I don't know the author's intent, but what I got from it is a man's relationship with his own ego. They go together in life always, often fighting. A hiccup is an involuntary muscle reflex, but "hiccup" can also mean a break in a pattern. Like, "a hiccup in the matrix". So maybe the hiccup represents the man ridding himself of the ego, and being free, temporarily.
