  • Sam Heughan is a stage actor turned international heartthrob with Outlander, which turned out to be a lot more than you average time-shifting, feminist torn between two lovers, guerrilla war, political soap opera. Meet Sam as he talks to David Poland about his beginnings, his work, and a couple of the most controversial scenes in television this year.
Shot via Skype over two days, June 2015

This interview is fascinating, made before Sam became an international superstar. After listening to him express his discomfort with being in the public eye, and fear of not being able to live his life anonymously, it is even more remarkable that he is so gracious now with the demands on his time. It also speaks to what a trained actor he is, and how he prepares for even the smallest detail. He is a true gentleman, and a serious, fantastic actor.

@Total Outlander Obsession & @Ana Scarone I honestly believe because Sam has had such a humbling upbringing and what his Mother instilled in him. I could never see him as a bobblehead No Way he understands this is just a way to reveal One of his many Talent's. I love how he expresses his work with the theater 🎭 and how he's just a regular guy. I strongly believe it's due to him not being raised in the State's and of course his strong attachment to his family /close friends that actually got his back & Real. I must say I've never had the pleasure of meeting him in person but if I ever had the chance I know for a fact I would not stop smiling or laughing, he's got a fantastic sense of Humor. I would also like to pick his brain he's very Intelligent 🧠 but so very Humble. I've seen a few of his one on one interviews like this one and if you really pay attention you see the real Sam Heughan a proud Scotsman 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 💙 I pray 🙏🏽 he accomplish all he set's out to do including him climbing that snow ❄️ freezing mountain'🏔️ again he mentioned he didn't make it to the top. One thing I can honestly say that I've noticed about Sam he doesn't take himself to seriously & He absolutely enjoys & values life that's a definite MPC My Peak Challenge that we all should strive for.

Sam Heughan definitely delivered the performance of the year in TV drama this year. I do hope he is rewarded with the Emmy. Watching this I am reminded that in addition to being a phenomenal talent and ultimate professional he is such a generous person. Many of these questions would have elicited a more negative response if directed at many other individuals, but Sam remains gracious and generous to the end. Admirable how true to himself he remains even amid all the glare and noise from the media and fans he encounters in the US. Really enjoyed hearing Sam's thoughts.

Sam Heughan is so handsome in A Princess for Christmas, and far better actor than many hollywood stars like Cruise, Decaprio, Deniro, and etc.

This was one of the best interviews I've seen with Sam--very personal without silly questions. I loved how you asked about what got him in to acting, and where he wants his career to go. It was great to hear him talk about his career in general, and not just Outlander.
Being a book fan from the beginning (1991), and a big fan of the show, it didn't bother me that you didn't know about the books or how many there are--that did NOT take away from the interview. I agree with your comment, and it was refreshing to see you more interested in the person than the books or show--that came through clearly!
Thank you for an awesome job--well done. Also, a big thanks to Sam for giving two days of his time to be available.

I can sense that this interviewer has some issues with Sam. He wanted to show that he is more intellectually superior than the person he is interviewing . To quote his wife’s comment on Sam’s ability to speak Gaelic which is more inferior than that of his counterpart was somewhat rude in my hearing taking into consideration that Sam is a Scotch and she is not. And the chuckle that ensue after that was somewhat irritating. But Sam took it calmly and answer that question beautifully. And that was what endeared Sam with me. Sam did a lighthearted romantic comedy before OUTLANDER that's quite charming called A PRINCESS FOR CHRISTMAS. It's appropriate for all ages. I've watched it many times and it always leaves me feeling happy and hopeful. It can be purchased/rented on some streaming sites, but currently (April 2020) I've been watching it FREE on Amazon Prime Video. Once in, scroll down to the line "Your Channels", select "IMDb TV", then scroll down to "Romance Movies", scroll through the row to find the movie. You can choose to watch it for free with a few ads during it. I agree it would be wonderful to see Sam in a rom/com in future. Until then give this one a try. I know this info comes much later than the original posts. Hopefully it will help others, like me who are just discovering OUTLANDER and it's talented actors, be able to also enjoy Sam in another genre.

    Really enjoyed theatre discussion.
I'm adding something to my above comment from six months ago.
I hated Starlight, Emulsion, Bloodshot, SAS movies.
Now that he's got credibility and money, I hope he chooses future projects that have top-notch writing on the caliber of Outlander. Plus we don't need another Schwarzenegger. He's better than that. Once Outlander is over (and it will be eventually), if he continues to make fluff, I will no longer support him and watch his work.
I know and love live theatre and have seen it all over the world including tons of times in London. So I hope he keeps that up. Maybe one day I'll be lucky to catch him in a play.

Excellent questions about acting and being in show business. Really enjoyed watching this. I can sure relate about Skype/internet dropping out in the middle of conversations! Thanks.
Oh, P.S. SPOILER ALERT: Sam needs to be prepared to learn some Chinese.

I don't think he is getting the recognition as an actor that he deserves. Jamie Fraser is a demanding ever-changing character. Its physical and emotional and nuanced.

Really informative interview. Great questions that get at actor Sam discussion. Very interesting. Would like to see more like this. Would be interesting to have these questions asked today, 10 years after the program started.

Hey Sam, I lived in Echo Park in 1976 in a fairy tale cottage, with no idea that it was a dangerous place to be. At the time, the Hillside Strangler was choosing victims in my neighborhood. Echo Park has been seriously gentrified. But it definitely had hidden charms back then.

I've noticed that extremely handsome men are rarely awarded acting trophies or they come much later in their careers. I don't know if it is professional jealousy or what. I think Sam may have
to contend with this bias. But he is definitely very talented. It's funny that women don't seem to have to deal with that as much.

    • @SilkSpectre7
      @SilkSpectre7 2 года назад +1

well they do - it's only recently that this has changed - or rather - beautiful talented women used to stop getting job offers once they hit their 30s. But you're right - there is definitely a bias amont the business re a beautiful man starring in a romantic setting - and that's equally unfair. He deserves a lot more recognition than he got from the Business.
