    Matt, you have no idea how much I want a regular campaign diary produced specifically by you. The issue that I have following these amazing D&D streams is that I never have enough time to watch all of it. I want to be able to watch when I can but still be able to catch up when I miss an episode. I think none of us could have imagined this over 2 years ago, when Matt started the race for 5000 subsrcibers. Last time he gave out two copies of Fantasy Grounds, but this time you all have given us so much more. Mere words are not enough to say how thankful I am for all of you, the people at MCDM, but of course for the hole community, that trusted a team, that had a vision and the guts to bring that vision to life. I've been putting off getting Strongholds and Followers (mostly because I'm super lazy). But after hearing about the war mechanics I'm like, "I NEEEED IIIIIIITTTTTT!" I plan to have the party involved in some large-scale battles, because there's going to be a coup in my yuan-ti nation at some point during the campaign. And if the party doesn't help the deposed queen take the crown back, it could spell dire consequences for not just the yuan-ti, but for the neighboring nation as well. I went ahead and pre-ordered the print copy because, well, I like books.

    Greatest puzzle I ever ran was a door with a riddle lock.
    I snagged the riddle from a children's puzzle book I saw in a waiting room.
    87 minutes of exhilarating debate later and the party is screaming, unhinged, and at each other's throats.
    Eventually one figures it out by yelling random nouns.
    The door swung open for them and the PCs began to search the funhouse dungeon (one of the PCs own mindscapes) for the deadly assassin lying in wait.
    I still can't believe that worked

  • @cubandarknez
    @cubandarknez 5 лет назад

    Regarding murder mysteries in DnD, I think it can work, but requires a lot of finesse and preparation on the DM's part. More to that, I am also uncertain if the reward is worth the time put into it, compared to other types of arcs you can present to your players. One thing that i have found essential is to NOT plan everything out to a T. Have an idea for the main players involved and the main mystery, then just have HOOKS that can be the clues and leads the players find that lead them to the next part and serve as a sense of progression. Additionally, don't wait for the players to find YOUR CLUE at every turn of the mystery, sometimes you can just let whatever the second, third, or fourth thing be 'IT' and give them the next HOOK (this is why i use the term 'hook' and not clue, because the 'hook' can end up being whatever clue the players happened to investigate, 2nd, 3rd, 4th). Lastly, put social conflict or simply combat in your murder mystery. Some characters will not be suited for a murder mystery arc, unless you explicitly told the players to prepare PCs for this type of content. This can lead to those players feeling left out and bored if its just 3-4 hours of following clues and social interactions and they have an 8 intelligence character or 8 charisma character.

    I once had a very successful session 1 setup that had all the makings of a murder mystery, with a sultan throwing a private banquet, his bodyguards present, several detailed guests, some shifty, like the slave trader, some pleasant, like the mysterious courtesan... there was dinner served and (unbeknownst to me) all my players kept waiting for the shoe...or rather the sultan to drop, leading to the inevitable search for the culprit. as the dinner went off without such a hitch, their guard dropped. as they found themselves in the sultan's treasure room (which is not a euphemism) to deposit an offering (still not a euphemism) from one of the guests, several chests burst open (come on now, stay with me) and they were assaulted by horrid Darkmantles, serving as a diversion while the illusion fell off the courtesan and a corrupted Deva stole a tablet inscribed with the Truenames of ancient demons... I was rather proud of that one. Almost as proud as Matt seems to be of this book...
