  • In this video I venture to Oudongk with ‪@AnirudhBhati‬ to visit a Champa Cleric who I met about a year ago in this video: • The Oudong you haven't... Here we sit and chat and I give him a small gift as a token of respect.

The gentleman you called grandpa is not an indigenous people. Champ are the people belong to Champa kingdom in present day Central Vietnam. After Vietnam invaded the Champa kingdom in the 1600’s, Champ fled to Khmer kingdom. Cambodian king during the time allowed them to settle in Kompung Cham and Prek Russey( present day in Southern Vietnam). That’s right the gentleman tried to tell you he does not have his own country or the king. Now Champ people are free to live wherever they want and they have as much right as their Cambodian counter part. Btw, Champ people are mostly government officials and royalties who fled from Vietnamese ethnic cleansing. I believe there are more Champ living in Cambodia than their native Champa kingdom.

Would love to see that book! It's one of a kind and hopefully is preserved digitally somewhere. This particular subgroup of Chams is the Kan Imam Sann - they actually have a super important festival at Oudong tomorrow (Sunday June 11th), their Maolot procession. The whole community comes together on the mountain, the one time per year where the villages from Kampong Chhnang, Battambang, and Pursat convene. Their may still be a few Cham villages from Kampot, Kandal and Kratie that will join them, it's unclear what their allegiance/alliance to KIS is. KIS is difficult to wrap your head around because for sure they are the core carriers of traditional Cham practices while the vast majority of Cambodian Chams gravitate more towards global Sunni and Malay practices, but KIS also preserve reverance for this mystical Malay figure, Imam Sann - that's in their name. Paradoxically, they are what some academics have called stalwarts against Malayification, preservers of the Kak Khak script whereas all other Chams in Cambodia use Jawi Arabic for religious texts. The KIS pray only on Fridays, participate in the Chai ceremonies where they channel ancient spirits of Champa, and do other things that make them out of line with mainstream Islam (pejoratively called Jahed by many of their Sunni neighbors) - many of the villages in recent years have fallen in line with praying 5x a day and other mainstream practices, no doubt the wealthy Saudi/Kuwaiti donors with shiny new mosques and donations of cattle dangled in front of them a big motivation.Conversely, you have the early 2000s war on terror directed by the US, attempting to stop the spread of fundamentalist Islam in SE Asia, and the US grants to preserve traditional writing and culture in the KIS Cham community clearly having some degree of influence there. KIS actually has an officially recognized Ong Knour on par with the mainstream/Sunni Grand Mufti - they are meant to be equal under Cambodian law, but of course KIS has like 38,000 members whereas the Grand Mufti represents like 400,000 primarily-Sunni Chams, so there's some tension/resentment there from a few KIS leaders that the Ong Knour often takes a backseat in official recognitions of the Muslim community of Cambodia. This spot atop Oudong is KIS's most important religious spot, hence why these older members stay up there, but Kao Sor Orrusey in Sre Prey Village up in Kampong Chhnang, not a super far drive from Oudong, is their day-to-day spiritual home, the most active KIS village. This and a few other villages in Kampong Chhnang form of the core of KIS, then a few other villages in Pursat and Battambang are closely aligned. Their Kak Khak script for Western Cham is finally getting included in Unicode right now and that's been a big thing this year for creating a unified community outside of just the Maolot: they had a "best handwriting" competition to collect samples of kakkhak writing, writers young and old competed in Pursat, Battambang, and Kampong Chhnang with ranked winners competing in a final round in Kampong Chhnang. These are frequently very remote villages so reasons to gather and interact with the broader community are rare.
Ok that's probably enough of an infodump :) Hopefully gives some context on who and what you were encountering.

People get mixed up about champa. Before champa was an established name it was already an established society before the name champa. It was called prey nokor or in chinese text Lin yi. Muslims aristocrats made their way into the court and the kingdom became a Muslim empire. I'd say it was during the last days of the funan era forming into the khmer empire we know of history. Some khmer people are the progenitor of prey nokor or Champa. Western scholars get it mixed up between the two names. The khmers tried to liberate the people living under the cham rule because they are the ethnic stock of people that are the same of the khmer people. Some fled away from the cham rule as well and you can imagine where they went.

Please get your fact straight. Champa is a kingdom of present day central Vietnam. Kampuchea Krom is an ethnic Khmer not Champ. It was always part of Khmer empire. However, there Champ people currently live in present day South Vietnam as well. Please read my previous comment for explanation. Some Khmer temples in Kampuchea are older than country of Vietnam itself. Liv Yi was a Cambodian queen and the queen’s actual name was Somma. Somma means the moon. Because Chineses does not have alpha bet to pronounce the correct name, the Chinese ambassador to Cambodia named her Liv Yi which also means moon. Don’t quote me on this but I think the date was around fifth century AD.

The Champa civilization was always a confederation of small kingdoms scattered all over northern, central, and parts of southern Vietnam today. They were never an establish society or unified kingdom. They were at wars with each other and sometimes unite under nationalism. The sole reasons why they don't have a country today is because they always fought one another. Neighboring countries like Vietnam and the Khmer empire saw that and took advantage.
