I Converted My Santa Cruz Bronson V3 Into a Mullet Bike!

  • The Santa Cruz Bronson has always been my dream bike, but after spending sometime on Hunter's 29ner, I stated to really like the pros that the 29ner brought. The one thing I didn't love was how big the bike felt and that's how I landed on a mullet setup. Surprisingly converting my bike to a mullet was pretty simple and didn't scrafice my geomatry with having the flipchip.

Very nice! I have a Bronson V4 which comes mullet and nothing can beat mullet for me. Being able to hang way off the back in a steep section is so nice. Also helps in the air with whips and other tricks. Over all you should love it. Can't wait to here your thoughts after you first ride.

That’s awesome! The new Bronson’s were a big inspiration for me in converting mine.

Nice! Hope you like the new set up 😊. I ride a yeti sb140 29er, and a Yeti SB160 29er. I had before a 5010 but I sold it. I think the 29er roll faster but 27.5 are still awesome! For me MTB is all about having fun regardless of the wheel size.

They keep the speed longer, smaller wheels accelerate better. Of course weight plays a role too, my bike is hevay so rolls slower until it picks up speed. I still have a 26er I should get rid of as it doesn't fit me and geo sucks, but one thing I like about how it rides is it accelerates super fast.so for short distances it's a fast bike. Only 12 kg too. Small wheels low weight, supe rfadt bike, but loses speed on long straights. Bu tof course appropriate gear ratio is needed. So larger cassette on larger wheels, smaller chainring. But on smaller wheels bigger chain ring, smaller cassette. So for pumptrack dirt jumping, city riding, 26er is great. For fast, gnarly terrain, and long distance riding 29er is better. 27.5 is between that. No better or worse set up if it fits the bike.
Tall rider can ge bigger frame so bigger wheels.

Hi, did you buy the fork with the same offset as original?

I have a 19 Bronson and might do
This. Is the level of effort a lot to do flip chip?

Definately recommend! It's probably the #1 thing I have done to my bike. I ended up taking it to my bike shop to have them swap out the fork, and also not knowing if they needed to do anything to the link. It's pretty easy to adjust the flipchip though! I believe all you have to do it loosen the back shock bolt and flip the chip around and tighten back and you're set!

Is that your normal seat angle or was it not adjusted after adding the 29er fork?

Wouldn’t you put the FlipChip into the Low setting so the bottom bracket height gets as close to the same as it was.
My understanding is that the 29er fork/wheel lifts the front and BB a little. So dropping the link into low drops the BB again.
How have you liked the conversion? Still pretty happy? Any other tweaks?
I’m looking to try this too on my V3

I don't want to misspeak, because I'm in no way an expert around this! It's my understanding that it raises the bottom bracket slightly, and puts the bike in a more upright position with the flipclip in the high setting. With the larger wheel upfront this this makes the bike really slack, and having the flipchip in high helps compensate for the large wheel.
I was so hesitate doing this to my bike, because I didn't want it to mess up the geo of the bike, and make it harder to climb on. So, so happy I did it though! I don't think I could go back to a full 27.5 now, lol. I feel so much more stable and find myself going down lines I would have normally avoid before. It's been awesome!

Oh yep, makes sense if you’re prioritising the head angle.
I’ve got an XL V3 here and a 150mm 29er fork to try on it.
I’ll try and get some geometry on it before and after. High and low.
For me was considering just the BB height change initially. If I find it’s too slack, then I’ll grab one of the adjustable headsets to bring it back to how it is supposed to be. Like the AngleSet or GeoShift.
Great to hear you’re loving it. I’ve been riding a Bullit as well, which is mullet, so I’m keen to see how this goes with my Bronson too.

    But why??

Bigger wheel gives better roll over, so makes getting over obstacles easier, and less rough, so smoother and fsdter over rough stuff, easoer on tech trails.
Smaller rear wheel gives better butt clearnace, so maked a huge difference for shorter riders who still want the roll over of a 29er at the front. But she already had the 27.5 rear wheel, but she added the 29er front wheel.
The smaller rear wheel gives more clearance. Some say they get better cornering. I've never tried it, despite my bike being made to do this. I have a Geometron G1, it uses chips in the seat stays. But 29er setup was nice for me. But bigger wheels accelerate slower, but they keep the speed longer. But my bike is hevay so slow acceleration due to that too. But downhill it's super fast, plows trough everything. But I think mullet setup is meant to be a best of both worlds, but it compromises rear wheel roll over. So no better or worse set up, it depends on wha tyou want.
I've tried other people's bikes with 27.5, but never tried a bike that fits me in 27.5 nor a mullet bike. No messed with my G1 set it up as mullet.

There are some articles on mullet set up. Several vids too. So look into it. It might tell you something I did not.
