You didn't have to use the main ubuntu version with the GNOME desktop (which won't run on older hardware well), you could have chosen something lighter (like Lubuntu or Xubuntu).

4:19 I swear I love the GNOME 3.x logon animation as it very much reminds me of the Mac OS 10.7 and 10.8 logon animation. 10.8 was, in my opinion, the best Mac OS release in terms of visual style.
7:24 Yeah, it's understandable, as the lowercase "e" in the model number indicates it's an education market model, and the x100e series would be something students would get or share, basically. There's even the ThinkPad "Mini 10" that's basically an X100e with a smaller display manufacturered specifically for the NSW (Australia) education department.
    8:34 That's a GNOME feature since 3.24 or 3.26, if I'm not mistaken

favorite DE is Openbox as standalone, no panel, no titlebars, only thin 1-2px borders around windows, keyboard shortcuts for moving and snapping around, closing and maximizing, and alt-leftdrag for moving windows around and alt-rightdrag for resizing them. Been using that setup for over a year and love it.

I feel obligated to point out that you don't need a drive to be mounted to flash it with etcher (and by extension don't have to erase the drive first).
As long as the drive shows up instead of "select drive" it will flash. Regardless of what partitions/filesystems are on it, they're just going to be overwritten when you flash the image anyway.

Only problem is Mojave won't run in that config (for me, at least) becaue APFS format won't boot. So I'm now legacy'd on High Sierra.

AMD A4 graphics won't run Gnome too well, as it's a bit heavy. I have an R9 270x and a *few* animations are still slow. I love Gnome, but it's not optimised graphics-wise, sadly. That aside, installing MATE (and running with "accelerated" settings but not compiz) would do an A4 wonders :)
Edit: Also, for what it's worth, I'm hoping to use an AMD APU (either A10-series or Ryzen w/ integrated graphics) for a Home Theatre PC in the future, so yeah :)

I had a 2008 Thinkpad W500 running 18.04 64-bit with no problems. Off of... USB 2.0. Live boot AND an actual install on the USB.
It had a Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz (T9400??), 4 GB DDR2 RAM and a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 512 MB dedicated graphics. And it was 64-bit.
Windows was problematic on it actually, like bluescreens, DVD drive not working right, bad boot times and performance. Though it did have bad overheating issues and was running 7 instead of what it came with, Vista. Still shouldn’t be that problematic.
Ubuntu had good performance, my DVD drive worked again, and it played 1440p on RUclips just fine (Though I think the screen was 720p or 1080p, unsure of which of the two), and video edited 720p and 1080p just fine, and 4K, ableit very choppy. though I did lose sleep mode but no big deal, probably the hardware not supporting ACPI that was needed.
This is me assuming 18.04 isnt too different from 18.10, but sadly I do not have that laptop to test 18.10 anymore.
So no idea why it didn’t work on the newer Lenovo you used well.

Ubuntu got really worse. Before people complained how unity was heavy, and that i got even havier, but you actually could use it even on atom netbook, kinda slow but usable. Now with gnome, even the newer second and third gen core i3 and i5's, it suffers REALLY badly.
Gnome usually is really a resource hog, but that canonical gnome is even worse.
Better off getting a lighter version such as xubuntu, ubuntu mate, even kubuntu is lighter.

Antergos is basically Arch with an installer (and some minor configuration tweaks here and there).
Manjaro is more of its own thing that's based on Arch.
But is there a point of testing Arch if you skip the installation process? Desktop Environments are (mostly) the same for most of Linux distros and all the underlaying elements that do differ are hard to review without going deep or spending much time on them. Fedora has a pretty unorthodox installer too. Haiku OS (finally in Beta now) review would be fun if it boots and runs on real hardware.
