Oww! I hate cactus in me. Good job on the race, that is intense! Weird about the coconut water -- too much sodium, I can see that. I've never really raced until I did a quick fat DH race this year. More fun than I thought.
Yea, I really like having races to help keep me honest and try new things. It wasn't as much about having too much sodium as much as having to much chloride which commonly comes with the various salts you need ( sodium, potassium, magnesium ) but isn't used as quickly and so can build up when you are using the salts in your body and taking in new ones. Coconut water, because it is a naturally occurring product doesn't call out the chloride and I didn't account for it. Once I put my symptoms together and did some research everything started to line up.
What race did you do?

Not a "real" race compared to what you do, but first time for me :-)
Tried hard, had fun, has a finish line: real enough for me :)
Good on you for going solo and competing. I'm assuming you normally don't drink coconut water on your regular rides? I have zero interest in racing, competed in enough sports as kid to never want to do that again but I did enjoy the recap and wish you luck on your next ride.
Thanks Brian! I have drank it as a recovery drink after long rides but never in the middle of a ride.
Great job Jason! Did 24HOP solo a couple of times myself. It really test the levels of fitness and nutrition. My days of torturing myself are over. I'll stick to the 4 person teams. Like they said at the riders meeting. Cholla are little balls of evil. Hope to see you there next year!
I'm curious if 4 person teams really are easier. All I had to do was ride at a metered pace and eat ... repeat. With a 4 man team I would be worried that I'm expected to go at 100% every time it's my turn. We'll have to see how bad the bug bit me come October.
I've learned over the years to run my race, and not get to concerned with others results. Running 1 hour laps on a 4 person team will kill anyone. I treat it like a ride with friends. Super chill
That is a great attitude to have, right on! I generally don't try to win races as much as a I set a goal and try and achieve it, it's made me a happier racer.
Wow man...
Flat Coca Cola and pretzels help stabilize the GI track.
Oh sure! NOW you tell me ;)
Strong work. 24hop is no joke. I ran support crew for a few friends that rode in it. I hope to be able to ride in it next year.
Nice! Go for it, it was a unique experience.
Nice job and good on you for even attempting it. Are you doing Leadville next?
I have no plans to do Leadville, if/when I do a mtb100 it would probably be Telluride 100 or the Vapor Trail 120.
The issue with Coconut Water specific to you? I have never had any issues with drinking is through longer endurance rides
Congratulations on the race. Looks like you've done most of epic rides, which is your favorite. we did Carson last year and this and are looking at doing grand junction and white top this year.
I just moved here 3 months ago and live about 2 hours north of there, but have never ridden the area. Looks like a nice trail network. What trails were in the loop? Glad I don't like coconut water. Thanks and great job!
What we rode was pretty easy but I think there are harder trails out there based on the map. www.trailforks.com/route/24-hours-in-the-old-pueblo/. Looking 2 hours north you should have a few good rides around you, what have you found?
I primarily ride with my wife so it's pretty tame for her. Primarily San Tan Regional Park and the Useries. South Mountain is on my short list, which we tried once but she had to turn back. Hoping to ride part of the Black Canyon Trail in the next 2 weeks with a friend (rides a 429 trail) and spotting a car. That's 77.7 miles long and runs from Prescott to north of Phoenix along 17. I only get to ride once or twice a week so leg strength and stamina are my challenges right now with a 10-20 mile limit depending on terrain. And a couple years shy of 60 doesn't help! And I need to get rid of that Rekon 2.6 front... I have no confidence in it. Gonna try the DHF. Thanks!
Nice, I've never hit San Tan or Useries but I did do part of the Black Canyon trail and South Mountain while I was down there. Check back over the next couple weeks, those are the next videos to go up.
Already subbed, my friend!
