Renault Duster 1.5 dCi Dynamique 4WD video

The Duster has been a big seller for Renault SA for very good reason. Fitting into the small to medium Crossover/SUV category and having the advantage of extremely competitive pricing.
There may be areas where the more basic and utilitarian Dacia roots show, but somehow this simply adds to the honest charm of the overall package. It may be a bit boxy and edgy in design, some hard plastics are apparent on the interior but this all adds up to an honest "Rufty-Tufty" appeal.
Renault have added some of their touches, particularly to the interior so there are lots of luxury touches and spec included.
Our test model was the only 4wd version in the range. Powered by the tried and tested 1.5L 4 cylinder turbodiesel that provides 80kW and 240Nm through a 6 speed manual gearbox. A drivetrain selector offers 2WD, Auto or lock options. I simply left the car in auto, allowing the electronic brain to judge conditions and decide which wheels required driving. Lock is there if you do venture off-road and I was advised to disengage the traction control if using this setting. Unfortunately, I did not get the opportunity during the test.
The 6 speed manual is quick and easy in use BUT, the gearing is extremely short in the lower gears requiring very quick shifts on pull-off. This could be a bit tiring when in commuting traffic situations. In top gear, the car cruises along very comfortably on freeways and open road. Overall, the car handles capably and safely and is very smooth and quiet on freeways.
The engine is renowned for superb economy and did not disappoint here returning 5.6l/ 100km for our test period. This did involve more open road cruising than usual but is still a great result. Obviously, the 4wd drivetrain and extra weight have a small effect on fuel economy. Personally, I believe that the extra safety net provided by the 4wd on wet roads and similar is worth the small penalty.
The 4wd is offered in Renault SA's middle spec level Dynamique, so the car is very well equipped overall. The standard touchscreen with navigation includes a reverse camera as well as cameras for showing terrain in front and around in off-road situations. The test car also had optional leather upholstery. Blind spot monitors in the mirrors are a good safety feature.
Another picky point of mine remains the extra stalk behind the steering wheel for operating the sound system. I find this rather clumsy in use and feel that these should be operated by buttons on the steering wheel by now.
Overall, the Duster has always impressed me as a package and this was the case once again.
The 4wd model is currently priced at R362 900 and this includes a 6 year/ 150 000km warranty and a 3 year/ 45 000km service plan.

Hello, 7 months later and I have a question… I’m looking at the 4x4 Duster and the Suzuki Jimny manual. Any advice?

Can't compare the two. By merely asking the question it means you have little (if any) 4 wheel drive experience. Hence my answer won't mean much to you 😥 Anyway, here it is: The Duster is a very attractive road vehicle made into a 4x4. The Jimmy is a mini 4x4 made into a road vehicle. The thing is, for an extra 50.000 Rand you can transform the Duster into a master class 4x4 (180+kmh top speed, 28cm ground clearance and full lockers). The Jimmy is best upgraded by buying a Fortuner or Everest. And even than, it won't take you where the modified Duster will, nor will it be so light on fuel... Not to mention the price. Been there tried that 👍

Hi Henlo. Firstly you are looking at manual vs auto. Its a close call, I would suggest you test drive both and often one will just feel like a better fit for you

Nice video sir .. I have Renault duster 1.5 Diesel 100bhp 2013 and it is an experience any diesel lover should have. The short gears with the turbo is like climbing the hill at 50kmph on 4th gear and will take you to 80 within seconds. Plus the suspension is what is no where found in any car till date.
