- This is how I removed and cleaned the EGR and intake pipe on my 2003 1.5 Clio dCi 65. If you have a different engine to the 65, the things you see in this video may be different to what you see. If you have a petrol engine, things in the video will definitely be different. Prepare yourself for this outcome.
The EGR valve is full of some lovely carcinogenic soot: wear appropriate gloves if you fancy cleaning yours...
A little tip from when I done mine. I put my egr valve in oven cleaner for one hour and then cleaned it of with soapy water. It come up like brand new with very little effort
Hi Komrade with the unfortunate hunting accident, and thanks for this video. My wife's car is misbehaving and my £20 from Amazon diag tool says EGR valve - so this just dropped nicely into my lap. Know what I'm doing tomorrow now. Thanks again and take care with loaded weapons, Dave.
Hey David, thanks for the comment and look out for oil in the egr which may signify a failing turbo oil seal.
I love Brits! Always keeping the good mood in shape.
I don't know how you managed to get that off without even breaking the plastic part. I've had to buy a new housing and EGR valve because mine just wont come out.
thumbs up for the potential cat fight ^^
thanks for the video anyway :)
thanks, mine has simular mileage ,,, i will be doing this. brilliant video.
7:10 you don't want that on ye toast 😂😂😂👍
great video, i think i need to clean my egr so ill follow this again soon👍
Nice job. Thanks.
Thx Buddy this was the best Guide online how to clean That fucking egr valve....
I had same problem turned out not to be egr but a faulty boost control solenoid located at the back by the coolant bottle with 2 pipes and an electrical connector just for reference...
Thanks for the tip, Richard. With the problem seemingly related to boost pressure, I'll check that solenoid.
@@KomradeShotabollokov if you can get your hands on a small piece of copper pipe like they use for brake lines... only needs to be about 2 - 3 inches long hammer a small pin hole in the centre of the pipe with a tiny nail only slightly pierce the pipe ok this allows the pressure to release slowly then fit the pipe between the 2 pipes on the boost control solenoid and leave the electrical connector connected problem solved hehe.....
@@KomradeShotabollokov do this with the 2 pipes off the solenoid leave the electrical connector connected to the solenoid. Click link for picture

Tnx for video, I solve smoke problem on easy way :)
After i clean it it would be better if i blank it??
You can burn the oil from the pipe.it is much easy.just Use a gaslamp until begans to burn...After just blow air .IT will clean very nice.
Thanks for the tip. The soot is carcinogenic enough though, without adding additional fumes into the mix!
Great video thanx!
Is there oil on top of ur air cleaner
Mooi, kan ik mee verder.🙃
How did you pry it open
Hi i am going to clean my EGR tomorrow weather permitting,my Dci is having problems starting,it has been getting progressively worse so much so that i have to use easystart in the morning ,the rest of the day it starts a little better without easystart, the glowplug light ,engine management light and STOP light appear and do not go off until the engine starts and now and again the glowplug light comes on as i drive the car if i thrash the car a bit the light goes off,i am also going to replace the glowplugs if i can get the bu##ers out ........ i will also remove and clean the tdc sensor on the g/box housing if i can get to it..........i had similar problems with another clio (same model) and ended up selling it,i never did find out what was wrong with it.....i do have a sneaking feeling that it is an electrical problem,so my next port of call will be to clean all connectors and relays etc.... the car has done 172000 miles .........wish me luck....i'll try and come back and let you all know what happens...................... by the way it wouldve been good to hear your engine running before and after ..... ;)
Hi Paul, thanks for the comment. Hearing my engine before and after wouldn't have helped anyone: it sounded the same. I had no running issues but the EML was on under low boost conditions (off under boost). Cleaning the EGR did not solve the problem but the car still ran fine and it would have helped the general running, I'm sure.
Take care with Easystart; identiying the root cause of the starting problem early on will prevent knock-on problems later down the line with prolonged use of Easystart. After experiencing cold start issues with another DI diesel of mine and researching the problem further, I can offer the following advice:
Despite many components seeming like they might be the cause (glow plugs, EGR valve, various sensors etc.) one recurring culprit seems to be more responsible than the others; the injectors. Your DI engine doesn't really need the glow plugs to start unless you live in Scandinavia, they just help. The injection pressure alone should be enough. If I were you, and certainly before spending any significant money, I would perform a leak off test on your injectors. If one (or more) leak back more than they should, you'll have starting problems. The injectors are often overlooked yet are often the cause. All you need is 4 small bottles/cups and 4 lengths of tube connected to each injector return line, then crank the engine for a minute or so. The volume of fuel in each cup/bottle should be the same and should be small. If one is noticeably more than the other three you have found your culprit and this will likely be the cause of your starting problem. Four plastic cups/four 200ml bottles are readily available from a supermarket and 30cm x 4 tubing is all you need (check the ID on the existing return lines before you go to the pet shop to buy it). The whole setup should be less than a tenner and I bet it reveals more interesting information than the other common 'fixes'.
An injector that robs the rail of pressure is a classic cause of poor starting on a DI diesel engine, especially with age and mileage.
If you check Renaultforums (and probably others) you'll see what I mean. Search YT for 'diesel leak off test' and you'll see how easy it is and what to look out for.
Injector number 1 on this car is utterly knackered: ruclips.net/video/Gaqx9ATOg3A/видео.html
All 4 injectors on this car work beautifully: ruclips.net/video/F9pTdgxk20Y/видео.html
Whatever you try, let everyone know how you get on; it might help someone else.
Cheers
Mine does run a bit rough on idle but has no problems apart from the starting,i do hear some go into limp mode which i have never experienced.....the warning lights seem to be preventing the engine from starting???
The warning lights will only advise you of a problem; they won't prevent the engine from starting. Have you had diagnostic software read the car yet (such as CAN Clip)?
cleaned egr and that pipe.......NO change (wasnt that dirty really, will have to try cleaning the tdc sensor which is a bitch to get to :( looks like its gonna go the way of the last one...still....had a few years out of it ;\0
A duff sensor will prevent a car from starting thats what the lights are telling me i assume..... gotta get to that crankshaft position sensor(think thats its proper name) common problem on clios evidently......??? we'll see.....
Thanks for a really useful video, though you didn't report on the outcome of the potential cat fight.
It was an uneventful affair, unfortunately. Thanks for the comment.
@@KomradeShotabollokov Just cleaned out the EGR on my sisters Qashqai this afternoon. It's a newer car that your Renault (2010) so the EGR valve is a bit different but just as easy to access and clean so it really did help.
results before/after cleaning EGR ? car is much powerfull ?
I cleaned the EGR to see if it would stop an engine management light coming on, but unfortunately it did not. I didn't notice any change in performance after cleaning it.
Tbh i think your egr was bit sooty but still fully functional
Hi comrade .. i have megane3 1.5dci in the last year start use diesel more than average . about 7.6L/100km .. and it work about 110.000km .. cleaning egr can solve the problim in your opiniin? ..
Hi Abad, I'm not sure that cleaning the EGR will solve your problem without some more research: is the engine management light on? Any other lights on the dashboard? I would check the error codes before spending time (and maybe money) on this. You can try a cheap ELM327 wifi/bluetooth reader from eBay and the Torque app, or maybe buy Renault CAN Clip for a more in-depth analysis.
@@KomradeShotabollokov hi Komrade and thx for your answer .. i take the car to renault company service and they not tired themself and sayed it because bad diesel .. but i put the best brand of dirsel here in ukraine (WOG) and there is no any message of error in car
It sounds like the Renault garage couldn't be bothered to try to fix it... In the absence of a code reader, you may as well try to clean the EGR and see if it helps you. It is easy and quite quick. Other reasons for a diesel using more fuel might be a blocked air filter, failed intercooler (black exhaust smoke), failed coolant temperature sensor, failed injectors/fuel pump etc. Try the simple and cheap things first!
@@KomradeShotabollokov thx brother for all these informations and i will try to do what your advice .. actually it first time for me buy a diesel car .. usually i use binzen cars so i dont know much informations about it .. thx again u was very helpfull for me and wish for u good luck
@@KomradeShotabollokov and in general i make change of all car filters and oil one time in year in renault garage to be sure from origional spareparts .. also i replace any faield parts in renault garage too .. btw .. there is black smoke from exhaust
Tiene válvula PCV? O es la egr para este auto?
No estoy seguro si el automóvil tiene una válvula PCV o si esa función está controlada por el EGR.
Next time use caustic soda, it does wonders...
it is your cat on the exhaust you can buy some fluid that cleans out the crap
Un goupillon c mieux pour le nettoyage
Ce pourrait être mais j'étais heureux avec la méthode que j'ai utilisée.
just delete that goddam egr haha
Nice job, I never disassembled the valve, I was worrying to brake it. But now, thanks to your video, I will do that.
I'm not cleaning the pipe, it's a waste of time for me. Just throw it to the stove or fire for 5-10 minutes and take it back clean. Obviously the coating of the pipe would not be so shiny after, but it doesn't affect on the work of engine. Don't forget to take off o-rings, I forgot and had to find something similar.
GLOW PLUGS on dashboard also means a bad injectors, on my Clio was bad injectors and high pressure pump.
Great easy to follow video. Question Can you please tell me what symptoms did you get to warrant you needing to clean the EGR Valve?
Hi Jason, the EML was on most of the time except when accelerating a little harder, including being strongly associated with boost conditions. Please note; cleaning the EGR did not solve this issue!
very well good job myfriend thankyou for video and applications
Good video i have a kangoo so might be useful sometime 👍
I can’t take my egr valve off, it literally feels like it’s welded on
They can feel a bit like that. I find the best way is a blunt screwdriver or punch and gently tap at it with a small hammer will move them eventually do not hit it very hard as you can break off the ears I think the vibration breaks down the carbon. Best of luck!!
Hello Komrade, your video is really helpfull. My little 2003 clio2 1.5dci has lost the jumpines it had :) it just doesn't accelerate properly, which happened all of the sudden whilst driving on the highway. I started losing speed and accelerations are terrible. 2 different mechanic have have up on it. You think cleaning this will help ? *Its also smoking black a bit, but that's been going on for the past year*
Hi Flyzoor, cleaning the EGR can't hurt but it may not solve
your problem if two mechanics have investigated and not found the issue (unless
they were shit mechanics). Firstly, do you have the EML on? If so I would read the
DTCs with CAN Clip or DDT2000 and rectify the cause of the codes. Measure the
boost when you accelerate hard using the above software or a cheap eBay Wi-Fi/Bluetooth
ODB2 reader and a phone app. My dCi (65) makes 1.1BAR (2.1BAR absolute) peak and
1.0 BAR (2.0 BAR absolute) steady to 3000+rpm. If your engine makes noticeably
less than this then you’ll need to investigate why boost is being cut.
Excessive black smoke from the exhaust is a fuelling issue: too much diesel for
the mass of air. If your dCi is one of the more powerful versions (80 / 100PS)
then your intercooler or other boost intake pipework may have a leak. If this
is the case then the MAP sensor may register this and cut boost or enable limp
mode, reducing your power.
Top video, step by step and worked for me 😁
That low mileage in the car and its so bloody Clogged.... What have you been feeding to that car....better use the Chimney cleaning tools 😳
Very good video
Nice video
How did you fix the glow plug light in the end my Renault Kangoo 53 plate is doing the exact same thing right now
I have a kangoo. When i remove the keys from the ignition im getting a faint humming noise coming from this valve. If i remove the plug it stops. Any ideas please
Changing the broken ormalfunctioning parts always give better results in Renault cars... New spare parts always better.
Hi i have megane 2 1.5 dci with injection fault problem but it comes on only when i hit the pedal to the floor.. Fuel pump and injectors are fine.. Diagnostic tool says its common rail pressure regulator...Tried new one and problem still here. Can it be air in fuel system ? Or bad ECU/rail pressure sensor comunication? What you think? Car runs perfectly except this message. Thanks for help!!
Hello. I have precisely the same problem. Have you identified the source?
Did you find your bollok yet?
It's gone forever, now I only have two left...
please make one video on INTAKE MANIFOLD dismantle and turbo dismantle
Hi Gagandeep, at this stage I don't have a problem with the turbo so I don't need to take it off but if/when I do, I will make a video. Thanks
Hi, did you get any smoke before the clean and then less after? I have some smoke coming from my dci on 66000 miles but nothing else seems wrong. Could cleaning the valve help with that?
Apologies for the late reply; only just saw this. I had a little smoke on full throttle but nothing out of the ordinary for a Euro 3. No smoke change after cleaing for me but that wasn't my objective. Cleaning the valve may help for you but I'd also check for DTCs and maybe see if you have a boost leak.
Hey.. u know the 2015 renault kangoo 1.5 diesel 81kw 110hp version. Are the egr and these 1.5 diesel engines the same? I swear the egr looks identical
my 1.5dci from 2004 has i different back end with the solenoid, otherwise its the same.
Hello
Have a question? My Renault Kangoo dci 1.5, from time to time takes no gas on the ride. Is that a problem of the EGR?
Would be grateful for an answer from you. Greetings Peter
Hi Peter, it could be a number of things and, unfortunately, guessing costs lots of money. I would check for error codes first using CANclip/DDT2000/Torque and see if you can identify the problem. I wish you luck with it.
@@KomradeShotabollokov Since I have to give you right, thank you very much for your answer
Cleaning EGR valve will reduce smoke?
can a clogged egr make your RPM wiggle? and rarely my motor dies at traffic lights
And this is youre cat.
One of them was mine...
i clean these on every oil change, once a year.
Hi, I have exactly the same issue with the EML coming on under low boost. Did you ever get to the bottom of the problem? Cheers
Hi Alan, I'm afraid I didn't get to the bottom of it. My next step would have been to invest in some better diagnostics software/hardware to see what DTCs may have been present.
@@KomradeShotabollokov OK, no bother. Thanks for replying.
Hola amigo. Que liquido usas para realizar la limpieza?
Hola, usé gasolina con trapos y un viejo cepillo de dientes.
Thanks man! I think I will clean mine also, since I am going to change air filter and glow plugs. All together, it will be nice day! :)
It will be a nice day until one of the glow plugs snap off in the cylinder head. I haven't replaced any of mine but I understand that they can be problematic if they've been there for a while. Apparently it's a good idea to get the engine hot first so that the metal expands and aids removal, or so I've read. Anyway, I wish you luck!
Komrade Shotabollokov diagnostic reports glow plug error, therefor I want to change them and check cables in same time. Also, if the metal will expand - will it close the hole or open? That's the question. :)
The idea might be that the cylinder head experiences greater overall heat than the glow plug body, thus expands more. I haven't tried it but experience tells me that there is good logic to it.
Komrade Shotabollokov - will see in few days. I'll let you know, how it all ends..
So, here I am: glow plugs - check! Air filter - check! Cabin air filter - check! Fuel filter - check! But EGR cleaning - I was too scared and too cold, so maybe next time.. :) About glow plugs - I followed Oscaro guide here on youtube - I liked the way of loosening (spray WD40, leave it, blow it away with compressed air). It goes fine, little high-pitch noise from thread and tool, but no big deal. I cracked one connector from injector, but thankfuly it works eitherway.. Also, my EGR setup is a bit different - I have 1,5dCi on 2007 Kangoo..
Great video mate 👍
Cheers
Millroadx7 est une préparation pour le raffinage du carburant très efficace.
Peut-être, mais je préfère juste le carburant diesel.
@@KomradeShotabollokov or u can use bottol brush to clean inside
Did this fix your problem
It did not stop the EML coming on but I cleaned the EGR on a hunch anyway: there was no guarantee it would affect the EML and I knew that before I started. This is not normally a recommended course of action for identifying and rectifying a fault (with anything) but I was curious as to the state of the EGR and it was a nice day outside. Despite no effect on the status of the EML, the car drives perfectly and I'm glad I cleaned the valve. The true cause of the EML will remain a mystery to be solved at a later date.
Komrade Shotabollokov thanks.
@@KomradeShotabollokov great video btw I'm gonna do the same to mine, but would u need to reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery and by doing that will that turn the EML off?
Cheers Bill
You don't have to reset the ECU (you don't have to disconnect the battery). As a method of clearing the EML, I have never found that disconnecting the battery works but I haven't tried it on every car, I must admit.
How does the engine cover come off are there special places to lever it. It seems like it would be easy to break.
It does just pull upwards (from any point) but I've experienced it being very tough to pull at times. Not sure why, maybe the rubber holding caps harden over time.
OK thanks
I got it off ok. On mine 2008 1.5Dci engine, there are three upward pointing metal spigots, that go into rubber grommets on the underside of the cover. On two of these, the fingers can be placed under the cover and the position of the grommet can be felt. One is above the oil cap and the other is diagonally opposite near the air intake hose, so it is possible to apply direct lift to these two. The third is below the oil cap, it cant be reached directly, but will come away easily once the other two are off.
Ah, I see. I have no experience of the newer model (Clio?) dCi engines. Thanks for the reply, hopefully that'll help someone out in the future.
Yep, mine is Kangoo. Other stuff with this engine can cause confusion.....Gearbox and engine oil drain plugs are close together. An 8mm square socket fits inside drain plug to loosen. Don't drain wrong one like I did. Also gearbox oil top up point is a plastic butterfly screw, passenger side of engine, behind front bumper, hard to see. Happy fixing to anyone who reads this.
Brilliant video finally a clear and concise video for this
I appreciate that comment, thanks.
