I have been making flintlocks rifles and pistols for a number of years. It is great to learn new ways to do things. Have you ever considered putting this information on DVD's?
Awesome as usual…. I keep waiting for the grumpy part…my gun building had cuss words….like when I drop a tool, chip something, misplace the part or tool that was literally a moment ago in my hand…
RUclips has restrictions on how grumpy I can get. Most of my cuss words are used when working on my cars. The engineers obviously don't consult with mechanics. Gun building is much more relaxing.
This is by far the best video and best channel I’ve seen on youtube in years! Man I really wanna find a good place to apprentice at for this type of stuff, woodworking, metalwork, gunsmithing and customizing, to be able to make a fairly comfortable living doing that would be the best!
Thank you for doing this video series. I love flintlock rifles. Never built one but I would like to learn and maybe do it for a living one day. Unfortunately, I have no one to apprentice to... so videos like this, along with trial and terror would be my path. Also, if my memory serves me, I purchased a couple of knives (and possibly a tomahawk) from your site at one time.
You spoke of using the modern “conveniences”. I can assure you that the old timers used the most modern conveniences available to them. Why would we not ? I enjoyed the video very much. Good hands.
Great videos. I’ve been using too thick of a piece of brass on the end. For those watching of the originals , a two piece lid was not that uncommon. They were attached using hide glue and some are still around but few. Most of the originals were lost over time. Gorilla or Titebond are very good products.
This series is going to be quintessential reference material when I get to the patchbox stage of my upcoming longrifle build, which is going to be a big undertaking since I'm building the stock out from a blank.
Hello Sir my name is Tony Gasaway I'm 59 and have worked with wood all my life and have recently been taught by Jackie Brown the art of building muzzleloaders. In refining my skills I find myself in need of some higher quality tools, one being files and rasp. Watching your videos I see you have some very nice ones you work with. I'm sure you have had them for years my question is can you point me in the right direction where I can purchase some high quality files and rasp and what brand name I should look for? Thank you for your time Tony
You might be "grumpy" but you are one hell of a craftsman...
yes I am still awake, watching you work, making it look so easy, knowing it looks easy because you are a master.
You make some of the best learning videos on RUclips. Thanks, I am learning a lot from your experience and thoughtful teaching style.
Great to hear!
I agree to that! I could watch Clay for hours!
I enjoy watching a master gunsmith at work
Love your videos and your craftsmanship
Excellent information and video. Your explanation and hands work seamlessly together that even I could understand and follow. Great work!
Good to see craftsmen still doing great work.
Sure love the films Grumpy Gunsmith. Flintlocks are real neat and purdy guns.

Great work as always, Clay! Maybe sometime this year I'll work on my first muzzleloader.
