out there!
Well a few days after I saw this video I ordered a cheap (like $200aud) but awesome acoustic-electric parlour and totally fell in love! It's just soooo much more comfortable and feels so good in my hands. I love the sound of it too. It's a very personal and punchy sound. It's hardly left my lap since I've got it. I'm finally enjoying the acoustic and it feels completely second nature like it's an extension of me, rather than something I'm fighting. In short: hallelujah. It is a real gift.
From now on I'm going to be playing on parlours and purchasing many more in the future!!
Thanks for doing what you're doing bro :)

Arman, your experience with parlour guitars is amazing. Thank you so much for sharing! It's incredible to know how switching to smaller sized guitars has helped you enjoy playing guitar and built up your confidence as a guitarist and musician.
Definitely, different guitar sizes suit different people better, as we're all built differently. And it also isn't as straightforward as smaller people play small guitars - it's really up to personal preference and what you feel comfortable with!
Me personally, I started playing medium to large sized guitars for many years, but discovered the joy of smaller bodied guitars and absolutely loved it!
Thank you for sharing. Really glad to have impacted you this way :)

Hey Kona Girl, you're very welcome! Yes I love parlour guitars for that playability and clear sound. If you're comparing them with larger guitars, you'll generally find that they have less of that 'deep' sound. But that's not always a bad thing. I've played many bigger guitars where the bass is way too overpowering and drowns out the sound of notes. This negative quality is described as 'muddy'.

I've always wondered why my guitar was so much smaller than all the other acoustics and why playing past the 12th fret is such a pain but I love the guitar anyway. Thanks for sharing! Yes if you need high fret access, you'd be better off going with a different size, even with a cutaway. I'd say that's more of a 3/4 sized guitar, while many parlor guitars have a full scale length. That doesn't mean it's not a parlor, as the term can also be used loosely. As I described in this video, traditionally it wasn't just the size alone but the function of the instrument that made it 'parlor'. Today we seldom have parlor room concerts, but a guitar like your samick could have been used in that manner. It's a little more nuanced than a yes/no answer ;)

inside the soundhole is a volume/tone controller for the pickup! It's an LR baggs pickup. I'm not selling it, just featuring it because I like the guitar. You can visit Dowina's website if you're keen to buy, or if you're in Singapore this exact piece is in the shop Heirlooms Music :)

I’m based in the philippines. Yes i saw the guitar in singapore website. I want to buty it but taxes for shipping is too much for me. In my experience they’ve taxed me 22% when i purchased guitar overseas. Anything you can suggest? And if there is a chance or promo discount from the store? Thanks
