Hi John Different contact: semi-circle is an extra-ordinary metaphor. I will never forget now about as to how to set up myself for different height forehand. Excellent video. Good on you John!!!
Thanks for the feedback. The low ball technique doesn't apply to the topspin backhand. You can try it, but I am sure you find it to be awkward and weak. But let me know. Best, John
Exactly what I needed. Going to play on clay tonight, normally I play on carpet / synthetic turf which has lower bounces. So I have to keep in mind the medium to high contact point will be more frequent on clay.
@@PerformancePlusTennis Thanks, the match was great despite losing it. Unfortunately it took me an hour to get my timing right and the opponent was very solid. But I really enjoyed playing my forehands. I tried to run around forehands as much as possible, but this is one particular situation where I probably don't do enough in order to being able to hit at a higher contact point, especially when the moon ball is deep. So I was regularly jammed and had to back off quickly and let the ball drop to low contact point because I didn't have enough room to extend my arm for higher contact point. And of course it's not ideal to hit at low contact point when you are two metres behind the base line, so I have to work on this and sort it out, especially on clay, because I was losing the upper hand in rallies too easily. One thing I want to ask though is the different contact points from the side view. I understand why medium is more in front and the low is closer to the body. But why is the high ball also closer to the body? Maybe that's one thing I have been really doing wrong all my life and that's why I struggle with shoulder height forehands. I often hit the high balls too short or into the net even when I set myself up correctly in the left-right positioning. It might be that I try to hit them too much in front. Also a tip for you - that part of the video with the fence, where you graphically demonstrate the differences in the contact points, is the best. You should make a RUclips Short with that, it can reach more / different people than a regular video.
Hi Patrik, Thanks for the update and suggestion on the short...we will be doing that for sure! Regarding your question on the high contact: It's really a matter of maintaining the same posture and form in your playing arm for power and control.Hope this makes sense! Best, John @@patrikmarflak6559
@@PerformancePlusTennis Thanks. I think it needs a lot of practice, but I mostly play matches. My new year resolution should be more coach time :) Have a nice Christmas and keep up the good work!
i hope you do a demo on hittimg the high ball , this is my weakness, i always underestimate the distance of contact point from my body , as a result i cannot even hit the ball .
Hi, There are some demos in the video - 1 or 2 of me playing the shoulder high contact. Be sure you have an open stance, and challenge yourself to stay an arm's length plus 24 inches from the ball. Best, John
@@PerformancePlusTennis thank you for the guidance . i will try to look for your video mentioned , and will try to apply the tips you just gave here that might help me .
John, Thanks for this informative lesson. I know this is a forehand lesson, but I was just curious do the same concepts apply to the backhand contact points for a topspin backhand Thanks Victor
Hi Victor, Thanks for the feedback and great question! The short is answer is no, and I will explain and present in a video in the near future. Also, do you play a one or two handed backhand? Best, John
Looking forward to a video on backhand contact points. As a two hander, I only feel powerful in the medium height. Low ball I can make but I struggle with generating power and depth and the high balls are absolute nightmare. Either I let it drop to medium height or I run around it and hit a forehand. I wish I could crush short high balls with my bh, but it just feels awkward. I never learned the jumping backhand.
Hello, thank you very much, I watch your videos with interest and benefit from them very much. You touched on an interesting topic in this video. But I thought maybe one point was misunderstood. Considering that we hit with a straight arm like Federer, the distance between our shoulder and the point where we hit the ball is mathematically equal for all low, medium and high balls. It is about arm and racquet distance. However, the situation will be different if we compare the distances when we draw a vertical line from the point where we hit the mid-height ball to the ground and a parallel line passing through our shoulder, as explained in the video. In this case, the hitting distance for low and high balls is approximately the same and shorter than for a medium-height ball. In summary, I think that in the image like the diagram, the note for hitting high balls should be to the left of the mid-height ball, just like the point for hitting low balls.
Thanks so much for your comments and perspective. I’m glad my content is helpful to you. I understand what you are saying, but I think if you review the video again, and the contact point images of professionals, you’ll see at the shoulder high contact is the greatest distance for the body. It has to be because the point of radius is the shoulder. Best, John
