琴曲描繪了山林幽谷之間碧澗泠泠、枕流漱石的自然景致，描摹了高逸隱士徜徉其間，自得其樂、閑適疏放的情態，寄托了物我兩忘、天人合一的情懷。
樂曲以獨特的藝術手法，營造出這樣的意境：山高林密、雲氣氤氳的幽谷，傳來樵子悠然的歌聲，空谷回聲愈顯山林的幽深。水聲若隱若現，懸泉瀑佈由遠及近，或幽咽婉轉，或飛流激湍。徜徉其間的逸士神飛誌揚，疏放豪邁。
《西麓堂琴統》解題：“蓋其寓情山水，結盟泉石，恍若懸崖寒溜，跳珠瀑佈，奪人心目。詳玩曲意，真天地同流之妙矣。”
