      This, AND thank you all in the service partner community for sharing resources, despite misuse by some. I’m in the pre-training for service part of raising my service dog and I’m reading and watching a lot to learn what to expect and begin to help my pup avoid unwanted behaviors before they’re habits.

    Love how your tutorials all ways put the welfare of the dogs first.
    Always breaking the steps into bite size pieces with easy explanations & demonstrations making it much easier to remember and replicate at home regardless of experience.
    Thanks to your tutorials I Have a very close bond with my dog. Being a cavalier is naturally esspesally welcoming of fuss & pamper.

    I am currently training my Rottweiler at home and this series has helped us so much. My Luna came from a shelter and is a year and a half, but she's been very tuned in to my anxiety since we adopted her 2 months ago. She's already picked up on a few of my nervous habits and has already learned to distract me and redirect my attention with surprising consistency. Her focus out in public is our little hurdle atm but she is coming along nicely thanks to you!

    Someone grabbed my service dog's tail while we were standing in a checkout line at a grocery store... it took a while to work through his hyperviligence that resulted from that scare.
    This is definitely something that would have better prepared him for it!
    I'll definitely do these exercises with my next one.

      Yeah, I don't publicly speak about needing a service dog publicly in the dog community because it always ends in other trainers bulling me. But people have asked for this video and I know it will really help a lot of people and DOGS. Weirdly the most uncomfortable place to go with a service dog where people will give you their piece of mind without asking is a positive reinforcement dog training conference...

    Great video Emily. And as usual, I expect to see and hear exactly what you’re explaining. My SD Mason, is approaching retirement and I’m in the process of getting his replacement ready to take over. At times I feel sad that his duties are coming to an end because he really loves his job. I feel also blessed I’ve had him by my side for the past 10 years and he’s almost 12. The new one is a McNab and I chose this particular breed for their desire to work and not be as soft as my border collie, people don’t recognize the breed as quickly as the border thus giving me space needed without them asking to pat him etc. I am looking forward to watching your series on this important topic. Your caring and sharing is beyond a beautiful gift to others. I really can’t see how other trainers or non are anything but thankful there are people such as yourself who keep it about the dog. Thanks Emily

      Awe. If you can see Halo is very soft and sensitive which makes him so great on picking up slight changes in my behavior. I suggest doing at least 12 at the very minimum sessions with just yourself and other people the dog really really really trusts. Also, I like to think that every dog has a weakness but the weakness always is the reason for one of their super powers. And Ted Turner always says behavior is changeable if you take the time to change it. Also I have to say going through the motions of even having my brother do the invasive stuff in my yard was stressful for me, so it was really great for training me as well. I will go bug him an his girlfriend today to do another round of creepy hoverers, leaners and sneaky touchers.

      @@kikopup we do have a couple of collegues in the office that my dog gets super excited about meeting, so I will definitely nag them into helping us with this! He's in training to do similar tasks to a guide dog (as I am visually impaired/legally blind but not fully blind), so I will rarely let him greet strangers while he's working, but teaching him the concept that strange humans are'nt scary, will definitely help!
      I will also be using your tips for vehicle training when we're using public transport! My dog is very goal oriented, so he's usually mentally ten steps ahead when we're getting off the bus! lol

    I used to train on the military base with my father that was a lieutenant and his passion was dogs especially canine GSD dogs… I work with them from the time I was six years old to in my 20s… However that’s been many years I am now going on 70… I used to train service dogs… But I forgot… I am all over the place seeking help. I’m on a fixed income & Have to rely on my own resources that barely pays my rent. I was gifted with this pure bred GSD beautiful & smart puppy.. so thank you so very much for being on here and helping… I go through a lot of trainers.. that waste time, I love your training and getting straight to the point and giving examples because I am a visual person. So far you have been the best I pray that I don’t lose you but when you say stroll to the bottom for video or this or that I’m not seeing that on my screen. I recently through the Pandemic lost my 33-year-old daughter, my 17-year-old son, my best Childhood/Sister friend since 12 years old that brought me to San Diego. I was completely alone until I got gifted my love of my life.. “TYSON” Since my losses I have became disabled.. With anxiety, depression etc.
    I believe that God had brought Tyson to me not for me to train him well.. ( To become my (SERVICE DOG)
    But we rescued one another 💙💝
    And my memory is not the same, my cognitive thinking… I can’t follow through I find you as a good trainer… I come to RUclips and can’t find you again!!! 💔. I pray that I don’t lose you because you’re the best!!!

    I'm really looking forward to this series! Any tips on how to stop people from petting my little dog? She is very friendly and loves to get petted by anyone. She strains to get over to them and she stands up on her hind legs and "waves" at them with her front paws (so it's pretty apparent she wants to get petted). People just go "Ahhh" and come over and pet her and she jumps up on them. When I say something about that, they say "I don't mind". But I mind. I'd love to have the problem that she cares more about me! For her, petting is higher value than any treat.

      You can practice teaching the greeting as a behavior like in this video, but train when the dog is bored of the person at first and gradually increase the excitement of the greeting as the dog succeeds and repeat and repeat. You wont see any amazing results unless you really do at least 12 set ups with this exercise. You can also teach your dog a cue "leave it" from people like in this video ruclips.net/video/6jYfKK17ZBs/видео.html. You can then say to the person "maybe next time" that always seems to work for me because it wasnt as rejecting as "NO!" or just say to your dog "leave it" loud enough that they can hear as you walk away without talking to the person.

    • @AnnainAwe
      @AnnainAwe 3 года назад +1

      I'm teaching my dog he needs to look me in the eye and "ask for permission".
      I only give him permission 60% - 40% of the time.
      I'm also teaching him to put his body length between me and another person, facing me. This training in and of itself has done a lot to help him understand stepping out in front of me does not necessarily mean going to greet the other person.

And i would love to have him off leash when allowed of course but I'm afraid he might charge when someone talks to him. He is a rescue dog and he used to be very nervous but with positive reinforcement and a lot of training we have overcome many things. Is there a way to help him be more confident around people?

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 года назад +2

      Its best to get a trainer to help you so you can have lots of decoy people to work with. But basically its the same training as in this video where you would use people your dog knows first to do the training with then gradually move to strangers in a controlled environment. And when out and about keep the dog on a leash otherwise your dog could startle and it could set back the training.

    Hi, I am just watching your videos because I am going to be a puppy minder for a guide dog puppy so I want to refresh my puppy training skills. I was watching your video and noticed the cross body leash you are using (when you are getting the dog out of the back of the car and doing some of the stay by my side training. I saw that and realized I have a leash like that and never thought of using it as cross body. I am not even sure where I got this leash. So I have a question. I see you have the main portion of the leash cross body and the dog collar attached to the end. But there is another ring on the leash and it looks like you are using that somehow. Could you do a quick video or explanation of how you attach the leash. Or if you have that in another video, let me know where I might find that. Thanks.

    Hi, I am training a service dog border collie. When picking out puppy she fit all criteria. She alerted me when I have seizures. Have trainer teaching me. My border collie does all commands excellent. She 1 year 7 months. When entering store now her stress level goes up. She wasn't like that always. When she was attacked in class by a huge dog at 10 months she started to be stressed when in stores. How can I help her calm down in stores? Thank you. Love your programs.

    Thank you so much for all these service dog vids.
    I'm working with my boy, my first sdit in over 10 years. These are exactly what I need to get his behaviour and tasks from good to great.
    Any hints on mobility tasks? Like momentum pull, counterbalance, ect? I'm having an issue with training him to brace me (press against my leg) when dizzy or a pain flare strikes. Hes been medically cleared to do the tasks, but I cant figure out how to get him to put pressure on my thigh (whichever side I cue him to).
    He also wont hold an item, will hold his toys, but not items I tell him to take. Gives things on command no issue, even drops when across the room, but wont carry things like my med bag, or his harness/leash even 1 foot away. Any hints?

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 года назад +2

      I personally wouldn't unless you really really know the place and that they manage the puppies so they are not getting overly stressed or bullied or use punishment while in their care. THere is a great day care here in San Diego where everything is done carefully but then there are other day cares here where sometimes the dogs who go end up with tendencies to be reactive or aggressive.

    "this does not condone using this training for fake service dogs"
    *me sweating watching this video to get new training perspectives because i have a client who wants his dog service level calm in public*
    "-to bring in places service dogs are not allowed"
    Oh good i was going to feel really bad for a second haha.
    Also, I need to streamline the process. I can do it over time, but I usually work with abuse and aggression, not "poodle pup who wants to sniff strangers"
    Also I'm So hard on people with this. At the bookstore I'm quitting we get dogs. I saw a dog come in. went "OOOOHHH cuttteeeeee" Very quietly. The owner said "this is my ES animal" Which is fine, we don't have a rule, it's all used books. She was calm, quiet, she was focused on her owner half the time and kept her sniffing to what was within nose reach, didn't touch anything, heeled well, ignored strangers, listened instantly, clearly she didn't have a "job" job, but she was trained to do what was needed. A good girl.
    But the same dang day a guy came in with the CHEAPEST, FAKEST looking vest, like someone who'd never seen a SA vest made it from a description. Dog jumped on my counter, pulled the dude around, ignored him. BRO WTF.

Although there's someone who works at the clinic I go to who lives my dog sooooo much that I've literally just started taking his vest off to go on there so she can play with him 🤣
    I hate when random people interfere with him though, I often get people trying to get his attention and I loudly tell him to sit and stay, repeatedly sometimes as a hint to the other person, but they keep trying to call him over 0_o

    Do Australian Shepherds make good PSDs? I’m researching for my first one, to owner train, and I love Aussies, with many good long term experiences with them. But I read some conflicting stuff.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  2 года назад

      With any breed there is the service dog type in the breed and the one that is inappropriate. Even sd breeding programs have a 50% pass rate. Its all about picking the happy go lucky bomb proof personality, not so much the breed. For an aussie, you want to pick one that doesnt get frustrated easily in training and work, that has no reactivity fear or over excitement toward people dogs and things and is not anxious or over excitable in new locations.

    I go to college and at least seven people tried to touch my dog just today. I reach my hand out towards the human before they get close and say verbally for them not to touch my dog. Some will bully me or make noises at her while she’s working… Is there a way I could handle this better that would be more beneficial to my dog and also so people don’t feel like I’m being rude? I understand that people just get excited and some people don’t know but it really bugs me when I ask them to leave her alone and they keep staring, making kissing sounds, or trying to touch her when I’m not looking.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 года назад +2

      It really depends on your dog and your situation. For example you could work on your dog's tasks right away, and work on public access training in places dogs are allowed beginning at home and the yard and parks etc that are easy for the dog and socializing to people and dogs and sights and sounds.
