What I've gathered is that this song is about how you shouldn't compare your sorrows to others. The violin is his sorrow, bc he talks of playing it for his therapist. He calls it the smallest because he downplays his struggles, so to him they seem small next to others'. If you're struggling, your struggles are valid. Even if someone has it worse, your struggles are still valid.
ooo i love that way of looking at it :) i thought the violin was jack referring to himself, and he calls it the smallest because he feels so small in such a big world. he just wants someone to notice him and his accomplishments. that seems to be a running theme throughout the album, i’ve noticed him looking for that validation in “joe” and a bit of the same in “my play”
You should compare your sorrow to others, makes you grateful to have a better life than theirs and not take for granted what you do have. Just don't complain about it like a baby dropping his lollipop on the sidewalk... talk about it with others and work through it in a mature way.
@@goodmcmorning5169 It doesn't work like that for most people. i think this song speaks a great message, how smaller problems go ignored in favor of bigger problems until those small problems build up and lead to them feeling worse than the people being consoled
@@hystericalbroad Yeah, it's a reference to that saying when it seems like someone is complaining about something that isn't that big a deal/blowing it out of proportion and you have no sympathy, you rub your fingers together and say you're playing the smallest violin in the world (because violins are normally used to play sad music), to show you don't think its really that sad/or needing to be complained about.

"Somewhere in the universe, somewhere someone's got it worse. I wish that made it easier. I wish I didn't feel the hurt." Is a line that resonates for me. I wasn't a huge fan of this album, but this is probably the best song on it. It really exemplifies the feeling of total inadicuacy that comes with having the expectations of family placed on you, sometimes, purely on your own accord. As someone with a lot of army vets in the family, but who can't follow in their footsteps for health reasons, I thank you.
I am dealing with this right now. I have exams in a week, my mum expects me to learn well for it and I just don't feel arsed to study for this shit. Also I need to draw a lot if I want to get into art college but they only count the drawings of stuff you see everyday or nature, not some OCs that you have drawn.
There's this trend going on right now in animator community on youtube, everyone is sharing their progress through the years to the tune of this song :) It's so great to see everyone grow! And hey, maybe it's not grand, maybe it's just a little violin, a little moving cat picture, but you're playing it - and that what counts :)

This is such a good message... just because someone else's problem seem minor, doesn't mean that they don't need to be heard. Everyone is different. Something small to you may be massive to another. It's not less important, we all need a shoulder sometimes.
@@certifiedFartSmella it means though someone else’s problem seems small, doesnt mean its not important to not help them. We gotta help ppl with their problems whether its a small or big problem.
@KingPotatoesYT in the song, he is listing how the people before him did great things under harsh circumstances, so he feels like his problems aren't that big compared to the great things they did... but even so, he still needs help. "2 things can be sad," meaning one thing isn't necessarily greater than the other. Even though they had it bad, he still feels like what he is dealing with is valid. And he just needs someone to listen to him or one day he will explode. Ultimately everyone's journey is important, even though his violin is small in comparison... it doesn't mean he shouldn't have an audience.
I love the way the instruments blend into one another. In addition to soundng cool, it drives home the point that it doesn't matter what the instrument in the analogy is; it's not about the violin, or the trumpet, or whateer. If someone has something to say, it's worth listening to. I just love how the musicality matches the message of the song.
It's like the calm before the storm. The song is calm to listen, and the more you listen, you can hear it ramp up and things really go from 0-100 really fast
I love how everything in the backround effects the song. When the pictures fall theres a breaking glass sound, when pappers are flying around theres a wind sound, everything matches up and I love it. They put so much effort into their work and its amazing
This feels like the good old music videos back in the 2010's, good to know there's still some music videos out here that gives off the same nostalgic feeling of the old music videos
This song is literally the mood when you say your problems to someone and they just say "okay but there's someone somewhere who's living worse" I mean guys we don't care a problem is a problem even if it feels shitty compared to others we just want help and attention.
Exactly! The world's smallest violin is a clear metaphor for depression, with the song using music as a replacement for someone who wants to open up to others without feeling neglected.
My shitty problem is I'm in the hospital right now and the doctors and I dont know if it's my appendix or my gallbladder but I dont care, I'm in excruciating pain and I want it to go away
Yes, but he acknowledges it's not the biggest problem of them all. That makes it harder for him because he knows it might be kindof pointless and at the same time he needs to vent his stuff. :)

Time has flown by, hasn't it, bro? We were just kids having fun playing a multiplayer skateboarding game on the PS2. We were so innocent. Our lives changed. We discovered each new map. I remember it like it was yesterday. Four friends and I were playing. We couldn't get past the tutorial. When we did, it was so much fun. During that vacation, we learned how to play in a week. We started competing against each other. The game hasn't changed, but our lives have. The only things we have left are the good old memories of the old days. Times when we were truly happy, where life wasn't just an illusion. We were so young to know that we were living the peak of our lives. Everything was so simple, so fun, so good.
This feeling is caused when the brain gets nostalgic about similar things that are good, a long time ago. Your brain feels nostalgia, then gratitude. This always happens in every human because it’s how the brain breaks down the information, processes the information, then it forms a though
Theory; The Sentient Hat is holding the band hostage so that they can still make music and be there without any fans noticing they’re off. That’s why Jack never notices the living room fall apart; because he’s the one wearing The Sentient Hat.
@@luciomorning Exactly. Another reason why Jack has 7 copies of the Sentient Hat; (they’re all constantly updated with the same goals and memories regularly) so if something happens he won’t be able to tell his brothers for even a second before a clean hat is rebooted onto his head.
This song is an absolute work of art. The symbolism, the message. You can really feel the emotion of needing to be heard when your whole world is falling apart, and people don’t seem to find your story sad or important enough to pay attention to it. You feel guilty for feeling so horrible over “nothing” and it makes you feel even worse when you know people may be facing harder challenges than you, but you can’t help it. You want to be grateful, but you can’t come to terms with yourself. You know something is very wrong. When this song came out I could relate to it very well. I’m very pleased to say that I’ve made out of that point of my life and I’ve made so much progress. I still have some remnants of the bad habits and thought process I had a year or two ago. Of course still I have good and bad days when it comes to that, but I feel that now I can say that I’ve moving forward. Though sometimes I have to cut myself some slack and remind myself that the road to/of recovery isn’t linear. And I’ve learned that that’s okay. I also feel the need to say that if something is bothering you, you’re upset and anxious, or maybe even depressed about life, your feelings are *very* valid, and you will find what you’ve been looking for one day. Whether it be happiness, motivation, or even just a tiny spark of hope. If you keep going, you will get there. And to AJR, you three are fucking awesome. You’re music was one of the things that helped me out of a really rough point in my life, and I thank you. I thought I was running out of time, and that I was meeting my end. Little did I know that it’s just the beginning. I also went to one of your concerts a year ago. Not only can I feel less alone through your songs, but you perfectly described what I was going through with “the button”. It was like someone was verbalizing what I had been feeling for years and I couldn’t find the words to entirely express it to others. I am eternally grateful. Thank you for sharing your music and message with the world. 💖

It's easy to sing karma but with bang you can get out of breath fast
Both are hard!

their music is so healing for my trauma and depression. I didn't even know music like this existed until this song. thank you all for allowing me to have some happiness in my life.
That’s one of the reasons why I adore AJR, because they’re songs are relatable and mood changing In the best way
"Somewhere in the universe, somewhere someone's got it worse. I wish that made it easier. I wish I didn't feel the hurt." Is a line that resonates for me. It's a mantra of mine that "Just because kids are starving in Africa doesn't mean I wanna eat my broccoli." And it's nice to know that that's not just something that I think/feel.
That's exactly how I feel too, my parents were together and loving, so whenever I tried to open up about how I felt they almost made it seem like I was a jerk which is why I now relate to Humpty Dumpty
I think the message is no matter how small your problem is, you need someone to let it out or it'll grow on you and either destroy you or make you better. Hence "this could be the death of me or maybe just a better me"

As someone with a lot of army vets in the family, but who can't follow in their footsteps for health reasons, I thank you.

I thought this song was just about a violin.
Two types of people
@KingPotatoesYT in the song, he is listing how the people before him did great things under harsh circumstances, so he feels like his problems aren't that big compared to the great things they did... but even so, he still needs help.

Now, come in with the timpanis
And take a shot of Hennessy
I know I'm not there mentally
But you could be the remedy
So let me play my violin for you

i love this song
Nostalgia. I get it…..

But what about the umbrella?
@@luciomorning Touche
@@luciomorning Exactly. Another reason why Jack has 7 copies of the Sentient Hat; (they’re all constantly updated with the same goals and memories regularly) so if something happens he won’t be able to tell his brothers for even a second before a clean hat is rebooted onto his head.

まじでこれ聞いたら元気でる
That is one long message!
It's nice that they are getting the recognition they deserve
