5:58 Fun fact: In an issue of Marvel Team-Up from 2004 Blade and Punisher cross paths for the first time on a rooftop. Blade remarks that he had just watched a new documentary about The Punisher, who then informs him "That one was grossly inaccurate."
Bringing on Guillermo del Toro to direct the sequel was the best decision that could've made in regards to Blade II. His style of Gothic horror mixed in with the sleek and dark visual flare of the Blade universe makes for a very special comic book film, and Wesley Snipes seems like he was having a real blast playing this character.
This movie is like forgotten gift to fandom - Guillermo Del Toro made a Marvel Superhero movie with not just Blade, but also Ip Man, Hellboy, and Darryl from Walking Dead, and it's every bit as cool as that sounds like it should be.
@@JamesVSCinema This had Del Toro all over it...he uses Ron Perlman in damn near everything he does (Hellboy, Pacific Rim, Chronos), and the actor playing Nomak was also the main villain of Hellboy 2. For some of us of the slightly nerdier persuasion, the style coordinator for this film was also the creator of the Vampire: the Masquerade role-playing game of the '90s-early 2000s (which just had a new video game release about two months ago).
Snipes being a real martial artist brings so much to this role. He looks so much better than those actors with the "oh we teach you a few punches real quick" bootcamp. Those high kicks are crazy difficult on their own and doing them in this outfit? I'm so impressed by this man.
Donnie Yen was the fight choreographer for this movie. That's why he didn't do too much on screen. He was too busy making the badass fight scenes for Blade
The Blade franchise does not get the credit it truly deserves. They weren't huge blockbusters like the Spider-Man films were, but they truly paved the way. They were good and full of action. Black Panther gets all the credit but Blade did everything that movie did first.
Blade as a character should also get credit for being such a funny character at times without being a clown. Like this is a masterclass on how to make the strong cool hero be funny without diminishing his coolness factor or sacrificing his character, they should look into it more.
Snipes literally risked his career for this character and franchise to be brought onto the big screen. This franchise is the reason why the MCU didn’t go out of business let alone have a Black Panther film.
Blade II is such a huge stylistic shift from Blade 1. I like both, but I think I prefer the more stylized visual design del Toro brought to II, and the rawness of the action sequences in I.
I think Wesley Snipes is a hugely underrated actor. This man played Blade and did really difficult martial arts choreography. He also played Noxeema Jackson, a drag queen, in To Wong Foo, and the portrayal is so convincing I am sure Noxeema is a real person. Those two characters are portrayed by the same person, which is so wild.
As a kid my parents would always take us to the movies on our birthday, our pick. My brother picked this (we loved the first one). My mom was NOT happy walking out of that theater. 🤣
Del toro said this was one of the most fun movies he’s ever directed. Said he had a blast. It’s nice to hear that from someone more known for his more artsy films recently.
If you want another anti-hero check out the Riddick franchise. The first one is Pitch Black. Personally Riddick is my favorite anti-hero. He's badass, intelligent, complex, and the universe it's set in deserves to be developed even more.
@@BDogg2023 No further need for guilt dear friend, it's cult classic status nowadays so we can now openly celebrate the fun we had watching the Riddick films ;)
Gotta agree James, this is probably my favorite of the trilogy and it’s largely due to the antagonist being better written than the others. Feel like this is probably the “darkest” of the trilogy too.
Nomak is legit a great antagonist. The actor who played him, Luke Goss, also played the antagonist of the second Hellboy movie, which del Toro also directed. He was great as a villain in that as well. Tragically underrated actor.
Fun fact: Nomak is played by Luke Goss, former bandmember (singer/drummer) of UK 80ies boyband Bros with twin brother Matt Goss and bassist Craigh Logan. Luke Goss had another collaboration with Blade 2 director Guillermo del Toro in Hellboy 2.
Guillermo Del Toro really breaking off his fetish for weird vampire stuff in Blade 2! 🤣🤣🤣 Seriously though, check out his other vampire work - Chronos, also with Ron Perlman, and The Strain (which GDT co-wrote with Chuck Hogan).
Okay but, can we just take a moment to laugh at how he jumps up after suplexing that guy. I don't know why, but it always gives me the giggles. Also, one of my favorite vampire movies.
The Punisher + Blade. holy. James is the Genius the film ind needs. Somehow this never came to mind, yet, so needed and I would pay to see vs the tripe we have failing us now.
So I'm in the UK and a cool fact is that the villain, acted by Luke Goss, was In THE UK's biggest boy band in the 80's with his twin brother Matt. I mean MASSIVE. The UK trash newspapers loves to build heroes up and then shit on them. The boys took a hammering and both moved to the US to escape. I think this is Luke's best roll, tied with his Prince Nuada roll in Hellboy II. Good to see him "up there" after what the UK did to him and his bro. Much love.
"It's great that it starts out on a fight scene"... The Blade trilogy... across the entire series, there is a fight scene every 10-15 minutes of screen time.. This truly doesn't get the recognition. Too many say Singer's X-Men saved comicbook movies, but it was Blade. They didn't try to do too much, and just gave us from the page action.
The Donnie Yen part, from what I remember from doing fan research he choreographed the fight scenes and it’s one of the reasons why he was killed off, to work back stage for the fights.
I don't know if you have seen it but the early 2000's punisher had a lot of great hand to hand combat and badass moments like blade. Worth a watch for sure!
every Guiliermo Del Toro movie contains these at one point: low mood lighting, rain as a sad moment cue, fight scenes in the rain, practical effects, an autopsy sequence, and Ron Perlman.
Back after this movie released I remember a bust statue being sold of the new vampire breed with the mouth flaps fully open wide in movie quality detail. It looked too real to own, might wake up one day, see it and shit your pants lol
The dude from Prototype is “Alex Mercer” and I agree! Tho that’s why I love this character, another fun fact the dude playing Novak is also the same actor that plays “prince Nuada” in hellboy 2
Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool because of his role in sequel, Blade Trinity. He played Hannibal King in that godawful Blade movie, which still is my guilty pleasure. His Hannibal King was pretty much spot on Deadpool in tone of jokes, so someone mentioned to him, he would be perfect Deadpool. And ever since Ryan Reynolds wanted to play Deadpool.
Just gonna say it like this: Whichever actor tries to take up the mantle of Blade in the future has his work cut out for him. Snipes nailed it to perfection...and with indomitable style. Over and done
I love the Blade films, but you're right. Deacon Frost was just kind of a power hungry punk in the first movie, whereas Novak in this film was simultaneously very relatable, given his story, and also the vampire equivalent of the terminator. Excellent villain. The 3rd film gets mixed reviews with fans, but I still enjoyed it. Hope to see you react to that one as well.
Blade 3 was mixed bags for me,Blade didn't need team-mates,he's always best SOLO. They wanted to do a spin-off movie with his team-mates,didn't happen of course.
Honestly, the only effects that have dated badly in it is the part of the Nyssa vs Blade fight in front of the massive lights. Aside from that, most of it still holds up quite well.
Love Luke Goss in this movie, I remember him as a pop star in a group called Bros in the 80s and never knew he got into acting until I saw this movie. He is great in this and also in Hellboy 2 :)
The fight choreography in this movie is what I wish had gotten popular instead of the shaky cam stuff. Combining MMA and pro wrestling moves like that suplex is so fucking badass
This is probably my favorite of the trilogy, and having sampled other Guillermo Del Toro movies over the year's, his signature is all over this movie, especially if you watched the Hellboy movie's, some of what was in Blade 2 carries over. The lighting, CG, choreography even, Del Toro supernatural movies have a style to them. Some of the shit Blade was doing, the moves, were just unmatched in any of the other 2 movies.
These movies were so underrated when they came out and del Toro certainly put his stamp on this one. This easily is as good as any of the last 22 MCU movies which began in 2008 with Iron Man.
Glad that you're seeing a lot of movies that modern kids have no idea, exist. So many classics and first time ever scenes/climaxes/groundbreaking cinematography, performances & just the little things that film aficionados to appreciate.
I hope someone informed you that the actor playing Whistler, Kris Kristofferson, was a country music singer. Played in the 2nd remake of “A Star is Born” as well. The one prior to Brad Cooper and Lady Gaga.
There are actually multiple styles of martial arts used by Blade in these movies. Wesley Snipes is a black belt in multiple different styles including Karate and Taekwondo. This is also very much in line with the comic books, where Blade is well known for being a master of many different martial arts.
Guillermo Del Toro's series The Strain was pretty interesting. Treating vampirism from a CDC response teams perspective. He used some of the designs for the enhanced vampires in this, and the initial story was very entertaining, trying to contain an outbreak in new york
Guillermo Del Toro also directed the first two Hellboy films, the second of which also stars Luke Goss. The Irish vampire, Tony Curran, plays another vampire in Underworld Evolution. Donnie Yen also served as the fight coordinator. Besides The Walking Dead, Norman Reedus also starred in both Boondock Saints movies. Ron Perlman also starred in the first two Hellboy films
The fight scene in front of the UV lights might not have aged well, but holy FUCK does the opening maw reveal still hold up and then some 20 years later!
Blade II rocks! My favorite of the franchise! Wesley Snipes has like a 9th degree belt or something major like that.. The director had to tell him to slow down so they could catch his movements on film.. Blade is FIRE 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Blade 2 is my favorite out of the 3. FYI, Blade and Punisher have teamed up before...Marvel's Midnight Sons: Blade, Ghost Rider, Morbius, Doctor Strange, Punisher and Daimon Hellstrom. Moon Knight and Iron Fist have also been on the team, along with other supernatural Marvel Charactors. There's also a new version of the team coming out, that will feature Iron Man & Wolverine, among others.
When Del Toro talks about Nomak, he describes him like a fallen prince, a man who lost his kingdom, and that the people he kills are drug dealers and people like those blood bank vampires- people Nomak feels are taking advantage of his kingdom. And he found a way to make little pairs and couples out of the Blood Pact, miniature friendships, to make the group more visually relatable and give them personal relationships and a personality so that they had emotional value across the movie. All these little things, the devil in the details, is why Del Toro is one of the absolute best- maybe the best director of our time. And damn, they gave Blade a love interest, and like a real Samurai/warrior tragedy, she dies at the end. Frickin epic.
If you like Norman Reedus in this one, Ryan Reynolds is in the third movie. In fact, Ryan Reynold's character in the third movie was actually the start of his Deadpool personae.
Honestly one of my favorite comicbook films of all time! And its funny that you spoke about the villain in this because he is one of the reasons I like this one better than the first. I mean I still liked the first one but this one and the Reapers were just so much more intimidating as villains. The digital AND practical effects were amazing as well, even for this time. And then to top it all off, the action was even better than it was in the first one. A+ movie for me!
I thought I heard of Donnie yen a decade ago then I was like he was in blade ?!! And yeah and I love him and blade saved marvel period. Great reaction. I like the the third but yeah is was different but Wesley is a pro when in comes to fights. Greetings from France 🇫🇷
If you want another Del Torro vampire film then I highly recommend Chronos. First film of his that I saw, and he became one of my favorite directors from that day. Can’t say he’s ever let me down, Guillermo does damn good work.
The guy who plays Nomak is also playing Prince Nuada in HELLBOY: The Golden Army. Should have been in more comic book movies. He makes a good villain! :D
Oddly enough, Nomak And Nuada are damn near the same character. (Gothy looking badass prince of a superhumanoid race conspires against his father and has a sister that opposes him and has an attraction to one of the heroes)
Snipes brought a coolness to the Blade character that will never be duplicated. The new one has big shoes to fill that I do not see how he will fill. I've watched the commentary of this one and the directors comments on the various takes about Damaskinos with or without wigs is hilarious.
Whistler's survival after shooting himself is often brought up as a plot hole between the two films. I think it's an easy one to fill. Frost says to Whistler, "I'm not gonna bite you," and I think he told the truth. I think he had QUINN bite Whistler. As we got to see several times, Quinn is of a vampire type (IIRC there are a half dozen or so different bloodlines of vampire in Blade lore) that is incredibly difficult to kill unless an immediately fatal blow is delivered. We saw Quinn shrug off silver, so if he bit Whistler it's not so far fetched for him to survive a shot to the head if the bullet didn't hit right.
I wasn't able to see Blade 1 in theaters, But when Blade 2 came out. I had to see it in the big screen. Me and my cousins went on opening weekend. We had a blast, Guillermo brought the horror element to the franchise. which was a nice touch.
Some background on Wesley Snipes Snipes has been training since 12 and has a 5th degree black belt in Shotokan Karate and a 2nd degree black belt in Hapkido. He has also studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Capoeira, and Kung Fu.Nov 1, 2011
Blade 2 is the fan favorite of the series. Not hard to see why. It moves along nicely after the first film but adds more to the lore. Which I liked alot. Their history is quite interesting. The film was also more intense and wild too. It was darker and scarier too. The Reapers used to scare the hell out of me when I was younger. The fight scenes in this was also alot of fun to watch. The humor was great and surprisingly witty. At times, film had a bit of romantic vibe that is kind of unexpected but a welcomed surprise. I remembered not expecting the ending at all. In all fairness to Nomak, I don't blame him for being so bitter at all. He didn't ask to be a Reaper. That was kind of forced on him. The music was also amazing but I feel like no one really listens to the scores of the films. Which is kind of a shame.
Fun fact - the actor Luke Goss who plays Novak in this film, and was also in Hellboy 2, was in a boy band with his twin brother Matt in the late 1980's! Check out the song "When Will I Be Famous" by Bros 😁
Donnie Yen (among his buddies that trained at his moms martial arts school in Boston…who also starred in some of Donnie’s HK movies) also served as fight choreographer in this movie
I'm not sure people realize how much Blade 2 influenced action/comic book movies that were to come after it, up to this day. Today extended shots with CGI doubles and a free camera is the norm (and is not that inventive anymore), but back when Blade 2 released, this kind of stylized action was never seen before.
I don't care, Blade is the dopest dude around.

Ironically guillermo would use these same effects the monsters have to his own vampire series called The Strain.
Yes, I was waiting for this, thanks my dude 👍😁
If you like Norman Reedus in this one, Ryan Reynolds is in the third movie. In fact, Ryan Reynold's character in the third movie was actually the start of his Deadpool personae.
26:24 That split is one of my favorite fatality´s
I still come back to this one. Just so much style.
He was also in the boy-band: Bros, who were huge at that time.
@@OofHearted remember them well lol
Oddly enough, Nomak And Nuada are damn near the same character. (Gothy looking badass prince of a superhumanoid race conspires against his father and has a sister that opposes him and has an attraction to one of the heroes)
The Blade movies have no right to be as good as they are.
But they are, and I love them!
Love hearing the love for this!!
26:08 you missed how blade just pops up after that wrestling move lol
Dude, you gotta watch Demolition Man. Stallone and Snipes, awesome movie!
6:30 My man needs to know about MIDNIGHT SONS
Heck yeah! Definitely the best Blade out of the trilogy. Donnie Yen is the fight choreographer and it shows how saucy the fight scenes are.
Blade 2 is king in my opinion too. Also the Volatile is what you're trying to remember in Dying Light.
MY FAVORITE BLADE MOVIE AND MY FAVORITE BLADE VILLAIN.
Some background on Wesley Snipes
Snipes has been training since 12 and has a 5th degree black belt in Shotokan Karate and a 2nd degree black belt in Hapkido. He has also studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Capoeira, and Kung Fu.Nov 1, 2011
Good one brother! Always enjoy hearing your opinion on my favorites.
They perfectly nailed the "style" of Blade in these movies.
There's a very particular art to him.
He did take the Reapers across into his television series 'The Strain' which I can highly recommend ;)
Maehershala Ali is playing Blade in the MCU, and that starts filming in August apparently. Hopefully we will receive more news from ComicCon.
I'm not sure people realize how much Blade 2 influenced action/comic book movies that were to come after it, up to this day. Today extended shots with CGI doubles and a free camera is the norm (and is not that inventive anymore), but back when Blade 2 released, this kind of stylized action was never seen before.
