I miss these ole corn binders... I drove my first one in 78...it was an Eagle 400 big cam with a 13 spd. Not enough guys are restoring these ole beauties. There used to be so, so many of these everywhere you went then it seemed like they all disappeared all at once.
Those K-models are hefty, and love fuel….but will pull anything you ask it to. Approaching 4 decades since the last one was built for class-8 truck use, but STILL one of the brawniest diesel engines ever built.
Nice Cornbinder !! I new a fella from Granville NY used have a couple of those IH’s with the KT’s in them. He hauled scrap iron and Petroleum tanker , he always said the DOT didn’t think he was loaded heavy because with an engine like that there were no hills anymore.
I'm a big fan of your trucks man, and I appreciate you taking the time to share with us as you go. That's some solid boost there. One day I'll have one, even if it's just on a homemade stand so I can listen to it idle haha.
Only ever saw one of these back in the day. Surprisingly they came stock with dual 4” exhaust piping. Drove a couple of Cummins 350’s. On this model the inside of the doors would crack at the top right where the breezer window lock is. They where a quiet truck when they where new. Then the doors would bang around ti the frames. There bazillions of them around back in the day, and that’s just the ones the pumpkin had on the road.
👍👍just found your video's...kick ass rigs feller... I've got a few of each flavor of engine around here, but don't have an 1150... Wished I did ...but anyway, good stuff man👍👊
Man i love that truck. Thanks for posting!!! Good motivation for me to get mine back together faster. Can’t wait to get mine driving again. That engine installation sure looks great man 😮
That is a sweet old cabby sir! I just swapped the KTA600 out of my pete for a twin with hvt. What an incredible difference in torque. Jakes arent quite as loud though!
@Joey Nemetz they sure have a sound all their own. It seems to be a lot better suited to highway trucks than the straight Ks were. Are you running yours stock or have you had to upgrade anything?
@@badlandsbullhauler I agree they drive so much sweeter than a fixed timed single turbo engine. Did you modify the compound turbo or leave it stock from Cummins?
@Joey Nemetz 1000 horse plus I'm guessing? This one was a 675, used the fuel pump off my 600 and a different high pressure hot house. First week out with it I had to turn it down, it would cut the clutch loose like nothing at 250psi. Down around 220psi to keep the clutch from slipping and I think im still north of 800 horse.
Nothing sounds ,like or works like K . Only thing better is a K38 . Got to work on these in the copper mines at last of the 70s. And early 80s Had a lot of em
They did offer a KT450. I personally never seen one and can't imagine many came with them. I put this one in myself. The truck had a Cummins Small Cam 350 in it when I bought it.
Those were a very popular truck back then, pretty sharp with a multi colored paint job and some chrome and polished aluminum. To your knowledge, was the 12v71 Detroit Diesel offered as well
@russ voight i know it was offered in a 4090 turnpike cruiser. That was a odd truck I between a 4070A and a 4070B. It was a 4070A truck with the cab lifted several inches to fit the big v12. I think the 4070B is somewhere close to a 4090 cab height but don't quote me on that. I also don't know if they offered a 12v71 in a 4070B. I know they offered a 8v92TTA because I had one in a 77 4070B, but I dint remember seeing a factory 12v71
@@JoeyNemetz i seen one in 9670 coe kta -525 , i believed it was a 1982 year. But never seen or heard of one in 4070. Had a 4300 long hood 6" longer than standard hood . cab & hood sat 3" higher with a kta-600 serial # start with KGB, had some very different stuff in it the engine sat approx 2" to the right side & rear engine mounts went over top of frame.

Which one did you restore
yep, they were everywhere!
@@andrewnorris1514 My point was they used to be so popular but now it seems all everyone cares about restoring are Petes and KWs.
Had a 79 350/10 speed with a button in the pump = 400 hp
they all got exported to other countries.

My favorite truck since 1976 and drove them

Thank you!

Nice 78 Joey! I hope my 80 looks that good when I get done with it.
This truck hasn't been painted in the last 20 years. All I did to it was polish the tanks and buff the paint out.
Wow you definitely couldn't tell that paint job was that old by looking at it
Cummins 4 ever 🇯🇲
Yes sir!
Runs like a song 🎵 🎶
It does have a good note to it
Sweet that Cummins sounds good but it needs a Detroit!
Wish I knew K models that well. That's really awesome dude!
I didn't know much about them until a few years ago. Just gotta put your mind to it.
Awesome truck!

Thanks it's been a long but fun road. It always feels good to get put and drive the old classics!

I noticed that too. I like the deeper tone of the Conpound setup better.
@Joey Nemetz they sure have a sound all their own. It seems to be a lot better suited to highway trucks than the straight Ks were. Are you running yours stock or have you had to upgrade anything?
@Donovan Skidmore mines been modified. Has bigger injectors, and a modified upgraded set of turbos. Timing is still stock for a 750hp genset

Did IH offer the KT engine as a factory option or would you have to install one yourself?

If you lower the idle you can really get a nice lope to it in cold starts. Check out Jason keeler on here. He's the ktta genius out in PA
There's a bit more that goes into in than that but thanks for commenting. Look back at my old videos it had a nice lope to it

What transmission is in there and ratio of the rear diff
22918B and 4.11s
How much hp do think that KT is puttin out? My guess is a little over 1000.
Your probably right. There's just about double the CCs of fuel the stock 750hp genset had.
does it have an engine brake?
Yes it does.
Diesel fueled bully!
Need to fix the speedometer LOL
It's fixed now. Replaced with Eaton speed sensors.
Come on splitting gears, it is a k series straight stick it.😮
@BeverlyHolzworth I paid for 18 gears I'm gonna use them 😂
Fuck that I'd rather run a cat but I'll say I'll take a 400 big cam over a Detroit any day
My old 3408DITA stood up to them with the sticks married to the dashboard.
Not many cats will hang with this thing, but to each there own.
I agree. I’m not saying beat ‘em all. But held my own. I had a cat doctor in the backwoods that played with my kitty. Purring along never late V8
It's a cummins!!!
This has got to be the dumbest comment ever! 😂
