When I googled turtle tank, all I got was aquariums for turtles. Now I want a turtle.
now I want one 🐢
Do you want turtles? Because this is how you get turtles.
Treat yourself. You deserve a turtle.
😅
😆
Which is slower? Turtle tank or US Congress?
Half of US Congress is very quick at make its boss's bidding.
🤣
Germany's Bundestag and France's Parlement français.
Ur mums brain
Funding Biden’s war and NATO expansion with deficit spending and higher inflation is mad. I do not support endless wars. One of these will go nuclear
So basically it's back to WW1 usage of tanks, as a way to approach enemy trenches without losing all your infantry.
In a nutshell, yes.
@@george6252Turtle shell.🤣
@@brentsmock1044 Play on words, you get a cookie. 🙂
That was always the purpose of tanks, to create space and protect infantry... on rare occasions they could be used as artillery
@mithicash1444 to be fair, that was the initial use for them, but starting with blitzkrieg the tanks were instead used as a armoured fist to smash through lines and make a gap for the following units to funnel in, get behind the opponent and finally encircle them.
It's interesting how we've come full circle. Battlefield Darwinism... adapt or literally die.
I think people could be misreading what the turtletank is actually achieving. The armor is not there for the tank so much as for the electronics that are attached to the roof of the tank. The armor protects the electronics from some artillery and drones dropping explosives from altitude, and the electronics provide an interference bubble that will disable drones that fly too close. Also, the armor will help somewhat against some shaped charge munitions. The tank's powerplant supports the ewar electricity needs, and the jamming bubble helps protect the infantry and vehicles nearby. More dedicated and refined versions will follow, it won't be a temporary development.
From what I have seen they already need an upgrade. Three smoking turtle tanks in one attack with their electronic countermeasure bubble on top. However I did see another that was driving around beyond the front and it was not being attacked.
@@seandelaney1700 yeah they aren't invincible and this is a large scale war. Of cause with the wider adoption of these tanks you are gonna get more and more videos of them being destroyed because there are more and more of them and although they are harder to destroy they can still be destroyed. But it's better to minimise the biggest threat for Russian tanks at the moment then to not. If Ukraine have to use more drones to successfully disable a tank then they use to and the odds of successfuly disabling a tank with drones is deminished then the adoption of turtle shells is a successful tactic. At the moment we are seeing crudely welded field adaptations, in the future you could get factory built refined turtle Shields which will yeild a higher success rate at further neutralising the threat of drones. So far it's safe to say the turtle tank is a success because we see a wider and wider adoption of it despite its haphazard and crude looking construction.
I believe turtle tanks are a temporary phenomenon. The better its protection against FPVs, the less mobiles it is and more vulnerable to artillery fire and likes. A turtle tank with a track busted by arty is a guaranteed kill.
Thiccy can withstand slimmy... Eff artillery.. They are slim.. We thicc
Maybe.
Mines and aerial drones are freezing advances. You have to have a way to punch through.
No western vehicle is up to that task.
Rather than a manned tank, remote bulldozers with an insane amount of armor should be given
In addition there is an obvious path to taking them out by the Ukrainians, just increase the size of the ordinance used by your drones. That outer "turtle" shell is far less thick than the tanks proper armor, and therefore it won't take much to penetrate it. It does not appear that they are using reactive armor on them either. And if they had any active defenses on the tanks that shell should render them useless or worse. So the Ukrainians are likely capable of making the turtle tanks obsolete on their own.
@@raftguy1376 The key to solving this problem is to achieve drone dominance, not to litter the battlefield with destroyed land drones.
@@raftguy1376 I don't think there is a workable solution to a land drone surviving a close 155/152mm HE blast.
It's interesting to see the evolution of war tactics and fighting vehicles in real time. Reminds me of what Dan Dennett said about shipbuilding evolution: "we built the ships that came back."
Eah, this war is more and more Mad Maxed...
Pretty much every war is. There are always a lot of expedient solutions to unanticipated or unprepared-for problems. WWII was rife with weapons and countermeasures developed on the fly.

History repeats itself. Nations from Europe to the Pacific are rapidly rearming and Ukraine has become the new Spain circa 1936 when it comes to new weapons testing
Russia will be exhausted after this whether they win or not. China is in no shape to invade taiwan
I really hope you're wrong.
Except most weapons are decades old and tested to hell and back.
ATACMS? The US is sending it because the PSrM will replace it. We have tested the ATACMS. It was used in Desert Storm. We don't need to test something that will be pulled out of service.

WWI started with horses
Even if it looks silly, if it works it works. Don't laugh at a strategy until you can defeat it. All that matters is what works in a war.
Peter completely missed the boat in this video.
The situational awareness in that thing is as good as a WWI Mark 1 British tank.
The obvious solution to the turtle tank is the octocopter called Baba-Yaga. These octocopters are already being used to drop AT mines, which are huge. Turtle shell or not, no tank is rolling on after one of those babies.
So basically it's an arms race between how much armor a tank can carry and how large a drone can be mass produced
@@Mcfunface Yes, however, the octocopter is already in mass production, although a bit more expensive, while the tank can only carry so much extra armor before it simply cannot the weight on the suspension.
The 'problem' with any jamming tech is that it must have lots of output power to blanket the drone signals.
Whatever can be done?
Make drones that seek out the strongest radio signal!
Jammers are the 'loudest' radio on the battlefield...anti-radiation drones would be very effective at taking them out.
The drone would be flown and loiter like any other, but on acquiring a target they attack autonomously.
@@pirobot668beta This is quite true. Also, jamming power drops with distance, so a drone which can stand off and fire a rocket can ignore jamming.
the turtle shell concept always have had some well known weaknesses , it makes a tank slow, heavy, and decreases total visibility. these drones are highly maneuverable, and very fast, besides i agree, they do not need to destroy the tank , destroyign the traction system, makes it a sitting duck.
We nickname it the "blyatmobile" or "blyatmobil" I think the name is quite appropriate.
A certain Lithuanian by the name of Boris has claimed that name already me thinks 😆
Americans don’t know what blyat is.
Looks like a shithouse
As much as i love the name this modification has some usefulness... i think blyatmobil would be way more appropiatefor the standard issue trucks some geniusses covered with explosive reactive armor... think about it you have a perfectly functional truck and you cover it with "make me explode buttons"
many things are called blyatmobile
You forgot that turtle tank has multiple radio jammers that covers whole group of vehicles against drones.
Ukrainians had good number of Sugna P laser guided ATGMs, didn see much footage lately...
so they don't have drone support or drone scouting near the tank? that jummer does alot of blue on blue damage
The vehicle mounted jammers have been able to be defeated, those shells though seem to be getting better and better.
Javelin still don't care
Yeah that's kind of their entire purpose, it doesn't stop mavics or recon drones recording them from a distance but it will stop fpvs. That being said Ukraine is now beginning to use fpvs with target locking which has already been used to hit a turtle tank because they are basically immune to EW jamming. Also nothing can stop a regular artillery or mortars and this is what Ukraine is incredibly good at.
Interesting that in WW1 they needed a way to cross the no-man’s land against machine guns so they put armor on tractors, called them tanks and followed them with infantry. Now they need a way to cross no-man’s land against drones so they put armor on tanks and follow them with infantry. So these are tanks squared I guess.
They were called tanks for disinformation purposes. Spies are every where!
its just not armor, this tank is filled with loads of anti EW, which pretty much breaks drone control. This is the head of the column with anti EW beacon
LOL!
Which is basically the tank saying "Yoo-Hoo! Here I am! Come and kill me!" because of it's electronic emissions.
@@joelcarson9514 yes, thats why its so armored- it protects rest of column, suicide drone attacks on it wont be much of an hassle due to added armored layer and rest of troops are very hard or close to impossible to target with suicide drones. Ukrainians have said that these tanks are a problem, especially with the lack of artillery ammunition.

Turtle turtle turtle
Hobarts funnies were laughed at, but essentially created the science of front line combat engineering
Time will tell, but I disagree on conclusion. The saturation of drones is several orders of magnitude higher than artillery, and this ratio will not change because it reflects the cost and complexity difference. Therefore a version of this protection might become the norm.
Yes but he is a bit wrong it's not artillery really that is needed here it is the javelin and AT4's once Ukraine is stocked with them again these slow turtles will be dead ducks
@@paulzoom489 Those turtles reportedly do not move close enough. Heavy ATGM's like Stugna or TOW will still make short work of those sheds on tracks.
This guy is nothing but pure Shyster, his knowledge on any subject is dismal?
Thank you, sir!
I love all the different kind of nature that you make these videos in.
Actually drones have shape charges and I saw many videos where 1 drone penetrated the tank and caused an instant cook off. Even with t90 tanks... which I was amazed to be honest.
The RPG shaped charge is a game changing weapon. It’s quite amazing how simple it works.
This armor is a standoff plate that is intended to detonate shape charge weapons away from the tank, rendering them useless. It's effectiveness as a solution ends at it being reasonable to defend against drone swarms. Once artillery comes into the picture this is just a massive, slow target for artillery practice, and not useful as an offensive weapon.
The shell including the tarp, looks flammable 🔥
I really like your vids very informative so keep up the good work
Everybody acts like this is something new. During WWII The Russians fielded a beast designated SU 100. It had sloping armor and a large gun. The only thing was that the tracks were exposed and fuel was in 55 gal. drums mounted on the outside. Take this and beef up the bottom and protect the fuel and tracks and you have a " NEW" old weapon.
Who the heck is saying this is new?
It's improvished spaced armor. It defeats shaped charges
No, it doesn't. In fact, shaped charges often are limited by warhead size as they have to fit launchers or be carried by humans, so artificialy increasing the standoff more often INCREASES penetration.
Due to practicality, HEAT rounds are designed with not enough diameters for standoff. By adding standoff, you actually increase the chance to achieve theoretical optimal standoff.
Great picture of the tanks.
Thank you for the information.
leonardo da vinci turtle tank - slightly larger shaped warhead should do it!
Yeah..
Or from the underside.
Leonardo did better: his tank could fire 360°
They are not anti-mines, they are anti-drones... For me seems easy to use drone that carry a mine and just leave it in front of the turtle tank
Tell me you know nothing about AT mines without saying it. Lol
Thanks!
Thank you 🙏
The term I’ve seen is ‘tsar mangal’. Mangal meaning portable charcoal grill
if you add the warhead from an RPG7 you can stop a tank in its tracks by hitting the engine, then once its stopped you can take your time hitting the weakspots or as is happening most of the time according to videos ive seen they drop a single frag grenade into the crew hatches that are usually left open when the crew runs away from the stricken tank.
The Ukrainians have been using the RPG drones for well over a year and have destroyed hundreds of tanks and IFV's. Like on many subjects, Peter does not quite know what he is talking about.

Global warming doing its thing... /s
The rockies stay pretty snowy most of the year
I think this was late April when this was taken. By May the areas in Denver are almost completely snow free and the mountains could get some. We still have all of May to get through. June/July/August is always snow free in Denver, unless some big volcano blows its top, setting up a "year without a summer". In the mountains you might get snow over 14,000 ft, (4267 meters) and it will probably not accumulate.
@@richardthomas5362 I made the mistake one time driving I checked the weather and it looked fine until I got to 3574 above sea level in west virginia it was all snow and a scary drive down the hills.
@@bilic8094 I know what you mean. I took my work truck into the mountains, and about 200 feet in elevation from where I was going the wet roads turned to really slippery snow. My customer was in a subdivision where the roads were really steep. I got to a stretch where it was so bad that if I stood on the break I stood still. If I pushed the gas pedal I would slide backwards. Put on the break then I would stop. It was a really narrow road so turning around was quite difficult. I decided to turn around anyway - if I was going to slide to my doom I figured I wanted to face it head on. I managed to control the slide without wrecking, but that was some of the scariest moments in my life. So, I know what you mean.
The first report of the turtle tanks said that they were doubling as APC's, to protect infantry riding under the shell, at least from small arms fire. These sorts of innovations have little applicability in a war fought between modern, well-equipped militaries. Desperate circumstances often allow for only desperate means, with little efficacy in more general circumstances.
@@ronarnett4811 there's no doubt that sophisticated electronic countermeasures against millions of drones are required, but they are already available to a modern, well-equipped military, and are being further refined now. As was indicated in the video, turtle tanks are only useful against improvised small ordnance, and will again be ineffective now that Ukraine has basic artillery. _Neither side_ in the Ukraine war has a modern, well equipped military.
@@crawkn
@@ronarnett4811 Your assessment of Russia's military doctrine is clearly delusional, since Russia's goals in Ukraine have obviously and embarrassingly failed. Putin failed spectacularly in his initial invasion, against what at the time was third-tier military equipment. There is absolutely nothing resembling NATO tactics going on in Ukraine, NATO doctrine doesn't involve century-old WWI-style trench warfare. It is combined forces, three-dimensional, and kinetic, not one-dimensional with virtually static front-lines. That state exists precisely _because_ neither side is equipped or trained for modern warfare (although Ukraine's training is closer to it than Russia's).

@@crawknbro you realize US Veterans have stated the way the US trains to fight wars wouldn't work in Ukraine or really any war? in fact NATO tactics failed pretty spectacularly (still laughing at German trainers saying "oh a minefield? just drive around it") this isn't Desert Storm where 20+ nations support you and you have 3,000 plus aircraft working unimpeded for weeks on end. This is two large nations with two large militaries going one on one, the US would face heavy casulties in a war all the same
also what's your source on Russia not being trained for a modern war? according to Major General Vadym Skibitsky, Deputy Chief of Ukrainian Military Intelligence "We are not fighting the same Russia as two years ago, we are not repulsing the attacks of conscripts who don't know what they are doing. We are facing a new beast now, under a unified command with a single vision, their soldiers are being trained on things they have learned from the war, they are adapting"
Contrary to the echoe chamber you live in, Russia has mainly been taking in Volunteers over the last year to replace its combat losses, and is currently training and expanding multiple units for the Summer Offensive, even ISW has stated that Russian troops are receiving far more training than they were at the beginning of the war and are seeing longer training times than what the Ukrainians are
It's crazy we're in May and there's still that much snow.
1:09 FPV drones can absolutely take out tanks, it happens regularly
Ukraine lost an abrams and leo 2 to Russian drone.
Drones don't just "damage threads" - a small drone can carry a HEAT charge which doesn't have to hit with high speed to be able to penetrate quite thick armor. And the drone can deliver the charge very precisely, for example targeting the turret base or thinner upper armor. This is why the "additional layer" is used, made from basically any trash orcs can find.

I am reminded of Leonardo da Vinci's original design for a 'tank' back in the 1500's. The same principles.
It’s like the Russians looked at Leonardo da Vinci’s tank design and said “da!”
even before Leonardo, this war concept was actually invented by the ancient Romans, when a group of legionaries joined all together with their shields up, making themselves like a turtle and advancing safely in this way against the enemies (especially against enemy archers)...so Russia is just copying an italian war strategy of 2000 years ago, so this is not really a russian "innovation" 😅😂 but I doubt against the weapons we have today, this strategy will work very well...

fresh snow in may, impressive
Shortfall in their concept; The more armor you put on a Tank, the more fuel and frequency for refills will be needed. You target and go after the refilling vehicles not the tanks, unless you make them into even larger armored tanks which makes them bigger targets either way. Also, one could explode paint bombs delivered by drones onto the tanks covering any visibility ports they have, blinding the tank except by GPS which could be blocked by EMP devices.
New series suggestion : ✋Pete's Utopia🤚
😂 can’t believe you did a video on the Turtle Tank.
The "turtle tank" essentially makes tanks into tank destroyers/assault guns... like a Stug III, Jagpanzer or Elephant.
Sounds a lot like the WWII battle of Kursk, where Germany used the Elephant tank destroyer to penetrate the Russian lines and shut down the artillery. They failed due to being swarmed with infantry. As a result Germany lost that battle.
Keeping armor protected infantry, in IFV's, among the assault guns/tank destroyers, is an innovation to solve the Elephant tank problem.
It's a temporary fix and they know it. It generally leaves the field alone, everyone else is dead.
It "generally" creates 2 or more safe routes demining the fields. In the near future it is likely that also the IFV will be provided with an external protection anti-FPV drones...

Basically landmines and drones immobilized tanks, making them a static target, easy for artillery to take out (remember it takes a few seconds for the artillery shell to reach the targeted area, depending how far away and what kind of system is firing). If the target is moving rapidly and non-stop it makes hitting the target difficult (unless it is guide via a drone or eyes on target system). I mean that was even key to German and Soviet tactics to counter artillery as from WW2; ie don't be a static target. Keep moving.
Really all tanks need to still be viable against drones and mines is to either destroy the drone or mine to protect the vehicle (anti-drone laser systems / mine clearing) or make it vehicle able to withstand attacks from drones and mines, mainly in question the tracks and engine deck. I think Russia is going with the latter at this stage.
Other than that point, thanks for another great analytic video 👍

The more I watch peter Zeihan's videos the more I realize he just spitballs information that is either inaccurate or just plain wrong. Makes me wonder about the validity of topics he covers that I am not well versed in.
While he is correct about the turtle style armor being fabricated on Russian tanks, it is to protect against FPV drones (suicide drones) that have shaped charge munitions secured to them. Shaped charges have an effective standoff distance if you can prevent the them from detonating within that distance their effectiveness is greatly reduced. The tanks are already protected against anti personnel munitions by the nature of them being a TANK! (as long as their hatches are closed)

And they already had a demographic collapse pending before they invaded Ukraine in 2022.
They thought they could walk into Ukraine like they did in 2014 and take Ukraine's population as their own and help solve their demographic problem.
They were sadly very wrong. Instead, they just throw more of their demographic into the flames.
Is it always that snowy in Colorado in may??
wouldnt it be better to attach some offset armor to the tank itself, in a sort of spaced armor arrangement?
Turtle tank, pig pen, mad max. Call it what you want it seems at least the orcs have a sense of humor.

Is there a particular tank they're using for these? I'm guessing T-55's
The Blyatmobile! Batman is envious.
It's May Peter! Where are you!
Do we have any ideas on how many people have been lost on each side . I haven't seen numbers in a long time
Look up the UK's Ministry of Defence assessments of the war in Ukraine. Russians will say that it's propaganda, but it's probably the most realistic and accurate assessment of casualties. The numbers on both sides are horrifyingly large.
All the best.
Who knew all that trench warfare for the First World War would come back like this.
T-72: "Am I not Turtley enough for you in my Turtle shell?"
