I love the relationship between Rodney and Shepherd they just rounded each other off really well and that slight Bromance going on is awesome one with the times that they were at each other's throats then they came to see eye-to-eye on things and even had the same line of thought
I have to agree with you on your comments about the "Geni". (DISCLAIMER- Im still on season 1 on SG.A. so my opinions are only related to the 1st season. Who knows I'll probably have different opinions later in the show. I hope thats the case) I think they could have had more potential with the Geni if they would have left them as allies rather than just using for some quick episode filler drama. I guess my biggest criticism with the group on SG.A is that, with so much military personnel that went with them to Atlantis, especially a few high ranking officers, you would think that after the first time they got their Asses handed to them while on another planet dealing with people like the Geni, they would have decided stop venturing out so woefully unprepared in such small numbers, without having some some well armed backup in an extra Jumper waiting within radio distance always listening in incase they become incapacitated. Or, at the very least someone waiting behind at their ship to guard it so it or the supplies on board dont get stolen, and to keep tabs on them through their radios and keep communications open with Atlantis incase Backup is needed. Once, maybe twice is acceptable, but it gets frustrating when characters just will not learn their lesson. After the time they got back from the Wraith ship with the Geni Commander and he tried to Double-cross them because Teyla "allegedly" left Tyrus to die. but Major Shepherd had the other 2 jumpers there in the sky waiting, that was an Awesome Moment and I thought "Great! This Major Shepherd is going to be an awesome Commander who adapts and always tries to stay 1 step ahead of his enemies!". After that situation, it should have been the New Atlantis Commandments to never leave for a Mission in small numbers, unprepared and Without any contingency plans for hostile natives, lost communication or missing personnel etc.. Its just getting a little old watching Major Shepherd, Teyla, McKay and Ford, after the attempted take over of Atlantis, the times they were double-crossed, sold out to the Geni, held hostage and robbed at gunpoint, and yet, after everything they've been through, they still just hop through the Stargate onto an unfamiliar planet inhabited by complete strangers, and only a few hours after meeting these strangers, they drop their guards and skip right on into any situation with their pants down and backs exposed, like 4 bumbling idiots just asking for it to happen to them again and again and again. without having some some well armed backup in an extra Jumper waiting within radio distance, or at the very least someone waiting behind at their ship to guard it and to keep tabs on them through their radios and keep communications open with Atlantis Even without any of the soldiers that came with them from earth, between the Athosians (Teyla's people who are now also on Lantea on the mainland & in Atlantis with the Group) & the Hoffans or any other Allies against the Wraith the Group made , they should have been able to get some kind of extra Manpower or at the very least maybe hired some Mercenaries for backup. That way whenever they go out on their different missions they can stop ending up in these very predictable situations where they're outnumbered, overpowered and unable to defend themselves or complete the mission. They're continuously getting tricked, double-crossed, taken advantage of, stolen from and ultimately coming back empty handed. Which is technically a net loss because of all the time and resources each mission takes Thats the thing I really liked about "Stargate Universe", they had at good amount of well trained, well armed disciplined soldiers who could respond to security threat. Colonel Young in "SG.U" was a hell of a Commander and definitely not the kind of guy you want to go up against.
I have to say the last episode has added a little bit of the military strength that the Group in Atlantis so desperately needed. Of course theres always that new Commander that shows up and relieves the Doctor of her command and doesnt utilize the group like he should, drunk on his own ego of course. Still watching the episode so hopefully the team pulls through.
I was incredibly ashamed of this Show. There was so much so hard wrong with all this Shit. SGU was overall a fucking shame and the extremly wrong direction for the Franchise, but this Shit was really crazy.
McKay is an amazing character. Some of the ways he makes major mistakes and struggles with it are something you don’t see often in tv. Really felt for him sometimes
yea, carter was to much like super woman. they really had to dial her back through the series..... same with tealc being a god basically cant die lol. atlantis was just more grounded all around. they had to deal with their mistakes...... unlike so many times in SG-1
Maj. Lorne: Wow, you must really be some kind of genius. Dr McKay: Well, as a matter of fact I ...eh, wait a minute, why would you say that now? Maj. Lorne: Something has to have kept Col. Sheppard from shooting you all this time.
I think this is because his introduction in SG-1 portrayed him as somewhat as a bad guy, in that he wanted to erase Teal'c in order to get the stargate up and running again because of his arrogance. You were supposed to dislike him for that.
He was meant to be a disliked one-off character. He replaced the originally cast "difficult guy" and can see how they adjusted the character. Was a star in this show
It's the same reason we hated Woolsey in SG-1 and loved him in Atlantis. We got see a somewhat villainous and problematic character come into their own. Woolsey went from the conniving politically motivated grand-stander of the IOA to the dedicated, charming new civilian leader of the Atlantis expedition. McKay went from the sacrifice anyone and anything, care about no one scientist to the rough, hostile, yet unmistakably lovable, hot headed scientific explorer of the Atlantis team.
I was incredibly ashamed of this Show. There was so much so hard wrong with all this Shit. SGU was overall a fucking shame and the extremly wrong direction for the Franchise, but this Shit was really crazy.
I really loved the way Woolsey was given immense personality and character building from the moment in SG-1 where he was giving his report to the President but refused to compromise himself and his duty even if it meant it would cause him troubles. Rewatching the whole SG-1 and SG-A a second (or third) time knowing how Woolsey's character progresses is a whole different and pleasant experience.
The episode where Beckett died absolutely broke my heart. And what was really tragic was how McKay blamed himself. It's very relatable when tragedy happens and you find ways to blame yourself out of grief when in reality there was nothing you could have done. One of the saddest but best episodes.
Ye, but then they completely ruined the artistic integrity of the death within the story by bringing him back as a clone! Anytime anyone ever dies, fuck it, just bring them back as a clone! No tension, no long lasting impact, just clones and ascension/decension! It makes it boring.
Kris Williams yeah the clone was not the best idea but it did lead to some good stories. But that was indeed in the later seasons so the clone wasn't there for very long.
screw that. we wanted him back. While it was well done, and his replacement was good too, still sucked to lose him. He became a series regular because fans loved him so much.
Kris Williams it’s different because the clone has different memory’s from the season 2/3 episode he got created around, I get not liking them bringing a character back, but they made it clear that the character who died was a different person to the clone
I would have loved a scene where they do the usual "general... general" and someone turns to wolsey and says "doctor" then he looks panicked for a second and corrects them saying he's only got a masters or something
In one of the commentary tracks they talk about how hard it was to create a villain for Stargate. You had to create villain powerful enough to be a credible menace but dumb enough to be defeated week after week. With the Wraith, Gu'ould and Ori they really did a surprisingly good job with a really hard task.
One of my favourite moments from Stargate Atlantis is the ending of Harmony (season 4) when a painting is unveiled that shows Mckay bravely fighting off the enemy while Sheppard cowers in fright.
I liked how Rodney and Sheppard's friendship helped reveal the fact that deep down Sheppard while a badass had a lot more in common with Rodney than first glances reveal.
Rodney McKay had some of the greatest character development I have seen. It started in the episode with the creature that feeds on energy, Rodney discovers a device that makes him invincible... but also prevents him from eating or drinking. It only comes off when the user wants it to come off, so when they suggest he be monster bait due to being invincible... off it comes. This then leads to a moment where, realizing that he is the best hope for the survival of everyone else, he puts on the device (with a reference to Superman) and lures it through the gate. As we saw, in Grace Under Pressure, he noted the sacrifice of someone else, and had to rely on his intellect to get him out. This is one of Rodney's greatest flaws: he's often the smartest person in the room, and he knows it. This is highlighted in The Shrine where he slowly loses his intellect, and he is aware of it. You can see how deeply this cuts him, when one of the other members refers to him as "Doctor McKay": "I'm "mister" McKay. Doctors are smart. It's "mister" now." We see him show humility again in the episode where he is enhanced by the Ancient device. His abilities go straight to his head. However, when he realizes he's on a one-way track to Ascension (and death), he basically goes on a "if today was your last day" montage, apologizing for his actions, aiding his friends, and trying to clear his conscience before the end.
Just recently I have re-watched the entire 5 seasons of Atlantis, after a 10+ year pause since they last aired, and I have to admit I was baffled of how well they hold up. I watched it as a teenager and found it interesting and different of everything else that was on TV at the time (where I live we don't get a lot of sci-fi or fantasy entertainment unless you watch alternative cable channels and my house didn't have it for the longest) and now re-watching it I marveled at how solid the writing, characters and episodes are!
It immensely pisses me off that Atlantis didn't get its originally intended final movie or a followup season. But hey, that's Stargate for you, an IP that's been horrifically mis-managed since the beginning. My only hope is that somewhere down the line it gets something of a soft reboot/relaunch to either replace Universe or expand on what it left behind. Sadly what's more likely is that the books will be adapted, crash and burn because they're crap, then Stargate will be put on ice for another ten years.
From what I've seen so far regarding Stargate Origins (The mini-series you mentioned) it's gonna be bad. 1. The nazis are the bad guys. I mean seriously, Stargate in the past has always managed to be a kind of "Fuck yeah USA" show while also not disrespecting other countries in the process (The amazing Colonel Chekov comes to mind) and now they go for full on cartoon caricature nazis with thick german accents 2. One of the coolest plot points in the first few seasons was the fact that the American military managed to activate the Stargate prior to the "first" activation in the original movie, but lacking understanding of the technology they sent one man through, Ernest Littlefield the fiance of Cathrine Langford (Arguably one of the most important characters setting into motion the events of Stargate) who was then discovered to be still alive after 50 or so years, now in the new series they show the Stargate open with Cathrine in front of it at a young age which just completely goes against everything both the movie and the series established. I feel the new Stargate series is going for the same tone as The Last Jedi, fuck everything that came before in favor of far left ideology.
Yea SG gets a Reboot.... They throw everything away that happened in both Shows (ok 3) and begin again with the lame borring Concept Emmerich had at beginning. I will not watch it, because I must say. The Original Film was lame.
It is... it is wrong, in my opinion to do that mini series with nazis and so. Gate was discovered in 1928, Hitler get to power in 1933 if I am not mistaken, war... they just messed with time line for no good reason.
Now imagine this. Damn, it's 10 years ago. Life-long SG1 fan, Atlantis is like in it's third season or something. TVs here in Czech Republic almost given up on the franchise, so we had to VPN and torrent our ways to the show. (Remember, way before Netflix and stuff...) Yet, there was this annual nerd convention every year and that year I went because David Nykl (Zelenka, Czech character) was a guest there. Damn I still have his signature somewhere.
Loved Stargate, especially Atlantis. I feel like it could have had one more season in which the cast has to decide whether or not to return to Pegasus and resolve their unfinished business with the wraith. A lot of the characters had connections back in the other galaxy, especially Teyla. Not to mention the strategic advantage of having a (now fully mobile) beachhead against the distant but very real threat of the wraith.
Vegas is a brilliant episode with an incredible soundtrack . I was so cut up SGA was cancelled it took me about a year to bring myself to watch it and the finale.
The episode that sold me on SGA was "38 minutes". I thought it was amazing how much world-building and character development they could smash into one episode which took place almost entirely in the back of a jumper.
I actually didn't like his character at all on Atlantis. As if they were trying to copy Teal'c but left out his stoic humor. Khal Drogo was much more interesting due to the sheer magnitude of his brutality and guile, but still seemed like Jason was more or less playing the same character. It wasn't until Aquaman that I saw him do something else for a change and made me not hate their reimagining of Aquaman.
I disagree I didn't want a copy paste of Tealc he stands alone as a character. But they did need the tough guy with knowledge of the enemy and they got it with Ronon
@AussieBlokeGordo "Need"? Did they though? His character was so bland and cliché he could've not been there and it wouldn't matter. I didn't want a copy/paste of Teal'c either, but that's what they tried and failed to do. Besides, they already had Teyla as their resident wraith expert. Ronon was just big strong silent guy overdone trope. Worf of Star trek and Tyr of Andromeda do a better job.
As a dual citizen who used to be a military wife, McKay's Canadian jokes and the mixture of more civilian aspects with the military, made me prefer Atlantis as well. Also, I ate up anything "meaning of life" stuff on the show, so having it be the Ancients' base originally made the show fascinating to watch! I love Stargate so much, discovered it via Netflix years ago, and am currently rewatching with my husband who never saw it. On sg-1 season 3 and can't wait for the Atlantis part of the series!
You mentioned that you could do a whole episode on Rodney McKay. I’d love to see that come to fruition. I’d make a decent sized donation if you could. He was my favorite character across all 3 series.
This review brought back fond memories of watching the show for the first time and being completely swept up into the story, characters and universe. Thanks mate :')
I always wanted to see a possessed Asgard. I kind of assumed Ra had an Asgard host in the past , because of that flashback we saw in the original movie which showed Ra as an asgard type of creature before he found the humans , and also saying that he's from a dying race (like the asgard)
+Anitogame that could almost be a whole story arc, they try and infiltrate the wraith but when they try and take over a queen, she fights back and destroys most of the wraith-goa'uld. Then one of the remaining wraith-goa'uld could have struck a deal with a queen for wraith soldier bodies (as they're pretty dumb and disposable) in exchange for technology. As far as space-faring civilisations go, the wraith are pretty backwards and would have no hatred of the goa'uld as they couldn't eat them.
I feel that if it was done right and a powerful symbiot like Ra, or one with the tenacity like Ba'al, it could have worked brilliantly. And seeing what the symbiot would do to a wraith body would have been interesting
+Major Grin Actually, Ra being in an earlier, not as degraded, Asgard clone (the Asgard Famrir specifically) is exactly how SG-1 explained away the movie discrepancy in the Stargate SG-1 Roleplaying Game.
I loved all of the Stargate shows, and one of the few shows that I've watched every special feature that was released on DVD. Hewlett was great fun, one of his solo projects "A Dogs Breakfast" I really liked but left me feeling confused, he used a few of his castmates from SG for it and as such I kept thinking it was an alternate reality episode and kept expecting it to wind up back at SG command.
I absolutely love this show. I'm currently reading the Legacy series, which follow up on the show's finale. And I'm enjoying them quite a bit. Of course it would be better to have the show back but it's at least something to do when I realize how much I miss the show.
I love the scene you showed of Raddick and Rodney, but I wish you had kept the initial opening to that scene which is equally as touching. The part where Rodney walks in and Raddick says, "Rodney I don't care what you say, I'm going to keep working on this. You saved my life." Those two lines alone struck me with more feels than an entire season of novelas.
I would also add “Trinity” to the McKay list. Watching him face the consequences of his ego and learning that he isn’t infallible made for some great character growth.
SG-1 and Atlantis was awesome; I’m re-watching the latter right now. SG-U had some cool ideas, actors (Begbie was the bomb) and episodes, but it was too dark and slow for my taste.
I think the darkness of SGU was good, different, they really needed something new. It should have been OK to walk that new way, but it seems like the producers weren't satisfied enough. "it had only 12% more views than the average evening program" ... it is like Square Enix not being satisfied with TombRaider selling 7mio copies. (currently 11mio)
12 percent over the average is a substantial amount for a niche science fiction series, granted the same producers saw fit to cancel Dark Matter, another great science fiction show. and Syfy wonders why people don't take their channel seriously.
I felt like Universe took itself too seriously. Too much "deep" dialogues in sterile ship rooms and not enough exploring new planets races and technologies. Maybe if was just a slow start and they had great thing planned for season 2 ... we shall never know.
I didnt mind sg-u but i would have like some funnier/cheerier moments to break up the darker ones. Also wish we got some more answer about the purpose of the ship and whether the crew discoveried the "message" or ever found their way home.
I would love to see you comment on the Stargate bad guys. My choices for the top six would be: 6. The Genii 5. The Goa'uld 4. The Wraith 3. The Replicators 2. The Ori 1. The Aschen Although they only appeared in two episodes ("2010" and "2001"), the humorless and seemingly benign Aschen gradually manage to exterminate the populations of every planet they touch, including Earth, through their subversive and non-confrontational "help". The parallels between the Aschen and feminism are astonishing once you start to notice them. The only way to defeat the Aschen was to avoid them.
+Broken Drum. Like feminists, the Aschen are hegemonic, humorless, vengeful, and seek to stop women from childbearing. Man, you have a serious lack of categorical reasoning skills.
+TheBibo Sez I'm sorry but WHAT!? I know plenty of feminists with a sense of humour, that have children/are pro children, as for the hegemonic... how are they the ruling class? I think you've proven my point that you have a messed up view of feminism. You could more easily say the Aschen are like the patriarchy, trying to control the world through controlling reproduction, you only ever see their men in positions of power, they're combated by feminists (in 2001 it's Carter and Doc Fraisier that first realise they're a threat, and then in 2010 it's Carter and her political ally that manage to stop them destroying earth) oh and they control key points in the planets infrastructure. You can say what you want about my "categorical reasoning skills" dude, but if that's the way your logic works, I ain't gonna take any notice.
Feminism in academia is so bad that comics will no longer perform on campus. Feminists are hegemonic in that they seek to colonize every available space including bathrooms. They are the ruling class in that their #MeToo accusations bypass the legal system to destroy any man they dislike, often for committing no crime at all. 1st wave feminists were noted for being pro-eugenics and this continues today with their support for birth control, abortion and childlessness as well as their condemnation of traditional motherhood roles and the family.
Wow, you missed the very best episode of SGA, namely *McKay and Mrs Miller.* Not only did this episode let us see how his personality also imposed on his family, but let us marvel at how a scientist of today (his sister) would respond to being "beamed up onto an intergalactic spacecraft, whisked off through subspace to another galaxy to help with an experiment... that goes wrong and yanks in yet another Rodney McKay (with a different personality) from a parallel universe". This episode was awesome beyond belief. And yes, I too enjoyed SGA a bit more than SG1, but also agree it had the extra benefit of being so well established. Nonetheless, I loved your review and pretty much agree with everything you said.
I too enjoyed SG:A but I never could get over how the city itself was never fully utilized. I understand the cost reasons for not wanting to build a lot of different sets but in the first couple of episodes I was convinced that they would be exploring this city which is the size of Manhattan and finding untold Ancient treasures. But sadly except for the gate room and a couple of meeting rooms and quarters there was very little of the city ever on display nor critical to the episodes. Even after 5 years the actual content of the city remained much of a mystery to the audience.
Your assessment of Atlantis is spot on. The Las Vegas episode is 1 of my favorites because it is smartly written. As far as characters go, Rodney is my favorite as well.
I remember there was a scene when Rodney McKay refer to Ronon Dex as Conan. I've always wondered if that was just a coincidence or if they knew about the Conan reboot.
I prefer SG1 overall, especially the later stuff, but Atlantis was really great too. It sucks so much that it was cut short because of the franchise-killing Universe.
@@themindfulmoron3790 He meant the SG Franchise in general. I was excited when they annouced a new SG Series and i know that most of the TV Shows don't have a great first season but man, that was awful to watch. It felt more like a soap opera than a Sci-Fi show. My problems with the series began just in the first episodes. And i wanted to give the show a chance but after a few episodes i switched it off
Of course Weir wasn't missed, if it had been anyone else besides Col. Carter who replaced her then Weir would've been missed. Carter was missed when Woolsey came on board, but Woolsey had such good character development over both series.
The Shrine is my all-time favorite SGA episode. It gives me the feels. :) SGA is also my favorite Stargate series. I miss you Stargate! Hope to see you on TV again someday...
I thought the scene where he acknowledged how Griffin was the braver man (and how it didn't seem right that Rodney survived and Griffin didn't) was a great bit of fan service. It's so easy for these moments to seem like "meh, an unknown character died but we don't care because our heroes are saved" so I appreciated the weight of that scene. It felt genuine and was the sort of reaction these shows could do more of when losing lesser known characters in dramatic moments.
Dave - You mention an SG:U video and I spent a lot of time searching for it. I enjoy your thoughtful commentary and was really looking forward to your take on SG:U I liked it a lot and was disappointed that its potential was never realized in full.
Not sure which I like more, this or SG1, but it might be SG1. Atlantis is still a great show, I love the way the two shows cross over and you see characters in both. Of course, Rodney is the best, especially when he's such a wimp when hes in trouble, but then so full of himself afterwards. One of my favourite episodes is 38 minutes, also the one where Rodney is hallucinating and he sees Major Carter, brilliant. I love the space battles and the Daedalus ship, commanded by Caldwell (Mitch Pileggi) It's great every time he shows up.
You like my two favorite McKay episodes. Grace Under Pressure and Tao of Rodney are great at defining who the character is, as well as showing off the skill of the actor.
The Wraith provide more horror than the Goa'uld? You mean, a few seconds of being soul-eaten, versus an ETERNITY of having a sadistic snake stuck in your head and controlling your every move?
As far as existential threats go, the wraith are more powerful, more intelligent and more numerous and defeated the ancients, I'd be more afraid of someone who dethroned the apex civilisation.
I love to finally hear someone who also prefers Atlantis to Sg-1, I agree with you on all points but one, I actually really liked Fords' storyline, even if it wasn't all to well fitted into the first two seasons. I was wondering if you had the time to read the Legacy Books? I find at least the first six books to be a nice continuation of the show, most of all Rodneys' and Todds' storylines,. While Rodney was developed very well in the show, I thought the Wraith were a wee bit too 2- dimensional. If you haven't read the books, I implore you to read at least the first one, it's worth it. Anyways, one last question, will you be watching the new Stargate Origins show? I think the first three episodes look a bit fishy, since they are only 10 minutes long. I don't feel the invoke the Stargate feel very well. I would be curious what you think of the new show! (Also, thanks for making me cry by showing the clip from Tao of Rodney, one of the saddest episodes in the series)
David Hewlett - the reason why Atlantis scripts were 10-20% longer than a regular 43min show. He delivered his lines at such a rapid pace, and his enthusiasm extended to the rest of the cast. The producers found early on they were running out of dialog to fill the time slot. So what's after the SG universe? Star Trek? Babylon 5?
Of I forgot. Of course David Hewlet and Jewel Staite were the best charachters in my thinking. Rodney and Jennifer Keller were actually characters I really like. It strange how Jewel Staite always seems to get those characters that your instantly just likes. :-)
4:40 - Oh yes... Mckay is one of my favourite TV characters ever, portrayed enormously well by Hewlett. You are right on point with the description there.
Oh yeah, The Shrine was propably the best Atlantis episode...really. You wouldn't see such a episode anymore in this day and age. SGA could be funny and serious in the right situations. And that episode had godlike balance of these two aspects. It was very well shot and the acting of David was top notch. I tear up every time I see it just by how good it was acted. You REALLY felt for the characters. As I said before...you wouldn't see such acting anymore in this time.
Couple of gripes, here. 1: its Lt. Col. Shepard, not Col. Shepard. 2: How do you consider the Wraith more horrific than the Goa'uld? The Wraith will eat you. The Goa'uld will make you watch the shit they do with your body. They're almost like the Borg in that respect.
Great for the most part till half way through season 4 where it went to pot and then with a god awful mini series ending. That first season though was one of the best things I’d ever seen
A few months ago I dedicated a few weeks of my life binging on the Stargate Series, After indulging in the original SG1, I found myself followijg a a new story arch a welcome move. I've found that Atlantis overs a whole new direction for the science and the story, Loved the continuation of Universe. Wish that show could have listed more than a year. So much better than the Star Trek franchise. Just my opinion.
Indeed. Babylon 5 was a great show also, with an epic multi-season spanning story arc. It wasn't afraid to tackle spirituality and treat religious people with dignity and respect, despite being a space based sci-fi show set in the future. I really respected it for that.
Dated effects which were better than the TNG and DS9 effects. DS9 actually switched the to the same methods B5 pioneered. They are no more dated than TNG and Ds9. The reason you don't see it is B5 is not being played anywhere because the dicks at MGM refuse to syndicate so as not to be proven wrong for cancelling it.
Ok, am sorry about spamming now, but I had to say this too. What I like about both Star Trek and Stargate is that women and men seems to be able to work together. The writes succeded to wrote story lines where men doesnt need to get weaker, to let the women look *cough* STD *cough* Stargate had really strong female characters that kinda felt real, and strong. And it never felt cringe. Then Atlantis comes around, and Teyla Emmagan gets to be. Sure she is a strong woman, but to me in a sense to strong. She could kick even the trained Colonel Shepards ass, if she wanted. Ok, we did learn that Colonel Shepard would never give up (just like O'Neill) when its a real fight, and that would mean she would loose that real fight. But when its just playing around, she always win. So in a sense that corrects my issues with Teyla. But she was kinda so strong they had to get Ronan that is the only man that could kick her ass all the time. In the same time she is soft, and polite. I do have a problem with her character, but in the same time I do like her character, because of her softer side. Stargate Universe though. There they did actually got to how men and female are in reality kinda. Men are strong, females are in a sense kinda weak. And everyone backstabbing eachother. lol. To be frank, in a sense its a ship with not the best people on. A shop with loosers. Dr. Nicholas Rush, a scientist no one likes. Colonel Everett Young The highest militiray ranking officer, that people dont really trust because he has is issues. Lt Mathew Scott a young inexperienced soldier that likes to "fuck" around litterary Chloe Armstrong that teen that thinks she is important because she is her fathers daugher who was a senator. And when she finds out, she actually is a useless memeber of that crew. Eli Wallace the wizkid and to be frank the only member that that actually is a great character. He is really in the right place, but thinks himself his is not. So the only character that thinks down on himself, instead of believing he is on the right spot. Lt Tamara Johansen again a female thats kinda weak, well it looks that way though. She had a relationship with Young that didnt go well, and was in a bad place and was about to leave the military and was in asense forced into it all again. Seargent Ronald Greer The soldier that probably could rape and kill someone, if he cant fight. Ok, probably wont rape, but this man has really big issues. So and all the rest is the loosers as well. I mean a show full of loosers except 1 Eli Wallace. Ok Nicholas Rush is also no looser when it comes to his intelligense and so on, but his socialskills needs to be improved. So in a sense that was what that show was about. The show a bout members that really was force to raise themselves to levels they normally wouldnt be. A plot full of intruiging around the members. Kinda like a soap in space. lol. Or Lost. It was actuall improving, and the second season was actually not bad at all. Sadly MGM got problems financially, and both Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe had to fall thanks to it. But if you think about it. Star Trek is kinda in a similary state today. TOS, TNG, DS9, STV and STE is all about crews that are in the right place. They earned their rankings in Starfleet. And then STD comes around. A shop full of people that seems to be missplaced. The feeling of the show is more like a soap. And no one in the crew seems to be there on their own merits. Sure the Mirror universe escapades made them in a sense raise to the ocation, and at the moment feels more like a star trek crew should be like. But Both STD and SGU are made in the same way. Darker tone, people who in a sense are insecure about themselves, not the right people and so on. Lets put them into space. lol.
Indeed, Stargate pulled off strong female characters - how? They gave them a believable skillset (Samantha Carter for example is a brilliant scientist, but she had to go to the Air Force Academy for that and she's a good soldier, too but she's not better than O'Neill just because she's a woman and can of course beat up men left and right!) and they allowed them to show doubt and weakness (Sam grieving for Daniel when he ascended, Weier not being sure about command decisions etc.) and they gave them flaws, too (Sam's love for technology and science that makes her nearly unable to take time off and relax for example!) Well, I don't think SGU did women justice and neither did it it men! Young is a maniac that shouldn't command a radar station in Alaska! In fact he should be in Leavenworth for attempted murder, conduct unbecoming an officer (beating up Telford, fucking a subordinate - note: That's exactly what Sam and Jack never did, despite the fact that they could probably pull if off if they are careful - and generally being unfit for command!)...women may have less upper body strength, but otherwise they make reasonably good soldiers (hand to hand combat is a niche of the battlefield today and a bullet from a women - hell, even a child! - is just as deadly as one fired by a man), especially if they operate long range weapons, drive vehicles or fly planes! Both STD and SGU try (and fail IMHO) to take a piece of the grim-dark-nBSG-pie, not to mention that STD is agenda (SJW-Female-Supremacy-Men-Are-Worthless) pushing big time (nobody would name a child "Michael" if it's a girl, that name isn't unisex, not to mention that someone so emotionally volatile (she's more or less a traitor and should IMHO be put to death, because that happens to traitors in war!) can't have grown up on Vulcan, because frankly: She'd kill herself, being surrounded by emotionally distant/suppressed Vulcans!) ps: Yeah, only Sam as an example, but I remember her best - she is after all my most favourite Stargate character, before Daniel, McKay, O'Neill etc. (despite the fact that I am a guy...then again: I had a crush on her in my teens, hell I still wouldn't throw her out of the bed because I like her looks (loved the short hair on the show, that radiats confidence IMHO and I love tomboys who'd rather burn a dress than wear it!))
Yes, that what i ment. The women on SGU wasnt strong, but the thing is, men wasnt either. As I said Only one person was actually a good person and someone that was on the right place and that was Eli. Probably would Scott work too, because he was young and could learn. But Eli was in fact the only person good enough to be in the Stargate-program. His flaw was mostly that he felt he had to help his mother, and selfesteem. But he was likable. The other is almost like in STD, not really likable. But To be honest. I did kinda accept them, and in a sense liked SGU when I accepted the tone of that show. SGU wasnt a show about the best of the best and right people on the right place. The once who didnt fit, got kicked out kinda. But here they had to raise of the occation and become better. Even the scientists weren't the top-notch tier. Sure they was on both atlantis and SG-1 at some point, but not the most important people. Except of Rush, who was one of the leading scientists. And Eli that was the second most important person on Destiny. I did like Eli, but he was this nerd who never got the girl, not even when he actually got one of the evil girls to like him. Ok, she wasnt evil really, but she was getting omboard from the Lucian Alliance. But she got killed, and ended up in as a computercharacter. So Eli has no luck in that department.
Exactly my problem with STD. The show in itself is good but If you look closely every girl we see is badass and flawless while every man is protrayed as weak and flawed. This is normal to be flawed of course but they really seem to forget realism and balance when it comes to it. Why they feel like they need to do that is beyond me.The are fighting a war that was won years ago. Most shows in the 90's nailed feminism by portraying logical likable female characters. I will always remeber Samantha Carter and I still love the actress , did you see the internet fan series that she end up running ? Can't remember but the name but it ran for a few seasons and was quite good. Anyways those shows made better job as displaying equality of treatment between man and woman . Lately it seems they want more than equality and that's the issue.Stargate standed on awesome characters that had real anchors to the world. My all time favourite is Daniel Jackson, best character ever! I really do not manage to find Michael Burnham interesting. I dont understand why she made such a stupid decision in the first episode, and how they just try to pretend she's badass and capable but she never really does anything the plot doesn't need her to do in some miraculous way that actually anyone else could pull off because she doesn't have even have a specific post. She's specialist but of what exactly ? No idea. She can use tech I guess , and defies order all the time because she sees herself as the best authority on everything. Other than that they feel the need to show us a gay couple, just to be trendy. And as always the relationship is basic and uninteresting. One guy plays the role of the wife and that's how they pretend they understand homosexuality and accept it but have no clue of what it is. Walking dead did just the same. Meanwhile every other guy is either a bad one or an alien. Either they are blind to their own work, either they are pushing it. I'm not sure. I'm hyped for the finale tho! I also quite like Tyler's character, and Logan. I just wish there wasn't a matriarchy agenda all over my favorites shows ( or even Star Wars ) . I hope this phase will pass , because this sucks.
IMO the Stamets couple worked so much better than the Michael-Tyler couple in STD. It was portrayed as an actually believable relationship, that is directly affected by their duties giving more layers to it.
I love SG1, but Atlantis has more Ancient storylines in it. And I think everything with the Ancients is just so awesome. Even better then the discovery of the Asgard in the early Seasons. McKay is really great.
SG1 is still the heart and soul of the universe for me, but Atlantis was hella awesome and fun and looking back so many of my favorite episodes come from it too. All the characters are so well done too.
I'm so very glad to see someone appreciates Atlantis as much as I do. Definitely more interesting than it's predecessor, Atlantis had a more gritty feel; people died often and in usually horrible ways, unknown technology was always very dangerous and it gave the feeling that even the protagonists could die relatively easily, unlike in SG1. However, I think this was probably due to the general style and tone change from the 80s and 90s series to the 2000s and after. I truly think they could have managed to produce a couple more seasons without losing series cohesion and pace.
Another great video! My favorite episode is the first one “Todd” is introduced. You mentioned you could do a whole video on Rodney, I would like to request that you do. Actually any more videos you can do on Stargate Atlantis is much welcomed! Thanks!
First, great discussion and review! I love this series and agree that it is mich more focused than SG1. But imho, ou are somewhat wrong about Higgins (and Carter). She was very much missed and there was a outcry from the fans. Albeit not as much as when they killed off Paul McGillion (nothing beats that) #RIPBeckett). Elisabeth was not as interesting, I agree, but she was the mother-like figure that had the menecing task of keeping a scared and stranded team together in a hostile galaxy. While you do not always notice/care for her during the show, as soon as she was gone, there was a huge empty space to be filled. Carter was severely underplayed in Atlantis. Considering how well established her character was in SG1, I neher felt like it actually was Carter I saw on tye screen. She was way too restrained and way too cautios. And whenever there was a crisis, why wasnt she helping McKay find a solution? Carter is usually the first to start fixing stuff. But in Atlantis you barely see her do anything but give orders. Sure, she wasnt supposed to overshadow the Atlantis team, but she could have been a bit more... Carter. Which brings me to my comparison: Woolsey. He felt exactly as Woolsey from SG1, with a bit more character. In fact, most of the cameoing characters from SG1 felt like their characters of that show. But not Carter.
I completely agree on the McKay character, it was written so well it made it where The guy playing McKay had to act out every emotion and he did it so well.
4:42 PLEASE DO THAT! Rodney was with hands down the core of SGA. Without him the series wouldn't have reached season 5. Despite being a very good addition in the SG universe, without Rodney I think it would have ended similar like SGU because it changed a lot of stuff. Rodneys charisma (no, really), his personality, his flaws and his strengths as well, they all contributed to make every episode interesting disregarding what it was about.
My favourite episode involving Rodney is the one where a alternate version of himself arrives from another universe and is the mirror opposite with his team being more like the Rodney of our universe. I especially like the end where after he goes back the team treat our Rodney a better as though they know more about his flaws and insecurities. As though the Alternate Rodney had explained that to them prior to going back.
While I really like both SG1 and SGA, what made both shows so special to me is that they ran concurrently. Seeing set-ups happening not only over time, but also across shows, has made both shows unforgettable for me.
I watched Stargate SG-1 on TV and followed it from beginning to end on Hulu. I liked Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and Jack O'Neil (Richard Dean Anderson.) It lasted too long. The thing with the Ori was jumping the shark. There is a modern trend of such shows having a beginning, middle and end and concluding - an I think that is a good idea. I started following Stargate Atlantis and losty interest. Maybe I should start again.
My Thoughts on Stargate Universe (Major Spoilers)
ruclips.net/video/xsGWQxNIBAU/видео.html
I love the relationship between Rodney and Shepherd they just rounded each other off really well and that slight Bromance going on is awesome one with the times that they were at each other's throats then they came to see eye-to-eye on things and even had the same line of thought
I have to agree with you on your comments about the "Geni".
(DISCLAIMER- Im still on season 1 on SG.A. so my opinions are only related to the 1st season. Who knows I'll probably have different opinions later in the show. I hope thats the case)
I think they could have had more potential with the Geni if they would have left them as allies rather than just using for some quick episode filler drama.
Its just getting a little old watching Major Shepherd, Teyla, McKay and Ford, after the attempted take over of Atlantis, the times they were double-crossed, sold out to the Geni, held hostage and robbed at gunpoint, and yet, after everything they've been through, they still just hop through the Stargate onto an unfamiliar planet inhabited by complete strangers, and only a few hours after meeting these strangers, they drop their guards and skip right on into any situation with their pants down and backs exposed, like 4 bumbling idiots just asking for it to happen to them again and again and again. without having some some well armed backup in an extra Jumper waiting within radio distance, or at the very least someone waiting behind at their ship to guard it and to keep tabs on them through their radios and keep communications open with Atlantis
Even without any of the soldiers that came with them from earth, between the Athosians (Teyla's people who are now also on Lantea on the mainland & in Atlantis with the Group) & the Hoffans or any other Allies against the Wraith the Group made , they should have been able to get some kind of extra Manpower or at the very least maybe hired some Mercenaries for backup.
That way whenever they go out on their different missions they can stop ending up in these very predictable situations where they're outnumbered, overpowered and unable to defend themselves or complete the mission. They're continuously getting tricked, double-crossed, taken advantage of, stolen from and ultimately coming back empty handed. Which is technically a net loss because of all the time and resources each mission takes
Thats the thing I really liked about "Stargate Universe", they had at good amount of well trained, well armed disciplined soldiers who could respond to security threat.
Still watching the episode so hopefully the team pulls through.
i enjoyed this.
McKay was so annoying.
@@FastDuDeJiunn-Carter wasn't perfect , but unlike McKay she wasn't a jerk and a think she knew it all.
Maj. Lorne: Wow, you must really be some kind of genius.
Dr McKay: Well, as a matter of fact I ...eh, wait a minute, why would you say that now?
Maj. Lorne: Something has to have kept Col. Sheppard from shooting you all this time.
I love those lines.
I hated Rodney in SG1 but grew to love him in Atlantis.
I think this is because his introduction in SG-1 portrayed him as somewhat as a bad guy, in that he wanted to erase Teal'c in order to get the stargate up and running again because of his arrogance. You were supposed to dislike him for that.
And, honestly, that added to how much we love him in Atlantis.
He was meant to be a disliked one-off character. He replaced the originally cast "difficult guy" and can see how they adjusted the character. Was a star in this show
Didn't like him in his first SG-1, but liked him m ore in the second.
Having just watched both your Stargate recaps, time to dust off the old DVDs and binge watch 200+ hours of Stargate!
you can also binge watch both series on amazon prime video.

@@slevinchannel7589 Stargate Universe is a great show if you can chew the first 6-7 episodes.
@@dustojnikhummer Sounds like you're ignoring A FREAKING LOT if you think that.
@@slevinchannel7589 Nope. I just really enjoyed Stargate Universe.
He cameos on SGU as well.
honestly the stargate series is one of the best and one of the most under rated series of shows of all time especially among scifi shows.
He became a series regular because fans loved him so much.
they shouldn't have killed him. think of it in both series the main doctor is killed. Beckett wass just too much and the writers got hounded for it.
Kris Williams it’s different because the clone has different memory’s from the season 2/3 episode he got created around, I get not liking them bringing a character back, but they made it clear that the character who died was a different person to the clone
Woolsey: "Please state the nature of the medical emergency...wait, that's not right..." ;)
before he was made into a hologram he was a robotic driver on Mars. (Johnny Cab)
I would have loved a scene where they do the usual "general... general" and someone turns to wolsey and says "doctor" then he looks panicked for a second and corrects them saying he's only got a masters or something
HA, yes, I forgot about that...hey you didn't pay, I'm gonna run you over! Total Recall the original was a good movie adaptation.
Please state the nature of your apolitical agencey report
Read it in his voice :)
The episode where McCay loses his memorie was such a gut punch to watch. Its the best episode of all of stargate
It's "mister" now."
We see him show humility again in the episode where he is enhanced by the Ancient device. His abilities go straight to his head. However, when he realizes he's on a one-way track to Ascension (and death), he basically goes on a "if today was your last day" montage, apologizing for his actions, aiding his friends, and trying to clear his conscience before the end.
An actor on a show called "Atlantis" ends up playing Aquaman for the DC movies... coincidence? I think NOT!
LOL I never even thought about that
Pity that universe has been all but scrapped now
Mike George lol wait a sec you really think that had a big deal in his being cast as Aqua man
When I first saw McKay in Stargate SG-1, I never imagined that I would one day end up loving him so much.
I truly think Rodney McKay's character arc through the Stargate franchise was one of the best written and most enjoyable arcs I have ever seen.
I mean seriously, Stargate in the past has always managed to be a kind of "Fuck yeah USA" show while also not disrespecting other countries in the process (The amazing Colonel Chekov comes to mind) and now they go for full on cartoon caricature nazis with thick german accents
Which boring concept Emmerich had? I have never herd of it in depth.
It is... it is wrong, in my opinion to do that mini series with nazis and so. Gate was discovered in 1928, Hitler get to power in 1933 if I am not mistaken, war... they just messed with time line for no good reason.
@@Karou812 I'm such a huge Stargate fan I forgot that origins even was a thing already.... Reading this comment reminded me of some dumb stuff...
My fav episode too! Where Rodney is stuck under water in the puddle jumper. This show is great for it’s character development
Jewel State. You win right there.

Vegas is a brilliant episode with an incredible soundtrack . I was so cut up SGA was cancelled it took me about a year to bring myself to watch it and the finale.
I'm just darn happy that SG1 AND Atlantis exist!
Best McKay line ever: (arrow piereces ass) THAT DID NOT JUST HAPPEN!!!
"You have an arrow, Rodney, In your glutius maximus."
grace under pressure was such a great episode.
Ah yes, of the Barcelona McKays.
The episode that sold me on SGA was "38 minutes". I thought it was amazing how much world-building and character development they could smash into one episode which took place almost entirely in the back of a jumper.
I love saying that I was a fan of Jason Momoa before he was famous, LOL
Roberto Sanchez only if you loved him on Baywatch first!
HAHAHA Baywatch season 10 or "Baywatch Hawaii"
Please make a whole video dedicated to McKay, I would love to see that
They don't make great shows like this anymore. It's really sad.
The Ronan Teal’c episode is everything fan fiction can be at it’s best.
Thanks for reminding me how ++good Stargate Atlantis was/is.
Watching the characters grow during the show was an excellent part of the show.
I loved the show, but I think they missed an opportunity to have a wraith taken over by a goa'uld, tjat would have been interesting.
I always wanted to see a possessed Asgard. I kind of assumed Ra had an Asgard host in the past , because of that flashback we saw in the original movie which showed Ra as an asgard type of creature before he found the humans , and also saying that he's from a dying race (like the asgard)
They also could have done more with the asgard splinter group or the "other technologically advanced races" repliweir talks about...
This was my favorite of the Stargate franchise. Especially loved that opening theme that always got me all hyped for the upcoming episode.
That painting of Rodney being a badass during the episode, "Harmony" is still my desktop background.
I loved the camaraderie of Beckett and McKay. I was super bummed when Beckett was killed.
He was my second fav after Rodney.
Hewlett is an astonishing actor.
RPGStylee Which one? :)
My choices for the top six would be:
6. The Genii
5. The Goa'uld
4. The Wraith
3. The Replicators
2. The Ori
1. The Aschen
Although they only appeared in two episodes ("2010" and "2001"), the humorless and seemingly benign Aschen gradually manage to exterminate the populations of every planet they touch, including Earth, through their subversive and non-confrontational "help". The parallels between the Aschen and feminism are astonishing once you start to notice them. The only way to defeat the Aschen was to avoid them.
... or to make sure they connect their stargate to a black hole... and man have you got some warped views on feminism

Rodney McKay might be one of the most enjoyable characters ever written.
Universe didn't kill Atlantis, it had nothing to do with that show ending.
And i wanted to give the show a chance but after a few episodes i switched it off
only now I realize that Zelenka is the Russian Bratva guy from Arrow lol
wtf seriously?
You cant handle my name! Yep. Radek is KGBeast. :)
yeah he was so nerdy in Atlantis I totally didn't make the connection because he's a badass in Arrow , and also has a beard
Major Grin Let’s hope he gets the suit or something, too! Carson was in the Flash, too.
To all of us SGA fan, the KG Beast was always Zelenka.
But McKay was always Worth (from Cube).
Very much enjoyed this series and like how they wove in characters like Michael, etc. I was sad when it ended.
Of course Weir wasn't missed, if it had been anyone else besides Col. Carter who replaced her then Weir would've been missed. Carter was missed when Woolsey came on board, but Woolsey had such good character development over both series.
Hip hip hooray for Meredith Rodney McKay :D
Meredith. lol
Have you seen his youtube channel? He's got some funny shit there too. Such as this: ruclips.net/video/NG1vWJyT0Rc/видео.html
@@lincolnnoronha4128 Ohhhhh, how he hated that name 😀😂. The reactions to his name are the best
from the rest of Atlantis as well.

The Shrine is my all-time favorite SGA episode. It gives me the feels. :) SGA is also my favorite Stargate series. I miss you Stargate! Hope to see you on TV again someday...
I'm really enjoying your culture critiques Dave. Keep it up.
Really enjoying these reviews. Brings back memories.
To be true I could never take the Goaùld serious... they were to mutch of "Posers".
one is a parasite the other is death
'Nothing of the host survives' - Silly Goa'uld
Star Trek? Babylon 5?
Loved Rodney McKay. His character was so rich and the actor so bloody good at portraying him. A great show overall. Miss it. God bless~
"You're a really good friend, Arthur."
So many great episodes for both shows.
I'm glad I have most of these on DVD.
Of I forgot. Of course David Hewlet and Jewel Staite were the best charachters in my thinking. Rodney and Jennifer Keller were actually characters I really like. It strange how Jewel Staite always seems to get those characters that your instantly just likes. :-)
the fact that shes so cute doesn't hurt.
They did seem to jell quite nicely. Sometimes character seems too forced and they didn't.
Did you instantly like the wraith girl she played too? No snark intended just curious.
Tyreak muthafuka I did like that role.
Noice.
Thank you for your input. We love input!
We liked Jason Momoa before he was cool. :P
another great show....and yes- very underrated...
I always look forward to your reviews, we are so aligned in opinion it’s unreal. (Especially on STA)
Keep it up please!! 👍👍👍🙂🙂🙂🙂
Hi Dave. What do you think about Farscape?
A Manual Kunt
I loved it
Great for the most part till half way through season 4 where it went to pot and then with a god awful mini series ending. That first season though was one of the best things I’d ever seen
@@girshin And the swears OH LOrd the swears, Grozit!!
Hey Dave just wondering if you ever thought of doing something about Babylon 5
That woud be good; B5 is often ignored due to its dated effects, but the story is excellent.
Indeed. Babylon 5 was a great show also, with an epic multi-season spanning story arc. It wasn't afraid to tackle spirituality and treat religious people with dignity and respect, despite being a space based sci-fi show set in the future. I really respected it for that.
SuTen totally agree
Dated effects which were better than the TNG and DS9 effects. DS9 actually switched the to the same methods B5 pioneered. They are no more dated than TNG and Ds9. The reason you don't see it is B5 is not being played anywhere because the dicks at MGM refuse to syndicate so as not to be proven wrong for cancelling it.
The same 128 look that DS9 and the reset of the TV industry rapidly took up. You are an ideologue fanboi.
Ok, am sorry about spamming now, but I had to say this too. What I like about both Star Trek and Stargate is that women and men seems to be able to work together. The writes succeded to wrote story lines where men doesnt need to get weaker, to let the women look *cough* STD *cough*
Stargate had really strong female characters that kinda felt real, and strong.
Lt Mathew Scott a young inexperienced soldier that likes to "fuck" around litterary
Chloe Armstrong that teen that thinks she is important because she is her fathers daugher who was a senator.
They gave them a believable skillset (Samantha Carter for example is a brilliant scientist, but she had to go to the Air Force Academy for that and she's a good soldier, too but she's not better than O'Neill just because she's a woman and can of course beat up men left and right!) and they allowed them to show doubt and weakness (Sam grieving for Daniel when he ascended, Weier not being sure about command decisions etc.) and they gave them flaws, too (Sam's love for technology and science that makes her nearly unable to take time off and relax for example!)
Well, I don't think SGU did women justice and neither did it it men!
Both STD and SGU try (and fail IMHO) to take a piece of the grim-dark-nBSG-pie, not to mention that STD is agenda (SJW-Female-Supremacy-Men-Are-Worthless) pushing big time (nobody would name a child "Michael" if it's a girl, that name isn't unisex, not to mention that someone so emotionally volatile (she's more or less a traitor and should IMHO be put to death, because that happens to traitors in war!) can't have grown up on Vulcan, because frankly: She'd kill herself, being surrounded by emotionally distant/suppressed Vulcans!)
ps: Yeah, only Sam as an example, but I remember her best - she is after all my most favourite Stargate character, before Daniel, McKay, O'Neill etc.
It was portrayed as an actually believable relationship, that is directly affected by their duties giving more layers to it.
yeah well that's because Michel herself is not believeable as a character I would say .
I agree with you and all points, love this series as well as SG1
You hit the nail on the head with this one, i agree with you on pretty much everything you said.
They should have given Atlantis a 6th season.they rushed to tie up several story lines in season 5 that deserved more time.
Atlantis was Stargate's DS9, SG1 was TNG
My favourite episode involving Rodney is the one where a alternate version of himself arrives from another universe and is the mirror opposite with his team being more like the Rodney of our universe.
I especially like the end where after he goes back the team treat our Rodney a better as though they know more about his flaws and insecurities.
As though the Alternate Rodney had explained that to them prior to going back.
Thank god! I was wondering if you were going to do Universe next!
Stargate is my favorite show.
While I really like both SG1 and SGA, what made both shows so special to me is that they ran concurrently. Seeing set-ups happening not only over time, but also across shows, has made both shows unforgettable for me.
Sweet coverage man
Awaiting your video on Stargate Universe!!!
