Interesting story so far. When you refill with coolant will you use the vacuum method to help insure you get a completely full system and , hopefully, no air bubbles trapped in the system?
Cracked coolant expansion tank is a pretty common issue on the 986, coolant can seep out. If you check behind the trunk carpet, you’d find evidence of coolant along the coolant hoses or on the actual tank. Also good to see no milkshake. Good luck!
The tank is intact. The cap was bad. Also I did not properly bleed the system when I refilled it. But I have done it many times where I just add coolant, drive the car, birp it, repeat, until it is full. This time I guess I did it wrong....
did you bleed the cooling system the lever next to the oil water cap. cracked head or head gasket will give you back pressure. Your 986 does look nice in white, I like the bumperettes on the rear bumper. we dont have those here in the UK.. wish you luck fingers crossed..GN
Fingers crossed is was just the AOS making the smoke. Was the old one very oily? And the vent lines? I recently changed AOS as the vent lines were very oily and split so needed replacing and decided to do the AOS at the same time (unknown history of the car). My car wasn't blowing any smoke or consuming oil before or since. Did you get a new cap? I had to replace mine, was a part no ending in 01, the latest version is 04. My old one was making a little condensation on the underside of the trunk lid too.
Say it aint so, man!!!! So far your prognosis looks promising. Feel like im watching 'Stranger Things' cant wait for the next episode, hehe. Good luck.
Sounds like it could be cracked coolant header tank …… possibly? If you’re having to keep topping up and the trunk is wet? I had similar recently but ended up being a faulty 04 coolant cap!
Cooling system incorrectly filled after pump replacement. Engine terminally overheated from an 'air locked' system. You cannot gauge the efficacy of a thermostat by sight, and you should never apply a direct flame to a thermostat, It is designed to operate in water, hence it should be tested in water. . . . "funky smelling oil", is usually oil that is burnt beyond it's limit of protective tolerance. It's blowing smoke, because you've destroyed the top end like a champ.
Hey, I don't half ass anything !! If I'm going to blow a motor, I'm doing it the best I can LOL While I unfortunately agree with you, I still want to test everything before I buy a replacement motor.
That's Zweck. 2 of my friends started the company and are kicking butt. They have pretty much all of my dream cars in inventory. zweck.com/ I "know a guy" so I got a t-shirt but not sure if they have them for sale. worth a call though.

I need to get one of those vacuum thingys to refill the coolant.
@@drolasgarage632 alternatively use a pressure tank to blow pressure in the other way and bleed it that way

Thanks. I did try bleeding it while I was driving. But will try it again. I agree, they look great in white.

Hello great information, where is garage located
Dania Beach, FL
time to swap in a 996 GT3 engine !!!!! I whould love to see that !! :D
won't fit physically and won't work electrically but otherwise it would be a beast !!!
Did you sell the motor out of your parts car?
Good luck! Hopefully it’s just something minor and the motor didn’t cook.
Yes, I sold that motor long ago. Once I verify if this one is toast I will look for another donor car.
