Like a slow moving freight train, the years go rolling by. For a brief instant the veil of time is pushed aside, as the boy who was and the man who is come face to face.
Yes, very well said sir! I did not even equate that, but now it makes so much more sense and is deeper meanings opened my eyes further. I remember when this song came out. I’m 55 now and I look back to the years gone by.
Some years ago I posted to this song and one that means a lot to me. I’m now 62 yrs old, deviorsed, 4 kids grown up with grandchildren, I came from a family broken, a father that was a drunk and kicked us around some me and two brothers, as I grew older I married and had 4 children, I was the rock for many yrs as I was when I was young, I married an ugly woman with a lot of anger. She was pretty but turned out well you know, so after 42 yrs the song reminds me of when I was young, when my body let me be a young man
I'm 53 yrs.old now and when ever I listen to this song it's a time to reflect on my life. How my decisions I've made, good and bad, have affected me and the people around me. Twenty years now...............
i,m 55 retired from the military in 08 after 33 years of service (1975-2008),which is 33 years i got to make up for, been to a lot of places around the world ,seen a lot of thing ,and did some things, some good and some bad .and i can relate to the song
Life is short and you never know when your time is .. Enjoy life but what matters is where we spend out eternity and a life without Jesus is a life headed nowhere.. It's your choice but through Jesus there is eternal life in heaven .. I'm so thankful that I choose Jesus .. Because Tommorrow is not promised to to anyone .. Jesus is my Rock ..
Great song. The video version and the 7" single are slightly different in that you can hear the backup singers more on the single and they are The Weather Girls, Martha Wash & Izora Armstead.
Aside from being a great song as others have pointed out in this comment thread, I implore you to recognize the absolute genius guitar work by Rick Vito.

After my Dad died I drove around endless listening to this, it fit him to a tee. He was a rock.
This song speaks truth. Life is short, very short. Enjoy every day you have.
I know right and sometimes I change the lyrics.
40 years where'd they go?
@@nickhill8612 ... I literally just spoke those words . Then I come here and see yours. Wow. 🎶♥️🎶

Isn’t that the truth
I actually never heard this song on the radio until the 2000s (if not later). I’m always going to remember it as the Chevy truck commercials.
Turned 59...where they go...I don't know...I sit and wonder sometimes where they've gone....
Me too, buddy, me too.
I'm 26 and can feel time slide by, i think i understand the stoicism, the desperation..
