This is a great demonstration. Your block is so charming!
I totally agree with you that if you are making lots of these that a specialty ruler is an investment worth making. Might I suggest a more budget friendly ruler: Deb Tuckers Split REctangles It costs

This is sooooo helpful! I had no idea they didn’t work just like HSTs until I messed mine up and then couldn’t figure out what to do.

The blocloc ruler is a 26deg. angle, with the finished rectangle being 1x2 . (If the points go straight into the corners of the finished block, and your finished block is 1x2, 2x4, etc, then that is always a 26deg. bias seam, no matter the size) If your angle is sharper, your unit will be longer and that little amount of extra in the seam allowance will increase a tad. I love the way she shows you how to use a regular ruler and includes a couple of different sizes. I've been making bias strip units and just yesterday realized I can now make units on any bias angle and not lose points. The star block she has is beautiful and very precise!

I love HRTs but the the only time I tried it was ugly. I now feel ready to try again and I sure do love that star block you used for your example…great design, great fabric choices.

how much larger should you cut so that you have enough to trim to the size you want? Thank you--good tutorial!

Curious if there is a reason you are allowing for an 1/8" vs. a 1/4"? I assuming it will work the same way if I choose to leave a 1/4"

The math works different on a Half Rectangle Triangle vs a Half Square Triangle. The 1/8'' is so that you everything will match when you use a a 1/4'' seam allowance.

You'll know you have the blocloc ruler placed correctly if the printed logo is on the "low" side, away from the pressed seam. Then it nests correctly.

Your about to ut 4" wide by 7 1/2 " long. You're emphasizing the 1/8th mark over to the end on the 7 1/2 inch line on the ruler. This confuses me because your ruler is not lined up with the top of the fabric????????????/

Ouch, I won't pay 100$ for a couple of rulers when it can be done another way. Thanks for showing it 🤗

The two ruler set is only $54 but yes, totally possible without the rulers! Good luck!

I would recommend spending $22 and getting Deb Tuckers Split Rects tool. It cuts and trims perfectly. I don't mind spending money on ruler- (particularly for an oft-made block, but I don't find that Bloc Loc offers a good value. I had to make many of these units for a quilt project that demanded precision. Deb's tool served me well. I go the extra step and cut my units from rectangles as demonstrated here, and it speeds the process.
