Honestly, considering how much of a badass she was, I feel like she might have just done it herself for shits 'n giggles.
(Edit: tho my own theory is that she just had a friggin' breakdown)

This was SO INTERESTING!!!! I had no idea about any of Agatha Christie's life story. What an amazing woman.
To me it sounds like she may have started out trying to get away or humiliate her husband, but then possibly slipped into a dissociative fugue state. This state includes a type of amnesia, which would make her forget her identity and assume a completely different identity in a strange and different place. This may even last from months to years, but people usually recover "on their own". Pretty sure this is an actual APA DSM V diagnosis. I don't think assuming a different and novel identity would preclude her from mailing the letter to her brother, taking the name of the mistress might even be considered an unconscious symptom, and going through with a plan, which she might have come up with prior to slipping into the fugue state (like going to a spa somewhere) could also happen. Finally this would explain why she never talked about it, because once recovering from the fugue state and reverted back to her actual identity, she would most likely have suffered amnesia once again. This time the amnesia would be restricted/limited to the time when she was in the fugue state. She would have normal recollections regarding the time prior the initial onset, but nothing from the time during the fugue. It would have seemed to her, as if the time of the fugue had never happened.
    en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fugue_state#:~:text=Dissociative%20fugue%2C%20formerly%20fugue%20state,last%20days%2C%20months%20or%20longer.

Her saying she feared for her life could have been a cry for help or a reference to planning her future suicide. Regardless of the story/mystery, I'm glad she overcame the darkness or whatever it was. It truly would have been an enormous loss to the world.

I grew up watching the David Suchet Poirot mysteries on tv and had no idea about this part of Agatha's life. You have to figure she was under a lot of pressure in this situation, and she had the mind and the means to plan an escape. But maybe she thought about her daughter, or someone talked her out of it, and figured she couldn't just leave so just ended up being incognito for ten days and sticking it to her husband while she was at it. Fascinating story, though

I LOOOOVED THIS VIDEO! I can't believe I knew nothing of Agatha Christie, and this reignites my desire to read her novels (I have one on my shelf). I feel like there is no way that she suffered from amnesia, I think she may have been in a depressed or manic state, BUT considering she traveled safely, brought money, and wrote that letter to her brother??? Agatha Christie must have known exactly what she was doing, and I like to think this is something she wanted people to always wonder about her.

    I really enjoyed this!
Cari's youthful love for the Joan Hickson Miss Marple series is like my love for the Derek Jacobi Cadfael series.
My introduction to this story was via Agatha Christie: A life in pictures, starring Olivia Williams. I totally misheard when Cari said Sunningdale, I heard Sunnydale and immediately wanted to joke, hey, maybe Agatha was off fighting vampires!
As much as I love the Dr who episode about Agatha Christie, my favourite episode referencing literary greats has to be The Haunting of Villa Diodati, "Nobody mention Frankenstein. Nobody interfere. Nobody snog Byron".
    * Cari, your earrings are so pretty!
